How good is the Big East that St. John's cant win a conference game in our conference but is undefeated in the ACC lol. Great job Johnnies

In all seriousness I hate that X is in tight games with the bottom of this conference. However, I may need to reconsider my stance. Maybe the Big East is just that much better than the ACC, SEC and so on. Top to bottom this has to be the best conference in America where any win is good. It may be getting to the point where it's the Big 12 and Big East then everyone else.

Enjoy it while it lasts folks. According to several RPI sites the BIGEAST has the best conference RPI! How sweet it is!

The Kansas loss helps but I'd be willing to bet that St John's and Georgetown would have better records in other top conferences. St. John's may be top 5 in the Big 10

Auburn is in the mix.
X has 2 big road games before the NCAA reveals the current top 16 teams on Feb 11th.
Win both X will be the 4th #1 seed (which means out West though)
Win 1 of the 2 and Auburn wins out until then Auburn might get it.
Or maybe they still give it to Kansas or Duke who knows.
Bad timing for 2 tough road games need both to be assured of the #1 seed come Feb 11th.
Last year they did the reveal on the Saturday before all the Sat games this year they are doing it on Sunday after all those Saturday games. Things can change based off that 1 game for sure.

It will be very interesting to see where Cincinnati is seeded come Feb 11th. I feel like they should be a 5 seed right now as of today they have no wins vs for sure at large teams. If they are seeded 4 or even 3 on Feb 11th well then we know all the committee is doing is counting "group 1 and 2 wins" as a number instead of who you are actually beating they have 4 "group 1" wins but none vs sure fire at large teams.

Here's a link to the NCAA sheets (that I think the committee gets when it sits down).
These start to come out in Dec, and I believe come out each Monday.
You can see how they have the quadrants broken out, and the other info they use for comparison as it relates to RPI (not the other rating services they will also be using: KPI, Pomeroy, etc.)
Listed in RPI order as of last Monday.

This League is awesome.
Better yet, yesterday afternoon before the X game, Dana's had the St. John's game on. When they won, the whole bar erupted in a joyful cheer. It is easy to cheer for the other schools in this league when they aren't playing you. (Except maybe Butler)
I NEVER had that feeling about other schools in the A10. It was mostly utter disgust or disdain.

However, rooting for them was a highly frustrating experience, something I would not say for the Big East. The A10 might have a good week or two, but then they would follow it with multiple just stupid losses, and there were multiple programs that just played spoiler to decent teams year in and year out.
It still kills me that the best A10 season in years was the first year X was gone. They couldn't have that season while X was there to complement it with their usual performance?

Here is the A-10 in 2013 and how Xavier did:
#4 Saint Louis (win), #5 VCU (loss), #6 Butler (1-1), #9 Temple (win), #13 La Salle (win)
They were 9-7 in the A-10 that year. The noncon was also littered with losses to Pacific, Tennessee, Vandy, Wake Forest and Wofford that year.
The ironic part of 2014 might have been that Xavier could have also finished 2 games above .500 in the A-10 (like they did in the Big East) and avoided the First Four instead of being shipped to Dayton. Thankfully the Big East/Atlantic 10 campaigns that season are looking more and more like a historical outlier.

If we win both next week we have a better resume than Purdue. I think we should be 3rd 1 seed on Feb 11th.
We would have 4 top 25 RPI wins, and if Butler moved up 1 spot, 6 top 25 wins.
Purdue currently has two top 25 RPI wins. Although if they go 2-0 next week they would pick up two more to get to 4 and that would mean they would pick up a win @Mich State.
So if we both go 2-0 next week the win @ Mich state might put them over us but I think it would be very close.

3 games scare me the rest of the season. Nova, gtown and DePaul. DePaul has been giving us fits the last few games.
EVERY game scares me, but round 1 or 2 (or 3) of the NCAA scares me more than the BE tournament. The season counts more than a single bad 40 minutes in NYC. I love this team! Hope to get to NYC, and eager to see where they land the first weekend of the tourney. If it’s Nashville I’m in, then a round in Atlanta. GO DEEP!

