On March 8th, 2017, Xavier defeated De Paul in the 7/10 openning round. De Paul has finished in last place 2 years running. In fact, the bottom 3 were identical to last year. (The 8/9 flipped, but it hardly matters since they play each other).

2016 was also the same bottom 3. You have to go back to 2015 (The first year of the 'new' big east) to see a different team in the bottom 3 spots.

Yeah, I'm 100% watching casually in class to ensure we beat whoever's dicks in. I have full faith in us to pull this out, teams that want to do well in March win these types of games. Mack will have the guys ready, and I think they'll be hungry to prove themselves. It's time to March together boys.

Those are good things in our favor, I grant. Particularly the short turnaround and Mullin's involvement.

None of us here are closet St Johns fans but all this Mullin bashing is a crock of sh!t...No one here knows anything other than he seems to be a unconventional in game coach with no coaching experience but there is no debate he knows this game.....big deal, he gets his team focused and ready on game day AND his players play HARD FOR HIM! He has the locker room and what ever he is doing, his guys are buying into it.

There is plenty of debate as to whether he can COACH this game.

There is also plenty of debate as to whether he knows the college game. Even when SJU beat Duke, the announcer was questioning his offense at the end of the game- "He's basically running an NBA offense of a high ball screen and letting his guy go one on one. I'd like to see him run some more off ball screens or move the ball a bit before he runs a ball screen."

And yet, they have two wins better than anything X has right now. Not saying that to hate on X or prop Mullin up as the best coach ever, but the bashing of that team and Mullin by some on here is a little ridiculous. Their overall record has improved each year with Mullin and if their second best player had not gotten hurt, they would have won a few.more games.

If anything I think that makes Mullin look even worse. He has a team with talent to beat some of the top teams in the country yet he went 4-14 in the Big East, tied for worst in the league.

So none of the praise for winning those two games, but all the blame for the losses?

I'm sure it also took quite a bit of adjusting after losing Lovett for the season...take q or jp off this team and I bet x would have had a few more losses as well.

I seem to remember x going on a 6 game losing streak soon after losing Sumner last year

St. John's it is, it'll be nice having some rest opposed to St. John's who have a quick turn around period. Hopefully Ponds doesn't go off for 30-40 like he's capable of. Just have to play some tough defense, and have faith in our boys, excited to begin to the road to San Antonio tomorrow boys!

I think the polite thing to do is have one of our NYC brethren congratulate St John’s on their victory with a couple causes of tequila delivered to their hotel rooms. That should help them get a good nights sleep before an early game tomorrow. Just trying to be a good sport.

In looking at the box scores it is hard to see a trend. Game 1 was routine in first half, then they hit first 11 shots in 2nd half until we came back at end. I remember Kanter making a 3 then getting goaltended to ice it.had 22. Second game Tre 4-16, Macura 3-10 w many turnovers on baseline getting suckered in, Goodin started hitting 3's and kind of a grind it out with St John couple of bad possessions at end. Tomorrow who knows but I think Scruggs and Marshall will be needed to match Ponds and Clark. Cant see Tre and JP going 7-26. I will be there from Conn. I hope to see Tyrique and Kaiser contribute but with Mack it is truly up to them, no guaranteed minutes. We should be able to get them in foul trouble with their short rotation

Apples and oranges when comparing to X who has a coach who has built up quite a bit of cachet. If Mullin had some more previous success then he'd probably get some more leeway for that injury. He now has over three years 1 win, 7 wins, and 4 wins in the Big East. Not a whole lot of credit due his way imo.

Both games against the Johnnies this season were riddled with turnovers. We actually shot pretty well against them at home but had 16 TOs. They play 5 guys with 2 others providing breathers. That's it. Late game. Quick turnaround. Take care of the ball while pounding it inside. Wear them out. Survive. Advance. Easy. Why am I so worried then?

Xuperman
03-08-2018, 09:15 AM
Aren't we due for a blowout? These guys can score but can't see them doing much defensively against us. Owens is too frail in the paint and will be schooled all afternoon.

KabeX
03-08-2018, 09:37 AM
I'd sure like a blowout. I think it'll be close in the first half. We might even be down (I hope not). My fear is they go crazy from 3. I still say pound them inside, wear them out and foul them out. We are deeper and more rested. Oh and also #1 seed. X gonna do what X does (hopefully). Have not seen a line yet. I'm guess 4 - 5 but we'll see.

Three issues about this game that concern me:

1st, the Jonnies are such a wild-card kind of team. Beating Villy and the Pukies in one week shows what they can do when they are on. They may think this is going to be the next goliath they knock down with their little sling shot. I just hope this is not one of their ON days.

2nd, they've got everything to play for. Their only 'chance to dance' is to win out. And that means, first and foremost (for our concern especially) noon today.

3rd - as others have mentioned, playing on their home floor - which makes it more likely they are jacked for the game and come out with big stones in their little sling shot.

What negates all that however is, WE ARE XU....and they are NOT...and our STONES are bigger.

