Thought I would make a thread to post scores of specifically the other Big East teams, for non conference and conference games not involving X. I think we usually have one.
Tonight:
St. Johns beat Rutgers
Georgetown lost to Loyola Marymount
Butler currently up 2 in second half against Ole Miss

I apologize for my inability to control myself. It’s a good thread I’ll come back to. I wouldn’t have even thought non-X games had you not mentioned it. It’s what I assumed it would be.

Nova's built up some bonus points with 2 national championships in the past 3 yeras, but still, they don't look anything like they have the past few years.
They look very beatable right now.

Three of Nova's starters played more than 40 minutes and a fourth played 36 minutes.
Cole Swider, a player X recruited very hard, only played 7 minutes, and Jahvon Quinerly, a McD's All-American and 5* recruit, didn't even get in the game.

My Billikens winning @ Seton Hall right now. Hope they hold on, too many turnovers. SLU could be a NCAA tourney team again this year. They have a freshman who at one point was considered a top 10 recruit. Think he finished in top 60-75 depending on the site. Had an offer from Kansas. They had a top 35 class a couple years ago and some good transfers.
No a Travis Ford fan but anyone is better than Jim Crews.

Seton Hall beat uk in OT in a great game today. I was watching it while waiting for the Shootout to start and the Pitt/wvu game to end. There were some huge three pointers at the end of regulation and a crazy block and steal by an uk player (don't remember his name). Fun game to watch. Great win for the league.
Providence, on the other hand, chokes against UMess.

Thank God Seton Hall was able to beat UK, or today would have been kind of a mess for the league, what with Xavier getting throttled, Provi's loss to UMess and Georgetown blowing a big least the Carrier Dome. Obviously a very nice win for Marquette just in the books. Would like to see Creighton rally from a nice sized deficit in their in-state rivalry affair.

Yes and no. The original deal called for the Big East tournament tp be played at Madison Square Garden through 2026, but there was a potential opt-out that could kick in for 2022. That opt-out has now been eliminated and the tournament is now completely locked in through 2028. You can call this a 6-year extension as well.

We know what kind of season we’ve had so far. So here’s a quick “what if” with the schedule. After looking over the 11 St John’s wins, where would X be if they played the same teams? Their most notable wins were at Rutgers (worst team in Big 10), in Miami vs G Tech (not the best in ACC), VCU at home (IMO their best win of season), and over Cal at home (worst record in PAC 10). They will play just one away and one neutral in their OOC.
With their (St John’s) schedule, I can see X going 11 - 1 or 10 - 2. This doesn’t mean we’re a team that deserves that record because we’re still not good. Give St John’s credit, they did win them and are 11 - 0. Curious to see which team we’ll see in the big east.

Definitely. However, I said this on Twitter, but I feel like it was garbage ref karma for St. John's after their overtime win against VCU. They clearly fouled the three-point shooter just before the buzzer in a one-point game, but the refs swallowed their whistles. Odds are they would have lost right then or at least had to fight for the win in double overtime. So, now it's all balanced out: opponent screwed over in one game while you get screwed over in another.

Before the season began, I picked St John's to win the league on the basis of their guards. Having watched them a bit, I am less impressed. There seems to be no coherent game strategy...just street ball. That is on Mullen. That said, the talent is there to be a good team. Bottom line for me: crapshoot.

Don't kill me for saying this...but the Big East sorta looks like a really good year in the AAC, the A-10 or old Conference USA this year. I was looking at the recent Bracketology, and they're predicting 6 Big East teams to make the Tournament, which is great. But, and this is where the comparison to those leagues comes in, Marquette is currently the highest predicted seed at #5 (this is before yesterday's game). So, a lot of "pretty good" teams but nothing even in the same neighborhood as great.
Obviously, the worst thing about this is that Xavier currently doesn't stand anywhere close to the Bubble even. Plenty of opportunity to get there starting tonight, but I'm not optimistic.
paulxu

I wonder if Joey Brackets is still using the old RPI numbers.
We look a lot better in those than the NET.
Creighton 17
Nova 20
Seton Hall 22
St Johns 25
Marquette 32
Butler 38
That would (if the season ended that way) pretty much put 6 teams in. No "great" teams for sure with #1 and 2 seeds as in years past.

Wow just saw ending of Marquette/Creighton game. Creighton blew it and got screwed at same time. First they had the ball inbounding under their own basket with 0.8 secs up 3. They threw it down the court and no one touched it. The Hauser gets it and hits a prayer 3 to tie but upon replay it appeared the ball was still on his fingertips but refs counted it. That has to be a tough one for Creighton to swallow.

I thought PC played the better game but right now their hole is maybe bigger than X(man if we had that Seton Hall game back). After watching FSU against Duke (I thought they outplayed Duke but of course no Zion) I now know how tough that game against them was in March (again we would love to have it back)..Except for losing Angola and adding Nichols they were the exact same team! Marquette has snuck out a couple recently (not against us though) but I think Marcus H could wear down.

