It started when mick wouldn't shake JP's hand, told him to stop being a dick, then got offended when JP told him to fuck off. Then the elf wanted to fight him. Had to be restrained. Mick will come off in a positive light in the cincy media and JP will be admonished.

Mack also commented something on Cronin's technical. He said that a ref explained him why Cronin was given the T. It seems Cronin was yelling at Macura or the players. As I understood it, the matter was brewing as a result of Cronin's words during the game. Anyone that attended the game knows something about this?

It looked to me that this started when Cronin broke off from the handshake line with a dismissive hand gesture towards JP - gesture “I’m not shaking your hand”. Ok, JP probably responded ... But then to have YTG turn back and need to get into it.

Players talk every game. Brooks was talking the whole time. There is no way a coach should get into it with a player. You are getting paid over $2m a year. Act like an adult and keep your mouth shut.

95% of basketball players run their mouths. 99% of coaches don't react to the college kid. Mick has to much little man syndrome in him that he lets it bother him. Can you imagine if every coach went after players who talk crap? This would happen all of the time. Grow up or move on.

My seats are behind the visitor bench. Cronin cries, whines and bitches about EVERYTHING from the start of the game until the end. He reminds of the crazy guy who sits behind you who has the mentality that every foul should be called against the other team, your own team should shoot 40 free throws per game, and the other team should shoot none.
I didn't see Macura say one word to Cronin. I suspect that Macura was talking some smack to some UC players, and vice versa, and Cronin, not being able to control himself, was pissed about that, and also pissed about losing by 20 all game, and inserted himself into the situation. And then he couldn't control himself when shaking hands at the end of the game.
I also think that to save his own hide after going after another team's player after the game, he had to make up this story about Macura f-bombing him during the game.
I think that this game is just too much for Cronin. He simply isn't mature enough to handle this intense of a game.

I hope he did talk to Mick. He was able to get in the opposing coaches head. We got two FT's and a reset of the shot clock off of it. It was a blowout game, but usually every possession counts, getting an extra one and free throws is huge.
Having said that, I've not once seen him talk to an opposing coach like Jay Wright. The reality is, JP finds the mentally weakest person on the opposing team and goes at him. Just so happens Mick is that person for UC

Michael Walter "Mick" Cronin (born July 17, 1971[2]) is the current Crybaby head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats basketball team. He also threatens to fight opposing team's players and is well known for his short comings (pun intended).
In 2017, Cronin believed UC would have an outstanding year by combining some strong veterans with a top-10 recruiting class. On December 2nd, 11th ranked UC struggled and lost against a Xavier squad ranked 21st. After the game, Cronin proceeded to pick a fight with 22-year old JP Macura. Cronin explained later that JP had stolen his lucky charms.

I know I am late to the party and this exact situation I am sure has been discussed but I havent read all the posts yet. I have been posting this all over FB and wanted to post here as well because I saw the whole thing play out and it keeps replaying in my head like slow motion.
I watched Mick going through the handshake line after the buzzer, he was shaking all the XU players hands. He then gets towards the end of the line where Scruggs is entering to get in line but facing the crowd point up to someone before fully turning around entering the line to shake hands. Cronin at that point decides he isnt waiting a millisecond and skips Scruggs and the remaining 3-4 other XU players at the end of the line which included JP. When he skips them and is walking towards the tunnel JP says something and Mick furiously turns around and aggressively moves towards and berates JP. He then has to be ESCORTED out like a child by two adults, one being one of the refs.
Then his BS postgame comments because of course he has to deflect and change the narrative from another L against XU to something else, what he is best at. The CBS article about this also references from a source that Mick was speaking profanely towards Macura throughout the game. Seems like this is what he got his T for, Mack seemed to suggest this as well.
YTG is the opposite of class, he is a terrible representation of his school on the sidelines. The ultimate little man tough guy routine. The faces, the whining, the cussing, the berating etc. For that guy to criticize any player or coach on another team is an absolute joke.
F Mick Cronin.

It was also a terrible time to get a T. UC had just blocked the shot and we had 2 seconds on the shot clock. Mick's genius coaching turned a likely turnover into points for X.

I’m waiting for someone in our avoid tough question local media, so it won’t happen, to ask Mick about the CBS Sports report that he was jawing at JP the whole game. If JP started it, Mick, as a head coach, should have ignored JP. Just my opinion, but coaches should never be talking to the other team’s players. The most a coach should do is point it out to the ref so the ref can tell the player to shut up.
If Mick started it, shame on him. You’re an adult who should know better.

