Umm, Germany?

Lowe played a few too many of the older guys. Boateng was awful. Goretzka and Brandt should start and play 90. They have to go with the more hungry players. Khidera and Ozil should be out with Boateng until he is fit.

Everyone who had Sweden winning Group F and Germany in the basement, raise your hand.

Exactly what I said, really the best teams are Brazil which is normal, Belgium who are in their golden generation, and Croatia.

I am in Berlin for work this week. You could hear the pain of an entire nation when Korea scored that first goal.

Croatia has come out of nowhere. Had to win a playoff game to even make the world cup. Finished second in their qualifying group to Iceland. Could not have seen this performance coming.

They underperformed. Modric, Perisic, Mandzukic, they have the horses. The bench might be a problem when those guys wear down.

Don't forget Rakitic, Croatia have a damn good squad, they definitely underperformed in qualifying and have quietly put together a strong run, they should advance against Denmark. Actually interested in this Argentina/France match up, France has looked like shit in the World Cup as have Argentina but if both of them come to play it could be a wildly entertaining game on Saturday

French central defense is not good but Mbpape is a stud. His ice changed the game.
Second game had its moments.
Wife and I just finished a vacation in the upper peninsula Michigan. My family is half Croatian and half Finlander as that cover most people up there. That vacation brought me back to my roots. There were a lot flags out of those countries.

With Messi and Ronaldo out, we might have just witnessed the end of an era internationally. Messi is 31 and may not be in the next WC; and Ronaldo is 33 and may not be in the next WC either, maybe not even next Euros. Kind of brings on the narrative of the new generation coming in, with the Dybala (no idea why he didn't play more for Argentina, literally floored), Neymar, Mbappe, etc. It's kind of crazy to get caught up in the debate of who's better and not just appreciate that we were watching two of the greatest footy players to grace this planet.

1-1 and pks is hardly domination. Denmark was lucky the ref made a blunder not issuing a red card on the takedown. Still have Brazil and France and Uruguay as huge favorites.

Oh yeah I wasn't saying domination, more so another one bites the dust, and I agree, Modric looked a little frightened taking the PK in ET, but cooled his nerves and buried it in the shootout, the keepers did well, love seeing the younger Schmeichel showcase some of his genetic talent.
Brazil looking even better with Japan handling Belgium right now, Japan have looked crisp this match.

Welp. Guess I was wrong about Japan bossing Belgium, what a comeback, Fellaini with the super sub, and a sublime dummy at the end for the winner... Chadli deserves all the Belgium waffles in the world after that.

England advancing on penalties today and Sweden's dream run continues, next round is:
France/Uruguay on Friday
Brazil/Belgium on Friday
Sweden/England on Saturday
Russia/Croatia on Saturday
Gonna see any of the bottom four in the finals, which I would not have pegged at the beginning of the tournament.

That English goalie Pickford, he looked like he couldn’t stop a beach ball less a PK then pulls off the stop with his hand. It is a crazy cup so far.
I am pulling for Croatia. Half my family is just 100 years removed from living and our name comes from there.

Agreed about Pickford, entire match I was thinking "jeeze there isn't a single English keeper better than this guy??" but he came up when it counted, wonder how different that game would have been with James in the midfield for Colombia considering how much of a game-changer he is, and his ability to score out of nothing. Remember his cracker in the last World Cup?? A thing of beauty.
I'm actually finding myself rooting for Croatia too, a lot of solid pieces, and they're entertaining to watch, I like Modric so much more after leaving Tottenham, truly appreciate his genius in the midfield.

What’s the Over/Under on flops by Neymar today? I’ll say 2 and take the Over.

Glad the ref wasn't taking any of Neymar's crap today and gave him a card for that horrendous dive. France advances, and Belgium up on Brazil by 2 with 30 to go, I hope they pull it out, they've always been considered a dark horse but this is the first year it's coming to fruit.

Definitely not a Neymar supporter and he totally over exaggerated it, but getting a finger in your eye while attempting a header to equalize the match is probably a penalty, no? Also, I loved this ref and I want him on every game for the rest of the World Cup. He's not the hero we deserve, but the hero that we need...

It’s a physical game, sometimes things in slow motion look like fouls and they just aren’t. That finger is not a PK.