What was insanely inconceivable five minutes ago is not totally 100% insanely inconceivable now - Georgetown wins the Big East Tourney & the Big East still gets 7 bids.
Georgetown is improving every game and is going to take a scalp they are not supposed to soon. I pray it is not when Xavier visits.

This probably deserves it's own thread, but what are the expectations for March? I feel like generally, the expectation is to play to your seed, but when you're a 1 or a 2, it becomes a little more of a crapshoot, usually dependent on matchups and who's hot. I would say a s16 is the barometer for a successful season, an e8 would make them one of the best all-time, and a FF for best in program history.
Xavier
02-07-2018, 09:44 AM
The loss to Wisconsin a couple years ago changed my view on it. Upsets happen, shots might not be falling. As a 2seed, there is a strong change you are playing a top 25 team in second round. While this year has very few sure fire teams (Nova/Virginia/Purdue) there are a ton of talented teams that can make noise.
I’m already nervous about it, but I agree with you. Sweet 16 is successful season. Anything less will be disappointing. Elite 8 and it’s probably best Xavier team ever category

Both games last night on FS1 were fantastic. GTown gave Providence all they could handle and of course the Xavier game.
Fox really has to be pleased with the way their deal is working out. They are getting quality sports product every night in front of *mostly* full houses with lots of excitement. We're all smaller schools, so we may never get the same follower count as the B1G but we're doing great.

I am savoring each game in the Present tense. Too much of a fun season to hop on a time machine to the future. Looking at each game as both a BE Title Match (can't earn that title without consistent wins) & an NCAA Tourney Game (each game can have an impact on seeding). Focusing on Creighton.

Given the past two years, selling a grad transfer to come to Xavier can't be that hard. I would like to think that transferring to Xavier were one of the best decisions Malcom and Kerem ever made. Go out and get a wing that's a sharpshooter, and this team looks like a Top 20ish team for next year if they can stay healthy.

Just saw aticle on yahoosports : Keep Up if you Can, BE setting new standards for scoring. It shows the BE Teams as a league Avg. 78.6 PPG. Next closest is Big 12 at 75.8. This is the Highest Scoring Avg for a major league in many years, possibly ever. The final season of the Old BE the Avg was 63.4. This might make some of you think twice about our lack of Defense. The BE is simply loaded on offense & playing at an extremely fast pace. Providence is LAST in Possessions Per Game in the BE at 70.1. FIRST in Possessions Per Game in the Big 10 is Illinois at 70.3. I believe I read Nova & Butler are 1 & 2 in country at Points Per Possession. The ACC & Big 12 have traditionally had High Pts Per Game for their leagues & done well in the NCAA. Hope this holds true for our BE this year.

I think I've stated this before here; I don't like the concept just two versions of the Big East...Old and New that is conveniently and lazily thrown around. There have actually been 4 versions of the Big East in my opinion. The immediate predecessor to this current version was nothing like version 1.
v1 = Original 9 (Gtown, StJohn, SH, PC, UConn, BC, Syr...Vill in year 2 and Pitt in year 4)
v2 = Try to Solve for Football = add Miami, Rutgers, WVa, VaTech and ND over a few years (now up to 14)
v3 = Realignment 1 = lose Miami, VaTech, BC and welcome the CUSA 5 (16)
v4 = Realignment 2 = lose all football, add XU, Butler, Creighton (10)...which now returns the Big East to its original design, a basketball centric, metropolitan market focused conference. Today's composition is much closer to the original make-up than the iterations in between.
I did like the fact that the ESPN 30 for 30 focused primarily on v1 as the "glory" years.

The DGAF is exactly what most of us were thinking & it has the inappropriate word attached. The part of lyrics I like is, "Baby, Listen to me speaking." That could be Coach Mack talking to the players. How about Darn Good Awesome Fantastic. Seems to me Coach is in tune with the youth he coaches. Taking the 18 to 22 year old mentality & training them to be men. You have to get to their level for them to accept you teaching them how to be men in a supposed to be cultured society.