The Big East standings are currently a fun little mess. I'd say there are 8 legitimate candidates to play on Wednesday in NYC at this point. What a stupid melt down at the end of regulation. Inside the final 1:30 David Duke takes a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left on the shot clock and a 7 point lead (misses, of course), Providence fouls at the other end to give Butler an and-one, final possession for Providence in the last 10 seconds is a 3-pointer with the score tied. Yes, agreed. It's a good thing Providence held on to win. I have no idea why Butler didn't try to foul the last 10 seconds of OT. The odds of doing something spectacular down 6 at that point were slim, but most coaches would've kept the game alive at that point I would think.

Hope St. John's isnt 6 seed and us 3 seed playing at MSG first game. Still would rather play someone else.

Oddly, that doesn't exist anymore outside of Nova and Marquette. Did not see that coming.

As a basketball fan that was awesome to watch Strus go off. Can’t think of anyone having that great of half this year.

Didn't Howard have like 40 against buffalo including 24 straight?

He had 21 straight today against Creighton. At least I think that’s what I heard the announcer say.

Ha. I was going to say except Howard in quotes because I was too lazy to check. After looking, Howard did score 40 in second half against Buffalo. Good catch.

I have to say Creighton is the team I want to avoid the most - feel like they're always tough in MSG and give X trouble generally. Definitely rooting for them to lose this and stay in 7th.

I guess it depends if we are talking standings or rankings/ratings. I was replying to discussion of rankings/rating and not standings n

I don't like Marquette in the NCAA tourney. When they get down or are playing catch up it becomes the Marcus Howard show........and he takes horrible shots and doesn't let the play come to him. That team has a bunch of good shooters and he doesn't try at all to get them involved.

Agreed. Don't think Marquette is a second weekend team at all. It starts at the top with Wojo. I give Nova a better (although not good) chance to get to the S16.

Pretty sure all 8 teams from 3-10 are still mathematically alive to at least tie for third place.

I was just thinking I may want them, but agree they are tough. The options as a 6 seed if we are the 3 seem to be Georgetown, Hall, St. Johns, and Creighton. I think I want to avoid St. Johns and Hall at MSG first day. That leaves Creighton or Georgetown. Georgetown is playing well lately and their freshman are getting better each game it seems.

Or we could win out, and DePaul, Seton Hall, Creighton, Georgetown and St. John's could all tie for 4th at 8-10. No idea what that would do for tiebreakers/seeding.

I’ve been using this (http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/bige/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/2014-15/misc_non_event/MBB_Tiebreakers.pdf). I think it is accurate

Thanks. I'm far too lazy to work out the mini-conference for those five, though, but I'm definitely cheering for that outcome. It would be fitting given the bizarre way the Big East season has gone.

This league is incredible to follow. I don't get into the ACC or SEC or Big 10 or Big 12..I appreciate the skill level but they are too big and diverse for me to care about..there are no real stories there. Hard to say a 50,000 enrollment school like Maryland or Iowa State is an underdog. When I see Max Struss have 43 on senior night..or Creighton get revenge for the Marquette giveaway in January on senior night...it make it interesting for a 63 year old long time player/coach/fan like me. I need a story. I hope the best story is Xavier overcoming it's slow start to make the NCAA and be in sweet 16

Though I get the point you're making, I wouldn't say that being an underdog and enrollment should go hand in hand, I don't think they correlate much, the Big East basically is basketball based, it's their teams bread and butter, so that makes it more special. While every other conference also has football, I do like some of the story lines around, I think Jack White finally hitting a 3 after being 0-29 and watching Cameron Indoor explode for him was cool, I enjoy Texas Tech's rise as a good basketball school under Chris Beard, etc. However it is more fun following the Big East for me because it's schools with a similar footprint as Xavier, and it's a very fun, competitive league.

DePaul has a chance to win the CBI at home tomorrow night against South Florida. Max Strus went for 32 in the win yesterday in game 2 of the best of three finals.
Last-place DePaul has a shot to be the most successful Big East team in the postseason this year.

I can't believe you're implying that winning the CBI is more successful than winning a game in either the NCAA or NIT.

I can't believe you can't read sarcasm fonts.
FWIW, Paul Reed also had 28 points and 16 rebounds for DePaul last night. He's still got 2 years remaining for them.

DePaul also has cartare gordon becoming eligible spring semester next year. Transferred in from slu and was a top 75 recruit...lots of rumors that the guy has an attitude problem, but if DePaul can get him under control, he could be a great player for them.

I'm a bit conflicted here. Villanova got flat out shamed by Purdue in the NCAA Tournament, so I can't really attribute anything positive to their NCAA experience despite the win. And the NIT is almost as fucking stupid as the CBI, and at least DePaul might win their stupid tournament. It's a tough call.

His junior year he was a top 15 recruit. Not sure what dropped him so much, maybe just committing to SLU, ha.
Friends I have who follow SLU more closely than I said it was not a surprise he transferred. Definitely off court issues. Had some issues in high school as well. Was sad to see a talent like him leave SLU though.
Do most players who have to wait until spring semester to play actually play that year? Or do they wait until the following year? By playing you waste 2 months but he would be a big boost to them in the spring semester. Especially since he can practice. Also just knowing what I know about him, I doubt he stays in college for all 4 years anyway so he probably doesnt care to lose a semester.
