Appreciate the pre-game info. Sometimes it helps me find a way to watch on TV. This games easy for TV, except I'm in Naples, FL & sometimes FOX gives us a "regional broadcast", usually FSU or Florida. Really like the disgruntled Blue Jay. Hope he looks disgruntled at end of game

I think we need to flag your comment. In a good way, that is. Wave that flag with pride.
I have a very bad feeling my return trip from Nashville to Atlanta is somehow going to coincide with game time tomorrow. I could use the remote UVerse feature to record the game, but just now realize they recently replaced my cable box and I failed to link it to my phone. I know that, because my phone tells me so. Smart ass smart phone is taunting me...

I'm hoping for another big game from Kanter and O'Mara. Creighton is an extremely perimeter oriented team so I think the bigs could really do work. Muskies have to defend the 3 and run through the post.
I went into this 4 game stretch just wanting 2-2. If the Muskies can come home with those 2 wins already in tow that would be incredible.

In some ways Creighton may be the biggest Xavier game ever. With a win we likely are projected as a #1 seed Sunday night with the committee, currently occupying first place in the Big East and the highest poll rankings ever for X in next week's polls. Not to mention two top notch home games next week to move even higher. Shiver!!!

Was supposed to be flying out today to watch this game, but came down with a nasty case of the flu. So, I'll be cheering on the team from home instead. Really bummed as this is going to be awesome tomorrow.
Never in doubt, X will roll.
I will be attending every game, home and away, the rest of the year.

I have been thinking the same thing. Unfortunately, I am not expecting a win tomorrow. @ Butler followed by @ Creighton is a lot to ask. This is a game that in the last few years X doesn't win. How many teams in the country could win @ a bitter rival on the road in OT and follow up with a win @ Creighton, who has some long home winning streak? Not many. However...if X can pull out a win tomorrow, I think they are in unchartered waters in terms of accomplishment at this point of the season and the expectations in March. Tomorrow is huge.

Its not a crazy long home winning streak, they lost their second to last home game of the year last year to Providence. But definitely one of the toughest places to play in the Big East. Always seems like such a great atmosphere.
Going to be tough, would be a great win. I just have a special feeling about this team and their ability to win in tight and tough situations. I think we get it done again tomorrow. Need to pound them down low.

I was actually thinking that Butler was more difficult than Creighton given our big advantage inside and the injury to Krampelj. It will be a tough game as they have among the best home crowds anywhere in the country but I am very optimistic. This team is just very mentally tough.

I think it was during the GTown game that the courtside reporter said that Mack was preaching to the team that if Nova were to slip up, they'd control their own destiny. Now that Nova has, I expect the team to come out fired up tomorrow.

I'm confident in this game. This is a carbon copy of the Butler game. As long as they don't do something like hit over 15 threes then X should win. Creighton has no legit inside game and our advantage down low should carry the day just like it did on Indy.

Thinking exactly like I am. In order to be/stay ranked in Top 5 & ascend to #1 you have to win games like this. Nova at full strength would win this game.
This is truly an in season statement game. Only Virginia seems in our way to a #1 ranking. Doubtful that the BE (or any league) gets two #1 seeds come tourney time. The road to the BE Title is in our players/coaches control. That title would be HUGE & the BE Winner likely to be a #1 seed.

This game will be more difficult given that it will be played at a lot faster tempo than what Butler played. Butler shot well, but they were much more deliberate in terms of running the shot clock down.
By the same token, it would also behoove our bigs to not get in early foul trouble. If Xavier can neutralize guys like Khyri Thomas and Davion Mintz again, I really like their chances to get roadkill.

“Couldn’t care less” is one of those phrases often misused. Do you care more about the Nova game? Sure, I get that. Top team, hold serve at home. Do you have zero interest in who wins the Creighton game? THAT also affects seeding. I care from week #1. (Sorry, pet peeve of mine.)
At least he didn’t say “could care less”, a pet peeve of mine. Saying that clearly shows you do have some degree of care.

I also thought Butler would be the tougher game for us. Still, with how we've played at home, we could lose any one of the next three games. They are gonna be absolute battles. But, I like what we're bringing to those battles, and am very much looking forward to watching them. I much prefer that than slicing through cupcakes in the AAC. This league is a treat.

