A whole lot of Twitter uproar and outrage over nothing.
That was the sum total of a social media discussion Wednesday centered around the Xavier University men's basketball team's use of a plane as its mode of travel to Nashville for the NCAA Tournament this week as opposed to traveling south via bus.
Since Xavier's campus and Nashville are separated by less than 300 miles (278.6 miles by roadway, according to Google Maps (https://www.google.com/search?q=xavier+university+to+nashville&oq=xavier+university+to+nashville&aqs=chrome..69i57.4230j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)), some observers viewed or assumed the team's use of a charter jet to get to the Music City as being within a mileage perimeter in which air travel was be prohibited by NCAA rules.
That's not the case, as several people connected with the Xavier program explained.

I would be salty too if I had to ride in a bus for four+ hours while my neighbor/rival hopped on a plane and was there in 40 mins. That would sUCk.

Maybe if Mickey Mouse would be willing to give up some of the money he extorted from Clifton College during his debauched weekend in Las Vegas sleeping with UNLV, The BoreCats could afford to fly.

It funny how many things people believe as Rules really aren’t.

So, the message I get is these are just guidelines. And since we are within 300 miles the NCAA guidelines say bus and I’d take that to mean when they reimburse our travel they will only reimburse us the amount a charter bus would have cost. The difference is up to the school to pay.

As was said on one twitter response. If you were willfully violating the rules you don’t send pictures of it to social media.

Maybe the most famous example of a law that is just fiction is what has become to be known as the Oceans 11 law - you know the one that says a Las Vegas casino has to have physical cash on hand to cover every chip and token on its floor. When in reality it’s simply must have access to. Meaning writing you a check or doing a direct deposit qualifies. No need to hold all that cash.