What a bizarre post. You must have forgotten when they had X down 5 halfway through the first half. Them hanging around and then being overwhelmed in the second half is exactly what you’d expect when a worse team played last night. And there’s nothing to apologize for re that. Winning 15 BE games carries with it advantages. This was one of them.

I think Xavier taking care of the ball and only turning over 7 times really made the biggest difference. Four of these turnovers came from Trevon. I'll say it again, if Xavier can take care of the ball like that throughout the postseason, I like our chances against anyone.

What a bizarre post. You must have forgotten when they had X down 5 halfway through thhug? e first half. Them hanging around and then being overwhelmed in the second half is exactly what you’d expect when a worse team played last night. And there’s nothing to apologize for re that. Winning 15 BE games carries with it advantages. This was one of them.

Huh?

I think we're encountering technical difficulties and it's resulting in some misdirected barbs.

What are you even talking about? I’m at the game, I couldn’t see what happened, and I hoped that none of our guys did anything that would get them suspended. What is the problem with that?

You can go with your day. No one will be suspended. Enjoy

Sounded as if someone on FS1 show yesterday may have said Xavier wasn't paying attention to detail, and that might cost us the game.

He was advising them that he does pay attention to detail.

Great win for XU. Happy that Gates is seeing the ball go in early. We'll need him to feel confident these next games. Pleased with the freshmen and Goodin was really working to set plays well. Seemed like our guards were rebounding stronger than our bigs.

Gates is our X factor. If he's scoring 10+, we're going to be very very hard to defeat.

Lmao, that 3 was just sooooo fucking JP ......gets run over under the hoop and calmly gets up and sticks it right up their collective asses.

onions. just onions.

I thought the SAME thing. He gets laid out. No complaint....just gets up and nails the effing three his man's face. STONE COLD!

That was fun, we should do that again at 6:30 tomorrow. It was nice to see us keep our foot on the gas throughout the entire game for once rather than letting up and letting a team back in it. Kaiser hopefully got some confidence from that amazing performance he put up, truly can make us unstoppable if he hits.

I apologize if mentioned in the middle of the thread, but I’m happy Mack took a jab at FS1. Not only for last night, but for the narrative created by Kutcher and Jackson at halftime. They felt St. John’s should be pleased with the score given Ponds shooting percentage. Completely ignored that Bluiett was struggling just as much, and X was winning with a poor 1H shooting performance from Tre.

A few interesting stats from today's game:

With 9:34 left in the first half, SJU made a 3 pointer to go up 22-17. From that point forward, Xavier outscored SJU 71-38.

In the final 30 minutes, Xavier held SJU scoreless for 3+ minutes 4 different times, including the last 3:35 of the game. While each individual stretch isn't that impressive, the fours stretches add up to almost 15 minutes of scoreless streaks in the 30 minute window.

I was proud of the defensive performance as a whole to be honest, held Ponds in check, kept them to only 60 in a gym they're used to, still let a couple open threes happen, but for the most part looked a lot sharper as a whole. It's not like St. John's doesn't have talent, so it's a promising sign if we can be tough in March defensively, but on the other hand they did help us out by missing a few bunnies, and some poor shot selection from time to time.

On the bright side, we will soon see teams who don’t have as much experience when we pull our 1-3-1 out of the bag. Every little trick helps.

I was expecting St Johns to have a home court advantage but the cheers and visuals(X Sweatshirts, Jackets, Hats ) were probably 10-1 over St Johns. St Johns is a commuter school but has an NYC pedigree even thought X is 700 miles today hands down was the crowd favorite. It may be different against Providence but I bet we are at least at that level

Thrilled overall, obviously. But I was a bit disappointed with the lack of scoring on the inside for most of the game (I.e. the infamous 3 headed monster). Mainly because I thought that would be the key to the game. Shows you what I know.

Didn't we like rarely use this though? Not sure how effective Scruggs/Naji/Kanter would be in it given we used it a fraction as much as we have the last two seasons.

I think part of why we rarely used it is BE teams knew it too well. I bet it comes out a bit in the NCAA Dance where’s it takes an adjustment. Naji is the new long and pesky JP at the top going forward, I’d bet.

J.P. Macura was On Deem all around. Moment - get leveled in paint then casually roll out to arc to drill a 3.

Nice to see March Trevon in the second half.

Hope that was the opening act of March Kai$$$er.

Hope O'Mara got the shanks out of his system.

Chris Paul is jealous of the Shruggs fastbreak pass to Q.

Kanter's bank shot was the best shot ever.

I will take 10 more of those Q jams every game.

The place was full of St. John’s fans for the Georgetown game. My guess is many of them had to work or didn’t love the prospects against the #1 seed.

Man is it ever nice to have big strong guards like that. Running 6'3" and 6'4" guys out there who can dunk on a blow-by and rebound is necessary to play in the Big East.

I for one am looking forward to our Paul Scruggs/Quentin Goodin overlords next year (not that I'm looking ahead)