This game is pretty big from a Big East standings perspective, too. Creighton can get to within a game of us with a win. If we win, we'll stay two games clear of Providence (and three ahead of Creighton). I know everyone has the Big East title in mind, but a loss here and even second place is not guaranteed.

Even when Creighton tied it there was zero concern. How does this team in Omaha have zero inside game. I'm committing the ultimate sin... game was over at tip off. When your big man is more likely to hit the ground rather than a bucket you're not going to beat a team with Kanter and Omara. X is a match up nightmare for Creighton.

Didn’t get to see the first part of the game today. When I finally got to turn it on, Creighton promptly went on that 10-0 run. Considered turning the game off for the good of the group. Glad I don’t have to watch the game cast for the 2nd half.

Just gotta keep pounding it inside, they have no answer for Kanter and O'Mara, and that'll open things up for Blueitt and Macura in return, and if not, we'll ride our bigs. Agreed we are a match-up nightmare right now for Creighton, just need to continue playing some tough defense.

we got that call because the refs now respect us. I was shocked but what a team effort and Mack at end said it best "we have a team and many of these players could be the leading scorer on other teams....no one will be looking at the stat sheet in the locker room". This is a team worth following, rooting for, supporting and nice to see J.P. have a good game(missed coverage aside).

Wow what a gift of a win but a win that should have already been done with the rebound on the Creighton miss up 2 with seconds left.
Much outrage around the nation on that call I am looking at message boards everywhere and people are calling BS on the foul with 0.3 left.
I really need to watch it again it was a call that usually won't get called. Either way I will take it after having my other team Kentucky getting screwed when the Florida guy grabbed him by the head with 2 seconds left and didn't get a foul call.

Creighton really misses Krampel, he looked ridiculously fluid early in the season. Hegner is soft and the other 2 guys looked live Div 2 players. Macura 9 red and I feared he was forgetting to do the little things Nobody played a bad game, Bleuitt and Gates both had a decent number of rebounds and good ball movement, Scruggs was solid and everyone else is on the A game. I find it hard to see a path to beat a full strength Villanova feeding the big men though but I am sure Mack will come up with a good game plan

Can’t be thinking about Nova. We’ve got Seton Hall to worry about first.
The foul called on Tre was ticky tack. Q was fouled, but they called it on the wrong guy. 32 went straight up, but 4 was sliding into Q. If you call the one, you have to call the other. A no call on both would have been fine, too.

I'm a former high school ref....and here's what I've learned. I'm not criticizing referees in games my team is playing in...because I have NO objectivity. I've complained before....but every game I feel like X is getting rooked....and I go to the opponent's message board and all I see are complaints by them that they are getting rooked. Guys on the Creighton message board are complaining about the call....I get it...but there is actually talk about how they ALWAYS get homered at home. Laughable. Creighton is a notorious place for visitors getting homered.
I KNOW I pick out all the bad calls that don't favor X and conclude we got jobbed. I'm done We all see it the way we want to. Tough calls at the end of the game, but there were THREE tough calls in a row. O'Mara...no travel should have been on the line. Bluiett...well it was a touch foul, but not sure how that tap on his non shooting elbow caused him to fall down. Total sell job...and good for him. Our guys do it all the time too. Last call? If the called it on Hegner...I'm confused, but if they called it on Harrelll, well, there was a lot of contact on a shooter and a defender who was moving into his path after the shooter left the ground. If you're keeping score on those three calls it's +3 pts for CU and net zero for X. Lots of time the last call doesn't happen. But lots of time the call on Bluiett doesn't happen either. Plus the call on O'Mara. BUT this is the rabbit hole, a Blue Jay fan can easily say, well what about the moving screen on the possession before that...and then the X fan says, well, yeah, but that ball went off of Thomas's fingertip....I mean it's endless and we have to admit that we don't see the game objectively.

