I don't think it's up to them unfortunately. If they are both out that's a little bit of a concern.

Should still win going away without them.

More minutes for the young guys to get them ready for crunch time if you want to look for an upside.

This is not good, hopefully it’s not bad and they will be ready for at least a few minutes.

I think it will be all or none for each of them. If either or both are in a concussion protocol there is no decision to be made.

Missing one hurts. Missing both of these guys really sucks. Kanter is probably going to get a lot of minutes to add some shooting.

Missing both of them tomorrow is meaningless. Missing either of them on Friday would be a problem.

If they can't play tomorrow, they might not be in enough practice for coach to think Friday is an option either.

Gates came back into the game late on Saturday. If I had to guess, they are just taking it easy on him for now. I would expect him to play, but maybe they limit his minutes some. JP is a wild card with the eye. Maybe he plays but wears some type of goggles/glasses to protect from further injury? Another important peice of this is having Scruggs back.......

Are you sure? I thought Gates came out with ETSU up 66-63 with about a minute left. Kanter hit the three, ETSU missed and Kanter rebounded. Then Trevon won it. Was Gates in for the foul fest 6 seconds at the end? That would have been the only possible time he re-entered.

Actually, a loss to Northern Iowa won't mean much with the good wins we have. They are a good team. A loss tonight would be worse as our first bad loss.
But we're not going to lose tonight. We'll be fine.
We should win on Friday, but it will be a tough game on the road.

Gates went back in the game for the final 6.3 seconds after Trevon hit his floater for us to take the lead.

They do something similar in the Premier League for Soccer. I wonder if there will be an "alternate's day" for the Nike schools in January or February?

Any word on how JP, Gates and Marshall are doing after last nights game? Will they be good to go Friday night? Marshall looked like he was in a lot of pain during the 2nd half.

It seems that CM does not want to give opponents any help. So he always says something like “the medical people are evaluating the situation, have not given me the status, so I can’t tell you.” A smart way to handle questions he does not want to answer.

Hoping for the best. Preparing for the worst.
Man, X is good when healthy.
From the Chris Mack Show: Coach can't promise, but expects Kaiser and JP to be ready for Friday. All players except Naj practiced today. Naj's issue is his back, just a re-aggravation Tuesday night.

Mack also seemed to not want to discuss the concussion issue. Seems like he's not on the same page as the doctors .I get the concern with concussions in football where there are non stop blows to the head. Doesn't seem like it's on the same level in basketball.

I don’t get that impression at all and I hope you’re wrong. My impression is that Mack leaves medical matters to the medical staff, and that’s how it should be. Concussions are nothing to mess with.

Yeah they're definitely not fun, plus this makes teams have to game plan for a couple different scenarios. Makes prepping that much harder, why give your opponent an advantage when not necessary?
Chris asked Byron to move on from the concussion questions. He does trust his medical team, but also might have his own thoughts about concussion protocols that he preferred not to share. My guess is he may have felt JP and Kaiser could have played against Marshall, but the medical team (properly) erred on the side of caution and protocol.

I think in one respect, Mack really CAN'T talk about it. If he is seen as trying to influence the process by even suggesting players come back sooner than the protocol and the Md.s prescribe, he is opening himself up to a major shit-storm. Especially if something subsequently happens to that player. In this climate, he has to tread very carefully - or, better yet - not comment at all. It's the prudent thing to do.

Well, being in medical school, I feel I'm relatively qualified to talk about the severity of a concussion, obviously it depends on the grade, etc. but it's a lot smarter to be more conservative with a concussion than to possibly risk making it worse. If you've ever had one, they are absolutely miserable, the headache and nausea, not to mention you're in a constant "brain haze" state so you can't even think remotely on par with normal. I think it was a good call to keep em out against Marshall if they were even at 80-90%.

Sounds like game day to me!
...and, what is NORMAL anyway?
As far as the concussion thing goes, I agree the medical issues should drive the thing, bit I think it is the political, legal and/or media climate that is driving it these days that really makes coaches particularly wary.

Haha I don't know if you were being serious about the "brain haze" thing, but it's just weird, you make really easy mental lapses, like forgetting what side of the road to drive on, or taking a while to do anything that requires higher level thinking, you're just not as mentally sharp as you normally are. So think of it as your IQ drops a bit, and you have this constant nagging headache and feel like you're almost floating in your own brain, it's really strange.

No, it’s Second Impact Syndrome. The brain needs to be healed before participation. The coaches are not getting medical clearance.

I understand their is a medical aspect and said that should be the driving force, and coaches should be concerned and let the medical staff take the lead.
My point was, in the present climate, coaches need to be particularly careful in what information they impart or even imply or even be perceived as implying. There are potential legal issues and even media perceptions that might come into play.
I think the coaches should generally stay away from medical issues anyway. Concussion protocol in this climate is even more so potentially hazardous to address and should be driven my medical.

The only reason I participated in this thread is that I know someone who was completely changed personality-wise due to sports-related brain injuries. He is a bit better than he was, but he’ll never get back to his original self. While I agree there’s a smaller risk in basketball than say football or rugby, obviously there’s still a risk or he wouldn’t have gotten a concussion in the first place. I’m not a doctor, but neither is Chris Mack. If there is a “political” climate driving the medical staff decision (which I doubt), then so be it. For far too long, concussions weren’t taken seriously enough.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I hope you are wrong and that he does get back to his old self. I suppose just going through that, even if he "fully recovers" he will forever be changed.
I agree it is a serious issue and should be taken as such. Medical and non-medical communities have learned a lot in the past few years - and continue to gain a better understanding. Caution is a good idea.
I don't think the medical decisions are driven by the present climate, political or not. What I was expressing is that although a coach might comment on a players twisted ankle or even serious knee injury - still leaving confirmation to the medical team, such as, "We'll know better after the surgery" or We'll re-examine the situation in the next few days," when it comes to concussions, they stay away from even appearing to make such comments. I understand that this is appropriate considering the potential seriousness.
I think they are much less likely to even approach commenting on concussion issues than most other injuries. Just my opinion based on casual, non- personal or medical observation.
