He was late to practice due to finishing up academic work at San Jose but I have read some Mountain West articles that stated he had a good all around game (especially offensively but averaged 5 Reb a game and was not just a 3 pt shooter but if you go out on him he can be a playmaker). He could fill some of the role of Trevon and J.P.(I know that is a lot to ask) but how many Marshall or E Tennessee guys were downplayed in the pre game analysis (like bannersontheparkway) who almost stole the game from us. We did have an outstanding Castin and Hankins article already so would like to see Welage as well. With all hands on deck, we could make some noise.

Everything I've read about Welage has consistently said 1) he's a good three point shooter 2) he's not real athletic 3) he's really skinny and 4) he needs work on defense. I suspect he'll be a taller version of Brad Redford.

Lol. Never thought of it that way but think you’re spot on.

Redford was so short he couldn't even get his shot off most of the time. This guy is going to bring a nice dimension to this team and will be tough to guard.

My guess is that an article hasn't been published yet because they are waiting to see what, if any, impact Welage has on the team.

The other two grad transfers start with a pretty good story: a Columbia grad who is selected as Xavier team captain without ever having played for his coach; a DII Player of the Year who only ever had one school offer him a scholarship. Those lead to some compelling questions and answers.

I'm sure they've written a draft on Wellage already. But it's easy to see what his accomplishment has been. They might be wanting to see if there is growth or change due to the new environment.

I only imagine that he is in the doghouse as others because he struggles on defense and this team is demanded to defend. But seriously he will play to score and be an outside threat.

A 6’9” Brad Redford is a nice weapon to have. From what I’ve read, I just think Welage is somewhat limited doing anything else but shoot threes.

I am aware that I could make a good youtube of me playing basketball with editing but I submit this for your approval. Not Larry Bird but a little more that he is being given credit for against some good teams. I am seeing a little more as far as ball handing and ability to take advantage of mismatches. There are no videos of defense though...

Maybe more of a less well rounded Justin Doellman???

But can he shoot it when there are actual people in the stands? LOL. He doesn’t look exactly quick, does he? But a nice variety of shots and seems to handle the ball decently.

Welage can definitely create off the bounce. The Redford comparison isn't a good indication of his skill. Redford was 8-28 from 2 his senior year. Welage was 131-274 from 2 last year. He averaged 4.4 made twos a game last year. Welage actually only made 6 more threes than Kaiser did last year.

Exactly what a I was thinking. Brad, was usually a step slower than his defender and a few inches shorter. It’s less likely Welage gets blocked. Much more likely he gets the shot off or gets fouled by a shorter player (especially if he is playing the three).

Let it be said, I always feel bad saying anything unflattering about Brad- he is such a nice guy and a class act.

I hope you're correct on this. I'm just gong on what I've read so far. I haven't seen him play yet.

And calling him a tall Brad Redford was not meant as a knock on him or Redford. I just meant that I've read that he is essentially a three point specialist.

The video on him....which admittedly is a highlight video.....shows him with some ability to put the ball on the court and drive for mid range shots and layups. He certainly shows ability to shoot the 3 from looong range, but that doesn’t appear to be the extent of his talents.

He is incredibly Creighton-esque. I like the addition, hope he can handle the physicality and skill at this level. While I have my reservations, I think he is 100% a guy that was worth taking a chance on, and I'm obviously wishing him the very best. He is one of the keys to us having a better year than I expect.

Agree. With emphasis on strong defense, X needs consistent outside threats.

This is a good preview of what we can expect out of Welage. If you are limited on time, start watching at 43:00.

impressive and he can play. If we get that kind of performance then we will do just fine and Nevada is an excellent defensive team of course that beat Cincinnati. 22 and 9(although the 9 were not contested but still shows he can get the ones he needs to get). If we can Hankins v Mich State, Castlin v Villanova and Welage v Nevada we would be unreal. I know it does not work that way except in fantasy sports

At least he puts himself in the position to rebound. No Kaiser-itis. He is a bit frail looking but his bball IQ should negate some of that in our league. Good decision making and a decent handle. If you want to see how he can really shoot, go to YouTube and watch his games vs Wyoming or BG.....guy can fill it!!!

Thanks for sharing Xuperman...

Love the remark at 52:46 “Welage trying to take the charge...he just fell down cause the wind was so hard.”

Welage is going to be brutal on defense but he has a skill (high level shooting) that no one else on the roster has so he is going to get minutes.

Last season against some solid competition (Boise State and San Diego State were Top 65 teams and Fresno State was a Top 80 team)

Saint Mary's: 20 points going 8-13 from 2 point range and 1-2 from 3 point range. ORtg of 134.
Boise State: 22 points going 7-14 from 2 point range and 2-3 from 3 point range. ORtg of 116.
Fresno State: 15 points going 4-5 from 2 point range and 2-7 from 3 point range. ORtg of 108.
Nevada: 22 points going 4-7 from 2 point range and 4-8 from 3 point range. ORtg of 148.
San Diego State: 9 points going 3-8 from 2 point range and 0-2 from 3 point range. ORtg of 77. Not the best game but he went 3-4 from the line and added 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

Brad Redford is the fifth Greta Van Fleetle.
