Here is how the Big East looks after the first 3 weeks (+1 for every road win, -1 for every home loss):

VILLANOVA (+2) - W at DePaul, W at St. John's
SETON HALL (+1) - W at Butler
XAVIER (+1) - W at Marquette
CREIGHTON (+1) - W at Georgetown
PROVIDENCE (0) - W at St. John's, L vs. Marquette
BUTLER (0) - W at Georgetown, L vs. Seton Hall
MARQUETTE (0) - W at Providence, L vs. Xavier
GEORGETOWN (0) - W at DePaul, W at St. John's, L vs. Butler, L vs. Creighton
DEPAUL (-2) - W at St. John's, L vs. Villanova, L vs. Georgetown, L vs. Providence
ST. JOHN"S (-3) - L vs. Providence, L vs. Georgetown, L vs. Villanova

Villanova starts off with the easiest road schedule in the conference: DePaul, SJU, and Georgetown. They should improve to +3 pretty easily. Xavier, meanwhile, starts with Marquette, Providence, Villanova, and Seton Hall in the same time span. A win at Seton Hall would be huge for the standings, because the road gets so much easier after that, while Villanova starts playing all their tough road games.

Both Seton Hall and Xavier have tougher road wins under their belts. Marquette also has a good win at Providence but that was negated when Xavier won up in Milwaukee. Butler and Providence have both cashed in on easier road wins but have also dropped a home game as well.

Standings this week:

VILLANOVA (+3) - W at DePaul, W at St. John's, W at Georgetown
XAVIER (+2) - W at Marquette, W at Seton Hall
CREIGHTON (+1) - W at Georgetown
BUTLER (+1) - W at Georgetown, W at DePaul, L vs. Seton Hall
PROVIDENCE (0) - W at St. John's, L vs. Marquette
SETON HALL (0) - W at Butler, L vs. Xavier
MARQUETTE (0) - W at Providence, L vs. Xavier
GEORGETOWN (-1) - W at DePaul, W at St. John's, L vs. Butler, L vs. Creighton, L vs. Villanova
DEPAUL (-3) - W at St. John's, L vs. Villanova, L vs. Georgetown, L vs. Providence, L vs. Butler
ST. JOHN"S (-3) - L vs. Providence, L vs. Georgetown, L vs. Villanova

Needless to say, yesterday's win was big in that Xavier has clearly put themselves in the #2 hole. Seton Hall fell back to the pack, but both teams will still have the benefit of padding their records with games at Georgetown, St. John's and DePaul still to come in the second half of conference play. Butler moved up with their road win at DePaul.

Nova has yet to play away games @Providence, Seton Hall, X and Creighton. Two losses are possible.

Xavier still has the best pair of road wins so far this conference schedule. Anyone else with at least two road wins needs to include St. John's, Georgetown, or DePaul among their top two. I'm sure that is in part a function of opportunities against top 7 teams, but still, it's good for separation from teams 3 through 7.

Speaking of separation, this week is huge in that regard. X play their remaining two top 7 road games. Each game is big for the tournament resume (undisputed Tier 1 games), and a win against either Butler or Creighton counts double in the +/- standings. If X sweeps this week (*crosses fingers*), they all but guarantee a top two finish in the league for the second time in three years. The only realistic challengers left would be Seton Hall and Providence, who are both two losses back and who both have to play X at home still.

Yeah, a sweep this week would be almost impossibly amazing. I'd be thrilled with one win. Even splitting this week would put us in excellent shape for #2 in the league.

But that sweep, man, we'd be realistically thinking about winning the league (or at least a share) and #1 NCAA Tournament seeds. Serious helium.

I’ll be happy with a 2-2 split over the next 4 games. I’m guessing wins at Butler and Seton Hall at home with losses at Creighton and Villanova here.

Standings this week (4 weeks to go):

VILLANOVA (+4) - W at DePaul, W at St. John's, W at Georgetown, W at Marquette
XAVIER (+3) - W at Marquette, W at Seton Hall, W at St. John's

I am fascinated by how the Big East scheduled Villanova. It front-loaded road games against the bottom 4 teams while back-loading road games against 4 tournament teams. They lost the one road game already at a tournament team Butler.

St. John's @ Villanova 2/7
Butler @ Villanova 2/10
Villanova @ Providence 2/14
Villanova @ Xavier 2/17
DePaul @ Villanova 2/21
Villanova @ Creighton 2/24
Villanova @ Seton Hall 2/28
Georgetown @ Villanova 3/3

4 of their last 6 are on the road against tournament teams. Villanova does not have a bye, while Xavier has one on 2/24. Now Xavier is +4 in the win/loss with the best pair of road wins in the conference.

These next four weeks are going to be incredible.

Suffice it to say the picture is looking very rosy for Xavier this week.

Besides St. John's, the other oddity is DePaul right now. They're 0-6 at home but 3-3 on the road in league play. Their remaining home games are the Johnnies, Marquette and Xavier.

Did you have to bring that up before two of our toughest home games this week?

Seton Hall is a wounded animal right now - this is their last opportunity to really make a major jump up the seed list if they can pull a road win Wednesday night. They CANNOT be overlooked before Nova comes to town this weekend.

They get Villanova at home too, but yes, they are dangerous. Current projections for them are 9-9 after dropping games to Marquette and Georgetown. Ouch.

DEPAUL (-4) - W at St. John's, W at Georgetown, W at Providence, L vs. Villanova, L vs. Georgetown, L vs. Providence, L vs. Butler, L vs. Seton Hall, L vs. Creighton, L vs. St. John's

And this is how the Big East tournament would look if the season ended today - for this exercise, we'll give Villanova the 1 seed since they're tied with Xavier in the loss column and own head-to-head:

FIRST ROUND
Game 1: (8) Georgetown vs. (9) St. John's
Game 2: (7) Marquette vs. (10) DePaul

QUARTERFINAL ROUND
Game 3: (1) Villanova vs. Georgetown/St. John's
Game 4: (4) Creighton vs. (5) Butler
Game 5: (2) Xavier vs. Marquette/DePaul
Game 6: (3) Providence vs. (6) Seton Hall

SEMIFINAL ROUND
Game 7: VU/GU/SJU vs. CU/BU
Game 8: XU/MU/DEP vs. PC/SH

CHAMPIONSHIP
Game 9: Semifinal winners

This is a silver lining in that Xavier doesn't have the live wire Georgetown and St. John's teams on their half of the bracket at the moment. Seton Hall has a tough schedule remaining with roadies at Providence and St. John's along with home games against Nova and Butler. Marquette could still leapfrog Seton Hall and get out of the first round; their remaining games are home vs. St. John's, at DePaul, at Georgetown and home against Creighton.

Right now, St. John's is on the Villanova side of the bracket. I honestly think their mojo dissipated with their time off last week. They ended up losing at Marquette and at home against Seton Hall this week. I don't see them winning any of their last 2 regular-season games.

X-band '01

At this point, Xavier holds the cards for #1. Beat Providence and DePaul and X gets the outright title.

Villanova now has to win at Seton Hall and at home against Georgetown (along with at least 1 Xavier loss) just to win the share of the Big East. There's a 50/50 chance Xavier might be outright champs at the end of Wednesday night.

This isn’t the A10 with a couple of decent teams and a dozen land mines. If you don’t come to the BET ready to play you can easily lose to the 7,8,9 or 10 seed. That is the beauty of this league. Gentlemen, we are in a great place.

No question.

The 1 seed should win without help anyway but a nice benefit to being the 1 seed is playing at noon on Thursday. About 8 hours more rest going into Friday than the 2 seed and you get to play at noon a team that just played the night before.