You need to look at the last couple of minutes of the first half when JP's shot was blocked with 2 seconds left on the clock. He is down on the floor and not saying anything and Cronin is going crazy and gets tee'd up. I think by then Cronin had already had enough and was blowing steam. The ref closest to the scorer's table is the one who tee'd him up and not the one who was closest to Cronin.

Yep. And even before that, with about 3:00 left in the first half, Tre misses a 3 pointer and JP is standing right next to Cronin. It doesn't look like JP does anything at all but right after Cronin goes to the ref but then gets distracted by us getting the rebound. The beautiful part is JP then hits a 3 seconds later and Cronin starts screaming at the ref and pointing at JP. I watched the first half today and saw absolutely nothing before that point that could have led to any of this.

I just watched the last 8 minutes of the game very closely. I saw no interaction at all b/w YTG and Macura. Someone help me here and point out to me where the trash talking occurred during the game. Of course some of this can happen off camera, but the more I think about this the more I think Cronin is really embellishing this whole thing to take the focus off the real story........X handily beating UC.
I think he had to "embellish" because he needed some excuse for what looked like him trying to fight an opposing player after the game.

If you see his interaction with the ref after the T, it seems as if he says JP said something when the previous time out was called. There was some interaction between JP and a IF player, but nothing major. The camera cut to Cronin yelling at his player but it didn't seem to be about JP. I just chalk it up to being one of the worst sore losers in the history of coaching.

Exactly.
Sad part is even if his explanation was true still doesnt warrant a head coach going after a player on the other team. Mick doesnt understand that apparently. I know a UC fan who swears to me Mick is a stand up guy and will apologize but I wont old my breath. Remember "where I (Mick) come from there's nothing to talk about."

True. And as much as I despise Huggins at least he deserves some respect as purely a bball coach.
If Mick focused as much on winning in the NCAA tourney as he does creating new narratives after each Crosstown Shootout loss he might have more than one one appearance in the second weekend.

I challenge anyone to find me anywhere in the televised replay of the game a situation where JP was mouthing off to Cronin. Especially the point where they T'd Mick up. JP was on the ground under the basket. I watched the last 8 minutes of the game as well, VERY CLOSELY and saw nothing that would have upset Cronin to make him charge at JP. Either JP is a ventriloquist and Cronin has bionic ears or he's simply just making this stuff up. Please someone prove me wrong.

The local fishwrap's alleged Xavier beat-writer really pissed me off today by saying that Stephenson's denial of Mack's claims raised "red flags" for him. He finished his piece by saying he wanted to get to the bottom of the story to see who was telling the truth. Here is the direct quote:
"Red flags fluttered for me when Chris Mack alleged that former Bearcat Lance Stephenson said a racial slur at Mack. Stephenson has since disputed he called Mack the "n-word" in the 2009-10 edition of the Shootout, according to the Indy Star.
I'm sad for everyone involved in this aspect of Saturday's fallout, and about all the relevant aspects of it. I'm hopeful those involved will quickly seek to resolve the years-old matter. Like the big fight of years ago, none of this has any place in the Shootout, or sport anywhere for that matter."

A few things. JP did tell Mick to F Off. Mick was complaining to the refs about Macura talking the entire first half, and eventually Mick said something to JP and JP told him to F off.
As for Mick saying Macura wouldn’t play for him. Mick has had so many opportunities throughout his career to take a stance and has failed every single time. He recruited Lance who was convicted of sexual assault when no other program in the country would take him. A year later, Yancy sucker punched Frease and Mbodj stomped him when he was down and they were suspended 6 games, only one of which was meaningful. And then Ellis was kicked off the team for punching a bouncer until Mick realized he needed him and he was let back on. Mick has proven time and time again he puts winning above morals so that statement is absolutely outrageous.

You see when Mick charged at JP, he was already way too far in and had to "explain" why he did what he did.

It probably would have been better if Mack had just said "in 2009 a UC player cursed at me numerous times during the game. Did I charge after him in the handshake line? No, I did what any good coach would do...I shook his hand."
Would have kept Stephenson out of the conversation and would have slammed Mick for being a bad coach.
That said, Mick's turning back to charge our players, being restrained by a ref and assistant coach, speaks for itself.

Unfortunately, and I know this from experience, far too many of the crosstown Darwin Award winners also support and encourage this kind of behavior from their coach. I'm sure they applaud and even feel a sense of pride in the YTG, and also use the incident as an excuse for the loss. Which, as has been mentioned, is why these sorts of exchanges (or non-exchanges as the case may be) only happen when UC gets their asses handed to them.

