I was perusing ESPN.com this afternoon, and I thought some of the Xavier NCAA Tournament records (team and individuals) were interesting. I bet none of you knew that Isaiah Philmore once shot 300% from the foul line in an NCAA Tournament game.

Welp. Based upon Sean Millers report and 90% of what else they report anymore, ESPN is the ultimate fake news.

Just saw on the espn ticker that with 27 appearances and no final fours, we have the longest streak in the sport.

Yep. We were second to Gonzaga until they made it last year.

Sorry, but it's BYU. I believe this is our 28th. I hope we don't tie them.
However, we have more -wins- than them.

Playing around with my 1985-2017 data set (Beginning of 64 team era, also shot clock era), most appearances without final four:
Xavier 25
Purdue 24
Temple 23
Most tournament wins without a final four:
Purdue 28
Xavier 27
Temple 24
Most Sweet 16s without a final four:
Purdue and Xavier both 8
NC State and Alabama both 6
Most elite 8s without a final four:
Temple 5
Missouri, Virginia, Xavier 3
And for completeness sake: Most appearances with at least one win and no final fours ("Second Rounds")
Purdue 18
Xavier 16
Temple 14
Again, this is only data from 64-team era, and does not discount "vacated" appearances.

Behind Mich St and Nova (with 15), Xavier has more NCAA wins since 1985 as the underdog seed with 12. i.e. last year as an 11 seed beating 3, 6, 2 seeds we picked up 3 such wins.
Our friends 3.5 miles away who complain about their seeding each year, have only a single such win (2012, they were a 6 and beat a 3). In 33 years, they have only once exceeded their seed expectations.
Exceeding seed expectations ... it's what we do. Now let's exceed being the "4th 1 seed"!

Purdue has been to 2 Final 4s - one was in 1980 with Joe Barry Carroll and another one was in the 60s with Rick Mount on their team.
Without looking it up, I think they may have also won a national title when John Wooden PLAYED for Purdue.

In 1969 it took a whopping -TWO- wins to make the final four. It was a different game and a different time.
I'll give you 1980 though. It was getting closer to the format we have today with 48 teams. Purdue to their credit played in the "Play-in" round, and won 4 games to make the final four.
According to their wiki page, they have no championships.

Per John Wooden's Wikipedia page, Purdue won a "Helms" national title in 1931-32. This predated the NCAA Championship by 7 years, though.

Oh, I see. I misunderstood what "Pre-Tournament" meant. I thought it was an award they gave before the tournament was played. But it was an award (Like a mythical championship in football) they gave out before the existence of the tournament. My mistake!
