Trevon Duval declared for the NBA draft last week, but the Duke freshman’s decision was made for him back in January. That’s when Coach K completed a recruiting hat trick by signing Zion Williamson to what was already the top recruiting class in the country, which featured the potential top two picks in next year’s draft (R.J. Barrett (https://www.theringer.com/2017/7/12/16077798/rj-barrett-fiba-u19-greatest-canadian-basketball-prospect-fbe374453d92)and Cameron Reddish) as well as the best pure point guard (Tre Jones, the younger brother of former Duke standout Tyus Jones (https://www.theringer.com/nba/2018/2/14/17010594/tyus-jones-duke-jahlil-okafor-justise-winslow-minnesota-timberwolves)) in the class. Neither Duval or Gary Trent Jr., his backcourt partner, were able to build up their draft stock at Duke, but both have decided not to give it a second try. They are essentially being pushed out the door by a program that no longer needs them.

If Gary Trent, Jr. wants to return to Ohio to return to bask in his father's glory, I think Xavier would be a great place for him. Too bad he has to go pro instead!

Xavier beating the Shaq of the MAC at the Gardens during my freshman year remains one of my favorite Xavier memories. Jeff Massey was killing it!

Jeff Massey was a very solid player. Really liked him as a player.

Eh the thing is that because of the "you have to sit out a year" rule, they really can't even transfer if they're being over-recruited. It's kind of hard to think about a solution to this problem, maybe a 3.5 gpa, and some other guidelines to get immediate eligibility, but I think even then it would turn into an absolute nightmare in that regards too. It definitely sucks for people like Duval and Trent Jr. who didn't have incredible years, but these programs have to do what's best for them and to succeed, it's very easy to get recruited over when you're expected to leave.. it's not fair, but it's the nature of the beast.