Mick Cronin is the poster child for uc athletics. I want to be big, i want to play with the big boys, i get paid like i was one of the big boys, i get an arena like one of the big boys - but i am simply not one of the big boys.
And where is the administration of uc in this? Is an apology not forthcoming? Probably not, even though it would be the right thing to do. To apologize would be to admit you have a problem. They simply want to sweep it under the rug.

The problem is, these incidents never leaves a scratch on "wanna-be-a-big-boy-now" (picturing him in the Frisch's Big Boy overalls). Remember the 'brawl' aftermath where the Teflon imp came out smelling like a rose? I suspect this will be more of the same. We shall see as the narrative plays out.

I think this one actually hangs with Cronin if he ever is to test the coaching waters outside of clifton again. Programs will put this under the spot light - its not a good look, especially with some national guys speaking out against it. Locally - it will get no run - it's the nature of the beast in the local sports coverage. Something we have to live with - even though it grates on our last nerve (or atleast mine).

As a UC fan that occasionally stops by here, my take on it is this:
- Whatever was said/not said is somewhat irrelevant to me because that stuff happens all the time and is being used as a cop out excuse.
- Not shaking someone's hand during a handshake line is ridiculous. Even if you hate the player and think he had a horrible game, just tell him "congrats on the win" or "good luck the rest of the season." (I'm sure as a kid Mick was the "good game, good game, you suck, good game kid")
- I'm sure JP probably said something in the line when Mick didn't shake is hand, and is he in the wrong here? Maybe, but it's very minor in comparison to Mick challenging a college student to a fight. UC just got dry-f*cked, again, and Mick was probably pissed and frustrated to the point that the slightest thing would set him off. It just so happened that JP asking for a beejer was that thing.
Definitely not making any excuses for Mick, he deserves to look like the bad guy out of all of this. To be honest, I think a large portion of UC fans would have bought JP a beer if he had laid out Mick after being challenged to a fight. Doesn't mean we don't like the guy because he's done a lot of good for our program, its just getting to the point where we appear to be accepting "good" instead of striving for "great." Cronin is way too emotionally immature to handle a game like this in my opinion because he gets caught up in the moment of a rivalry game.
Is there any portion of the UC fan base that feels like they are without a sports identity currently? From outside persepective, it seems like after the Kelly years the school started to pour money into Football at the detriment of the hoops program in the hopes of jumping to a Big 5 football conference. When that didn't pan out, they've been stuck in neutral on both fronts.
edit: I also feel like the void contributed to Mick being able to exist for as long as he has as a HC.

This is the most reasonable take I've seen from any UC fan. Look, JP talks trash. He tries to get under people's skin. He targets the weakest person mentally. He's really good at getting under people's skin. Cronin was yapping at JP a lot too. I've got no problem with that. I'm good with players yapping at players, players yapping at coaches, coaches yapping at players. As long as they keep it strictly verbal and don't let it turn physical then there isn't anything wrong with it. When it comes to the handshake line, it really isn't a big deal that Mick blew by JP and a few other guys. I heard someone say that Scruggs or someone else was pointing to someone up in the crowd or something and Mick was just trying to get through as quick as possible. He started skipping Scruggs and everyone else because Scruggs wasn't ready to shake hands and JP just happened to be behind him in the line. JP didn't need to say anything but he did because he knew he could draw a reaction out of Mick. Mick gets made fun of a lot because he is really short but he actually is a mental midget. That's why JP targeted him and said something because he knew there was a good chance he could get a reaction and he did. The reason that Mack brought up Lance Stephenson calling him the n-word was to show that 99% of coaches don't let talk get in their heads. Also to call Mick out for being a giant hypocrite by saying that a vulgar player wouldn't play for him. Mack could've just said a former UC player said some vulgar language to him and he ignored it like most people and there was no incident. I don't really have a huge problem with him bringing up Stephenson. As for Stephenson denying it you can't really blame him and we all know he did say it so it doesn't really matter. Basically Mick got fed up over trash talk which happens in practically every college basketball game and because someone called him some bad words. Big deal. He comes out of this looking like a bigger idiot than he was.

They were really holding out hope that the Big 12 invited them, but then the Big 12 decided not to expand. This next set of re-alignment is going to be make or break for UC.