FG % isn’t a concern because of our mismatches and high percentage shots inside. Shooting is really only concerning from 3.
@ Creighton: 3-19
@ St Johns: 8-26
@ Villanova: 3-17
@ Providence: 5-18
That’s 19-80; or 23.75% from 3. Throw in 10-21 @ Butler and 9-24 @ Seton Hall and 7-22 @ Marquette and we are 45-147; or 30.6% on the road from 3 in league play.
Not horrendous, but compare that to 3 point shooting at home in league play:
Vs DePaul 4-22
Vs Butler 8-20
Vs Creighton 11-24
Vs St. Johns 14-26
Vs Marquette 7-16
Vs Georgetown 11-30
That’s 55-138; or 40% from 3 at home in league play. Of course, every team shoots better at home, but IMO it’s a large enough difference to cause concern in a lose and go home format.

I sure hope the Creighton fans aren't taking it well. The whole point of a message board is to vent and have some community with whatever misery/elation you're feeling. Fact is, we got screwed on the O'Mara travel call, and if you call the Tre foul you have to call the block at the end. Either way, this team keeps doing what they need to do to win. I know some Creighton fans are already starting in with the "see you at MSG" talk, but they do not faze me a bit away from their home floor. We let them crawl back into that game and I think we take a neutral court game without question.
Seton is gonna be swinging for the fences Wednesday, and it's a textbook trap game with Nova on the horizon. Hoping the jolt of excitement of coming home after a PHENOMENAL week on the road will have our crowd and our team jacked up.

I have watched basketball since UCLA v Houston in Astrodome so have seen a lot of games. I have never seen a player get as low as Kanter in establishing a base, sealing the post, and dribbling into the middle very low and able to go in either direction. If he doesn't make the next level (he will at least in Europe) he should start a big man low post camp as he is almost phenomenally successful on offense. I really can't believe his percentage given I have seen only 2 dunks

The funny part was the guy falling down on Tre’s elbow touch. I realize that’s what they do but....funny to watch. Flopping?
In the end, it seems we are blessed so far for the most part. Deep, talented, well coached.... and blessed.
Yeah he definitely flopped but I am sure players are coached to do that if they are touched.
Tre has got a couple Reggie Miller like foul calls from three himself with kicking his leg out.

No doubt! But that may have broken new ground! Haha

Creighton fans took a hard pivot from "well, he did touch his arm", to "no matter the contact, you can't make that call in that situation". truly remarkable

You know I rewatched Trevons foul. He definitely hit the guys arm but it was the non shooting arm and it was definitely not blatant. Really surprised either of the fouls was called.
Why would anyone be surprised that refs call any foul? Refs LOVE to call fouls. It is their raison d'etre. It is the only thing that brings joy to their blackened, shriveled souls.
That is why I love how we executed the last possession instead of jacking a wild 3. Refs are dying to call that foul.

A few thoughts...
-the foul on Harrell was a long overdue makeup call for Sumner’s charge vs. Wisconsin. :)
-JP’s stats showed good, but had he not attempted that 25’ 3-pointer and instead looked for a good shot we might not have needed the luck we got...that was just a terrible decision
-Scruggs is going to be great, he gets better every game. There is almost nothing worse as a fan than watching a new point guard develop...it is just painful. Scruggs is now starting to work his way out of that difficult time.
-Getting Tyrique back will be a huge plus...I believe we would have fouled out more of their front line yesterday had he played.
-I wonder when/if Harden will get any playing time. Can’t help but wonder what we have in Elias.

Good point on Harden. This team is VERY deep. I hope its simply that and not that he really isn't progressing at this level. Would hate to lose 3/5 of the recruiting class.

Whether Trevon barely grazed Harrell's arm or not is immaterial. The ref called the foul because Harrell fell backward like he had been shot with a .45.

It's actually not THAT deep. Don't we only have 10 scholarship players? And Harden still only sees walk-on minutes. If he was progressing, you'd at least see him in some spots when we're up 15-20 in the second half, before the final 90 seconds of the game. Not worried about transfer though, because he literally becomes the 6th or 7th man next year by default.
edit: while not deep in numbers, the 9 we play are pretty strong and each brings something unique.

thats what I meant...not many teams actually playing a regular rotation of 9 players.

The fact that we have 9 players playing regular substantial minutes makes us a very deep team. The 10th guy on most teams doesnt get much if any run. I dont think Harden not getting minutes right now says anything about his development.

