Got to thinking about our transfer guys as a group and how unique they are in the Staak to Steele era. Safe to say they are 3 of our top 7 and I can't recall that ever being the case. Typically one could view that as a negative but not here. The fact that they are all grad transfers is unusual but even more so are their resumes. No reason to think they won't continue to produce big numbers. BTW, did Welage just set the X transfer record for points in an opener? Maybe Drew or JCraw did better but I can't find their totals.

How did that great-shooting stalk of corn from Indiana end up at San Jose State?

Physically out of High School his D1 offers had to be very limited. Curiosity got the best of me and I dug a little deeper into some X history using my google machine. Welage soundly out scored transfers Crawford, Lavender, Stainbrook in their 1st games. Now I am wondering if he scored the most for ALL XU players in their debut? In the Staak to Steele era I mean. Larkin?

Larkin did not even start until about 7 or 8 games into his first year; he had notable points coming off the bench a few times; if anything possibly Kimbrough as transfer.

I do remember Byron was a sensation from the jump. Looked up his 1st game, a 61-58 W at Pitt but found no individual numbers. Doubt he got to Welage's 24, however he scored almost 500 pts in 28 games so maybe. I thought of Stan but same with him. His 1st game X scored 60 in a loss. Closest I could confirm is Trevon with 18 in his opener. Best shot....DWest. X scored 91 in his debut and by years end, he was the teams best player. It's an interesting "fun fact" to ponder!

I hope Hankins shoots better from the free throw line than he did in his first game.

Agree 33% was not good last game. However, he was 71% last year from the line with 159 attempts. Think he’ll settle in at the line as he progressed from 61% his freshman to 71% his junior year.

Has anyone ever debuted with 5 blocks?

Could DWest own both?

Possibly. I don’t remember him debuting with more than 24 points or 5 blocks. I would have been at the game.

It was a 96-52 rout over Maryland Eastern Shore. Best I can tell is that West had 10 rebounds but only 9 pts......he did however match Zach with 5 blocks! Don't know if 5 is the record though. So, until proven other wise, Welage's 24 point debut is the most by any X player since Bob Staak.....impressive.

Best game in X uniforms for Welage and Castlin. Hankins was also great today. Seniors stepped up when we needed it and happy they had a chance to go out on a high note. If we were to somehow come up short next week, I'm happy at least that these guys had a chance to experience some really big time moments with the team and some magic at Cintas.

Agree and I have always appreciated their play and especially Welage I thought was overlooked. Remember he had 24 against IUPUI, 17 Auburn and 17 against Depaul I a come from behind victory which looks HUGE now. Now on to the Big East

Spoke with Ryan’s father after the game and he was such a nice guy. Told him congratulations on Ryan’s play and he said he was proud for both Kyle and Zach. Class answer. Also we discussed the possibility of making NCAA and he was a realists by saying we probably need to win the last three.

Side note: he must be on Ryan’s sleep schedule because he didn’t look a day older than 35.

Welage has really taken a big step forward. Great to see him finding his strike again. He now plays better defense and really goes after rebounds. Not a big liability on defense that he once was thought to be. Exciting to witness.

You can always tell who the seniors are on the court at the end of a season. They’re the ones who all of the sudden are flying around, doing all of those extra little things (beyond what they ever had done) that end up helping the team win.

Malcolm agrees!

If it were up to me, I’d have him included in the Xavier Hall of Fame just for his part in motivating his teammates to turn things around and then his special play in the tournament which was so key to that team get to an elite eight (defeating Miller’s Arizona).

Now that was a senior on a mission.

It's probably been mentioned somewhere or at least noticed but Welly started the season off catching, squaring his feet wider than shoulder width, lining it up, then shooting. Now for the last several games he's been catching and shooting. Sometimes he's shooting off one foot in the corner ad sometimes he's even fading back around the key. That tells me he's quit thinking and just playing. The results are there.

The final BEast stats are interesting. Welage ended up 4th in 3P% at .415 while JOEY Hauser was tops at .452. Surprisingly Joey only made 1 more than Ryan 28/27.

I think Coach Steele made a big mistake not getting him more PT/shots.....It cost us at least 1 game I can think of.

I would argue that considering the majority of Welage's 3's are uncontested and off sets, an increased usage may have brought down his 3 point effectiveness. Obviously no way of telling, but it'll interesting to see if they ride his hot hand into the post season. We could use it!

They probably won’t be remembered much but shoutout to these guys. Came in with a short handed roster and ended the season playing tough as nails. Hope their efforts at the end of the season inspire the coming Xavier team(s) to never give up.

I personally won’t, especially Hankins. I just think future success will brush off this season as a fluke and therefore it won’t be as memorable. But I give them so much credit. They have a spot in Xu basketball history

interestingly enough, the grad transfers esp Welage had their best game against St Johns(although Castlin and Hankins one upped it the next game). That was like winning 2 games as if a loss (no Naji) then we are playing DePaul on Wednesday, if we lose that one no Creighton, no OT loss to Villanova (I was there and sad) and it is possible Depaul in NIT and we are in CBI. One game gave us a whole week and another meaningful post season. Thanks to the 3 (One year) Musketeers