The next phase of realignment most likely will involve a new business model or at least a materially revised business model when it comes to media content and the value of that to those who own the rights to it and those who want to pay for those rights. We're talking bundled cable packages giving way to streaming.
In essence, heavy subsidies that come from consumers paying for content they don't want or view much are beginning to melt. That model was able to support a major CONFERENCE. A Wake Forest or BC presently benefit from this world. As things begin to slice and dice their way towards measuring content value more directly, it should become interesting to see how the haves and have nots reset.
I know we're a small school and that we don't have football, and I just implied that it may be more about PROGRAM than it is about CONFERENCE down the road - may be, but who knows - but I still like the uniqueness of the Big East as a hoops conference first and given the population centers our schools reside in.
On a related note, but different point, I will never - NEVER - understand why UC pumped $xx millions into Nippert while leaving its capacity at the mid-major water mark. That mistake also was made by St. Joe's when it shot its hoops capital expenditure budget by renovating its place into a glorified high school gym.
If losers typically come out of events like this, then I can't think of bigger losers than UC and UCONN.

One thing I find kind of interesting about this whole thing- Macura got Cronin so pissed at him, that Cronin got a very untimely T as a result. Think about that- a player got into a coach's head and caused the coach to lose his composure and have a meltdown. You don't see that very often, if ever.

I agree with your sentiments whole heartedly, and I believe the Xavier brand will grow even more as we continue to find success before the rights expire for all conferences in 2024, so I don't think our conference will get shaken up too bad especially with the high quality of basketball we put on the court. It's nice that the rest of the conference is purely basketball too, and I think streaming services like Netflix or something could potentially pick up let's sayyy, an ACC Network or something, you know? I just think as we continue to improve, and the rest of the conference does, we'll come out of this just fine.

My last thought on this issue (I hope). Why do these things always seems to happen when XU wins? The fight happened in an XU win. Both handshake issues happened after an XU win. Cronin walked off the court two years ago without shaking hands with anyone other than Mack. Can't UC/Cronin just lose gracefully?
The answer I'm afraid is "No".
This thought crossed my mind over the weekend.

Seriously, the guy just seems pathetic. I always think about the difference between "commanding respect" or "demanding respect."
People who command respect don't always (or even often) do it by trying to be a hard-ass. Often times, that can come along with it, but you can't just be a boor. At the most basic level, people who "command" respect get it because they are "worthy" of it in some way.
Then think about Mick. He seems to be the type of person who demands respect. Look at this clip of him calling Washington over to berate him during a stoppage in play, just two minutes into the game.
https://thumbs.gfycat.com/DefiniteSpiritedAmericanwirehair-size_restricted.gif
Again, he just looks pathetic. First of all, what a blatant piece of hypocritical garbage to be shouting across 94 feet of court "GET THE FUCK DOWN HERE...YOUUUUUU" the first time they show your ugly mug on camera during the game, and then to get behind the mic after the game with your sanctimonious bullshit about how you've NEVER been told to "F off three times" (oh my Lord, I've got the vapors!). Give me a break.
But back to my main point... how can anyone look at Mick's posturing like a wound up toddler in that clip and take him seriously? What a tool. I really do feel sorry for anyone that has to play for him.

Not any elite guys do. His recruiting just like his bench coaching sucks yearly. It was almost comical watching CMack coach rings around that asshat Saturday. That was a low grade CYO coach vs an Elite Eight Guy right there.

Occasionally yelling at a guy may wake him up or give him a kick in the butt, but when your only way to get your message through to your players is to yell and cuss at them, you're probably not a very good coach.

I don’t particularly care what style of motivation Mick uses, his players know what they signed up for and it’s not like you see a bunch transferring out. I do wonder if it hurts recruiting though. Between that, being an Under Armor school, being in the AAC, and being defense focused it’s no wonder he has so much trouble on the recruiting trail.

I've had several discussions with UC folks about Mack. If UC can have a top 15 team in the nation despite Mick's limitations (offense, in-game adjustments, height, etc), then would they be a top 3 team with Mack? Obviously it's not an apples to apples comparison because we coaches recruit players to fit their style, but it's interesting to think about anyway. We are well aware who the superior coach is.

Yeah, you guys have plenty of talent this year. That starting 5 is really solid. I haven't bought into the "This UC team can make a deep NCAA run" hype solely because of Cronin. I see a lot of inferiority in the guy. He's just a sour, sour, angry little guy.
I have to wonder whether or not, sometime after 2:30 PM on Saturday he eventually went back to his office or went home and sat in a room by himself and allowed it sink in on how stupid he was for his behavior at the Cintas Center. Given how the national press has picked up on it, I doubt he's had much of an opportunity to put it behind him yet.