Wish I was anywhere near this optimistic. We have next to no shooting and will seriously be lacking leadership. Tre has been a steadying force for this offense since the day he stepped on campus and Tre/JP bring so much to the table in leadership. We'll also be perilously thin at the 5. We'll have Jones, but he needs to be a big jump in his conditioning to give us more than 20 minutes a game (not an issue now since Kanter playing so well) and seems like he's constantly battling injury problems. Scruggs, Marshal, Gates, Goodin and Jones is not a bad five. The transfer looks solid, although much more like a stretch 4. The center in next year's class is rumored to be a project, and not contribute right away. Harden can't even crack the game when we're up 20, and plays walk-on minutes only, which is pretty concerning (maybe makes a Farr leap?). And there don't seem to be any ready-to-go players in the class next year. I'd definitely feel better if we hadn't missed out on so many recruiting battles or if Ridder/Jones were here developing for another year. We're going to be inexperienced, we're going to be thin, and this league isn't getting any easier.
But, also, like others have said, we have a looooooong way to go until October. The offseason is forever, so there will be plenty of time to have debates like this then.
Until then, I'm going to enjoy watching one of the finest teams we've put on the floor, and really enjoy watching JP and Tre in person for the last few times.

Some very deserving Big East Player Of The Week candidates. I'm assuming Ponds gets it with 26 @ Nova and 44 today. Martin had a huge week with 64 pts in 2 loses and Brunson scored 28 and 27 pts in a 1-1 week. This league is tough. Best team results of the week go to X though. @ Butler and @ Creighton. The coverage Fox19 gives Xavier and the Big East, in Cincinnati, is outstanding. From noon until 6 it’s wall to wall. Nova-Butler, Xavier-Creighton, Live post game show from Omaha, and then an inside the Big East segment.
Same here in Jacksonville. In SEC country.

The Friars are gonna spin out of control....their last 6 games don't look too good for them.

I would guess it has been a while since Georgetown, St. John’s, and Depaul all won on the same day during conference play.

Of course, ALL of that was on the National big Fox network, so that was the case everywhere.
It's good to see that Fox knows they have a quality product, that they are promoting it, and are even making it a centerpiece.
This is the kind of stuff we all dreamed about..and here we are.

MOR, right after game in Cincy they have the local fox sports guys at the stadium doing an after show. I'm not sure what they showed right after game on Fox everywhere else but that part isnt broadcast everywhere. I think that is what xavierj is getting after with the Fox19 coverage being outstanding.

Fox national also covers the live coverage by the cincinnati fox affiliate that Fox 19 provides? Live Player interviews, press conferences and in studio analysis by Brad Redford?

So Providence beats X at home this year.....loses to DePaul by 17 at home a few days ago and now is up 8 at home vs Nova....................
Makes sense to me...........

I didn't like seeing G'Town beat Butler at Butler. This makes X's win look less spectacular now that they lost at home to G'Town.
Also winning at G'Town will be a lot harder now that X barely won at home (thanks to help of a 4 point play in the final 20 seconds) and now the way G'Town is playing.
Everything is set up for X the 3 hardest teams are at home the 2 lower teams on road.
Nothing comes easy in the Big East though every single game might be tough.

I know almost noone had X being 3-0 So far in this 4 game gauntlet. Big East looking real good to send multiple teams to the second weekend.

I think that this is too low a bar. If X and Nova don’t get to at least a sweet 16, each of us would think that season was not successful. The dance however is pretty fickle and one never knows. One bad play, bad bounce or bad call can end your season. I love the NCAA tournament format but there is a certain amount of luck involved and that’s what makes it so exciting.

I wasn't sure if you were talking about the NCAA Tournament, or the Big East's double-round-robin format. Either way, I agree?