Yup I agree, I think it just means that everyone else ahead of him is much better at this stage, plus you don't want to tinker too much with a rotation you've established, it could throw a little chemistry off. Harden will be fine in the future, just proud of the way Scruggs and Marshall have developed.

Facebook has a Xavier post of highlights of the Creighton game, focusing on our bigs. Recall, JP's great no-look curl-around pass to Sean for 2.
What you'll notice if you keep watching JP is that he goes to the floor, into the Creighton cheerleaders. He seems to check to make sure they're okay before he gets up.
On the one hand, he stages an opportunity to "meet" the young ladies. On the other hand, he shows the courteous side of JP.

Haven't scrolled through the entire thread, but saw Len Elmore came up in the conversation. How about him saying Xavier should get the ball to half court and call another timeout to set up a play at the end of the game? Xavier had 0 timeouts left.
I was talking to my dad about it -- it's really to the point with a lot of these announcers that they're just background noise. There are SO many instances where they're informed or not looking at the right stuff. I was watching a game the other night on ESPN2 with a couple no name guys and the refs were clearly reviewing an out of bounds call and they kept blabbering about the clock being right and the refs wasting time on reviews, blah blah blah. Then the refs overturned the call and changed the possession - and neither announcer even knew they were looking at that.
Need Gus and Raf for every game plz.

How often have we been up 15-20 in the second half, though? I'm not worried about Harden's minutes. He will either earn playing time next year or he won't. He looks like he need to add some bulk before contributing significantly anyways.

This. Absolutely 0 worries about Harden being in the rotation. Look around the league - there are plenty of heralded freshmen who are out of rotations simply because they're behind older guys. Ashton Langford, Jermaine Samuels, etc.

We need to be nice to the Jays fans, they had a chance to buy up most of the NCAA tickets as part of their season ticket package and scarfed them all up.

I have absolutely NO problem with Creighton fans. Been there. Was treated well and sat next to some at the Big East Tourney last year. Had some damn good discussions. These folks and Greg McDermott are a credit to college basketball and our league.

Right there with you. Seems every game there are announcers who literally have no idea what is happening during reviews or foul call vs out of bounds or something similar. Or dumb comments like the timeout one by Elmore. He said get to half court and call another timeout. 1. X didnt have a timeout. 2. They didnt call the timeout that had just been called. They used their last one after the first of 3 FTs and McDermott called one after all three were made.
Speaking of, bet McDermott wished he hadnt called a timeout after the FTs.

Didn't think about this. You are absolutely correct. McDermott basically gave Xavier another time out and time to plan for Q's last play.

Didn’t Creighton call back to back timeouts at the end ? Or am I thinking of a different sequence?

I’m fairly certain Mack had the play already called after the first FT timeout. Creighton had their bigs in rebounding and needed them back to defend the hoop. Both teams knew what the play was going to be. I thought Creighton did a decent job defending it until it got to the paint.

That’s what I thought too... however the box score says there were two timeouts after the last made free throw. First by creighton, second by X. Then Creighton TO after Q made his FTS

They are usually redshirted if the team values them that way. This is basically a wasted year for Harden.

We needed Harden to get some minutes this year since he'll be playing a pretty major role next year. Also if any of our current guards/wings got hurt he'd be the one seeing increased minutes. Couldn't afford to red shirt him this year with how thin we'll be next season.

He is getting the minutes he is earning. It is tough to play when you two seniors, a sophomore, and two freshmen who are a year older than you all in front of you for minutes.

This is not right, the box score has to be wrong, unless I am losing my mind.
Mack called a TO right after first FT, that was our last.
McDermott then called a timeout after 3rd FT and then again after seeing our configuration after the TO.

Yeah but resetting and getting time to set up after a TO as opposed to having 5 seconds after the made FT to get everything set up was a big advantage imo.

Agreed and Mack has basically said this during his shows. Mack seems pleased with Harden's effort during practice but it's just a numbers game right now.

Yeah we're acting like he didn't play a single minute all game or something like that, it's a small small stretch of time, but he has seen what the game looks like at the division 1 level, he'll continue to practice hard and improve, and hopefully become a contributor next year, not terribly worried if he redshirted or not.