#1) Mick's players are still better athletes than shooters. You need shooters in the NCAA Tourney or bye bye
#2) the ranking of Mick's teams are deceiving because they climb polls due to the fact they have so many wins because they don't play anybody. The committee realizes this at the end of the year by rewarding a 30 win team with a 6 seed. Polls though do not work like that.

I'm SOOOOO done with the narrative that "gangsters" and "body bag" and "zip 'em up" have no room in sports. It is such a racist/ageist/pollyanna reaction to the same type of language that has pervaded sports lexicon for a LONG time and which no one seems to have a problem with. "Dagger"? What are we supposing that dagger is intended to be doing....that's right stabbing someone. "Warrior" "Assassin" "Sharpshooter" "Killing" "Annihilate" There are ton of other terms, but ALL of these terms have one thing in common: they are about hurting/killing your opponent. The terms Tu/Lyons used are NO different, it's just the white/older/urbane seem to have an issue with them because they are new...or black....or whatever. Get over it folks (not necessarily you guys). Sorry of the rant, i work with a ton of Dayton fans who often throw that out there like it is some huge insult or disparaging comment. I'm seeing the same crap from UC fans now. It is stupid. It's OK to be a "Sniper" but not a "gangster"? It's ok to destroy your opponent, "kill" and "annihilate" them, but put 'em in body bags is somehow immoral. They're the same f*%king metaphors!
Anyway...again...sorry for the rant. Just had to get that off my chest somewhere. :)

Obviously it's not an apples to apples comparison because we coaches recruit players to fit their style, but it's interesting to think about anyway. We are well aware who the superior coach is.
A couple things here. First, Mick has never had a top 15 team (or top 20) per Kenpom. Hes had 3 top 30 teams in 11 years, but never cracked the top 20. Second, I dont think Mack is a significantly better regular season coach than Mick. Both have been pretty similar if you compare the numbers. The difference between the two comes from a couple things. First is Mack gets better recruits, which gives his teams higher upside. Its easier to get better as the season goes on when you have better players. It gives you more options for adjustments. Second, is Mack is an offensive coach and Mick is defensive. Defensive teams are consistent and tend to do well in the regular season but struggle in the postseason. Offensive teams can ratchet up their defense in the postseason via greater intensity and game planning. Defensive teams have a harder time becoming good offensively when they need to be.
Mick is a really good coach he just hasnt succeeded at the highest level due to some limitations. Other defensive coached have has simmilar issues. Bennett and Huggins come to mind.

I still think the best comment from Mick was his reference to where he’s from, trying to make it sound like he’s a tough guy from the hood. Dude, you went to LaSalle HS, so you’re from white bread suburbia. As a fellow Lancer alum, I apologize for his association with the school.

Mark Titus rips him apart for this comment. He is a coach from Cincinnati, coaching a team in Cincinnati, doing a post game press conference for an opponent also located in Cincinnati, to a game played in Cincinnati, covered by sports writers largely from Cincinnati....

This has really nothing to do with the game, but what I hate is that X fans don't really embrace it. Or, the "narrative" is that X is the plucky little underdog still. They run out teams full of punks and cons and everyone talks about them like they're the second coming of Ward Cleaver.
The narratives never cease to amaze me from their end....

Mick abjectly SucKS as a coach- especially on the offensive side of the ball. Didn’t you watch that game Saturday? Mickey Mouses whole offense was throw the ball to Gary Clark and when Kaiser shut his ass down, it was back to the “chuck and rebound plus get steals off turnover” offense. XU ruled the boards and handled the press so The Jaundiced Leprechaun had no other answers. His late/postseason record is what it is because he can’t schedule Tournament cupcakes and his teams are easily defended. Mick is a mediocre to poor coach who fattens up on cream puffs and a crap conference.
School was in Session on Saturday with CMack the Professor and Mickey Mouse an F student. Period

Ya, know. Maybe all these BoreCat fans were set off immediately by Tyrique's flex after the first baskets. How quickly they forget KMart's more evident flex in front of the camera in the 1999 Shootout- which SucKS of course also lost when they were Number 1.
They have a lot of short memories over there because they have limited brain power anyway. #Cretins

And I've said it before and I'll say it again after watching this game numerous times. Kaiser Gates defense against Gary Clark set the tone on that game from jump. Mickey Mouse had no answers and neither did Clark.
Kaiser is becoming a star before our eyes, and he's gonna open up some NBA scouts eyes too.
