BJ's line might seem a little high...but X covered a 4.5 line against a Baylor team that had been tested much more so than UC. If it's -5.5 and it stays there, I'm all over X because a 5.5 line will get a lot of UC money. If it starts and stays at 5.5, Vegas is on XU.

UC hasn't played any one (though Wyoming is technically a top 100 team) So advantage has to be with Xavier if this game gets tight late.

I fully expect XU to jump out to a 20-5 lead or something. We always jump on big teams early at Cintas. But they will make a run and bring it close but I fully expect to win by 10+

And 10+ doesn't even make us the far better team, its just we are hard to beat in our gym and UC plays terrible here.


The matchups in this game are really interesting. Neither team can give any single player too much attention because scoring can come from all 5 spots. UC's starting lineup is full of guys who could drop 20 on any given night.

I took an X friend home for Thanksgiving once. He was kind enough to roll the window down in an attempt to blow a torrent of used alcohol out the window (mostly onto the outside of the door, I’m sure), but somehow he magically seemed to get most of it into the crack where the window went down. It was a surgical puke! Like he had a funnel. A car wash wasn’t helping that....the stink just would NOT go away! My wife’s family traded in a car for less than that. I’m not allowed to name a dog Bailey because a little red headed girl puked in their car and they couldn’t get the stench out. Time for a new car! Inside the door stays with you, with no shot at cleaning it up.

Yeah I think it will be similar to the last shootout at Cintas. X jumps out to a double digit lead, uc gets back into it by early 2nd half, then X pulls back away.

Xavier has to play good defense in this game though. I would love to see the kenpom Defensive rank move up 10 spots after this game. It will mean we held them well under a point per possession.

I am really interested to see how fast UC plays on offense. Currently they are using just 15.8 seconds of shot clock which puts them at #58 in the country (Last year they used 18.7 seconds which was ranked #303). So far against not so good teams, they are playing really fast. The 2 teams high major teams that we beat play slow methodical offense (Wisconsin and Baylor) but the team who beat us plays a pace that is near identical to UC's.


UC's Defense combined with them playing uptempo could provide a challenge to us. But My guess is that Mick tries to slow down the tempo and does whatever his teams needs to lose this game. He always over thinks it. and Mack just out executes and out coaches him.

Paul - I did not see your question addressed about the Big Ten playing conference games this weekend. Acoording to my son (Purdue grad), they have to play some conference games earlier this year because the Big Ten tournament is a week earlier than normal. Rutgers is hosting the Big Ten tourney at Madison Square Gardens and the Gardens happens to be booked with the Big East tournament during the normal tournament week. The Big Ten Tournament is like a warmup act for the Big East Tournament. :jawdrop:

Once UC adjusted and clogged the lane, Mack adjusted and had the guards drive and dish for open 3's. Credit to the players for hitting the open shots...but Mack put his players in the best possible position to win today.

if you look on espn.com recap of Mick's T, JP was nowhere and Mick must have been talking about something else. I truly believe he wanted to get a T because he was trying to fire his bad UC team up....THEN after he gets the T he looks center court and I ASSUME he is mouthing off to JP.
That escalated his frustration.
Oh and the handshake line.
JP always tries to get under the other players' skin and this year Mick lost control because of our JP drove him bananas. I pray after JP graduates in the future he comes to XU-UC games and stares at UC bench with a big smile.

I'm not one to criticize the refs (I say that and I often do...)

But a couple of really questionable calls on fouls and turnovers. Nobody on X anywhere that ball that went off a UC player's back. At the very least, the player passing the ball should have received the turnover if the refs did not see it go off the UC player.

I know I am late to the party and this exact situation I am sure has been discussed but I havent read all the posts yet. I have been posting this all over FB and wanted to post here as well because I saw the whole thing play out and it keeps replaying in my head like slow motion.

I watched Mick going through the handshake line after the buzzer, he was shaking all the XU players hands. He then gets towards the end of the line where Scruggs is entering to get in line but facing the crowd point up to someone before fully turning around entering the line to shake hands. Cronin at that point decides he isnt waiting a millisecond and skips Scruggs and the remaining 3-4 other XU players at the end of the line which included JP. When he skips them and is walking towards the tunnel JP says something and Mick furiously turns around and aggressively moves towards and berates JP. He then has to be ESCORTED out like a child by two adults, one being one of the refs.

Then his BS postgame comments because of course he has to deflect and change the narrative from another L against XU to something else, what he is best at. The CBS article about this also references from a source that Mick was speaking profanely towards Macura throughout the game. Seems like this is what he got his T for, Mack seemed to suggest this as well.

YTG is the opposite of class, he is a terrible representation of his school on the sidelines. The ultimate little man tough guy routine. The faces, the whining, the cussing, the berating etc. For that guy to criticize any player or coach on another team is an absolute joke.

I get why Cronin's whiny behavior is getting the focus but what a strong game for us. The rebounding edge was impressive and you could tell which team was softer by a mile. I really hope that was a turning point for Kanter as he could be dangerous for us. Turnovers were a little disappointing as well as some of the 1-on-3 stuff by the underclassmen, but overall a great effort.

Anyone have an update on Tyrique? Any concerns about a post shootout letdown (especially after beating two top 20 teams?) or does the home court advantage help negate that?

Sorry for being an ass-clown. Seriously, I felt like the team played 16 great minutes yesterday and 24 “meh” minutes. The great minutes came at the beginning of each half.

Everyone excelled personally with the exception of the freshman and some inconsistent play from Q. But the crosstown is traditionally an upperclassmen’s game, so I’m not in the least concerned.

The lob plays to our bigs out of the great was brilliant to get some easy points early. uc adjusted nicely to the play, so credit to them for adapting.

We made a ton of 3s early, but they were all open. Good shootIng gentlemen.

Kanter and Gates continued to be revelations.

We seem to get a lot of our shots blocked, and it’s not just one person. I think all of Kanter, Q, Tre, and JP had shots blocked yesterday. We were also blocked a decent amount of times by Baylor and ASU. I wonder if there are any adjustments we can make for that.

And yes, I sure hope tyrique is alright. He’s such a tremendous force down low. And although I Love Kanter and Gates, Jones and O’Mara are more bruisers and we need their presence.

I think Mack wants them to be aggressive taking to the hoop, even if it means getting a few blocked. It will get us to the free throw line often enough (if it gets called, of course) and open up the outside shot more than enough to compensate (provided we make them).

I had no issue with how Q played yesterday. He knew he could beat his man off the dribble and abused him multiple times. He also had 8 assists. He got his shot blocked a couple times, which is no big deal. He did make some bad decisions, but as Mack alluded to in the postgame, some were in the second half against pressure where his teammates left him on an island. He's fine.

Scruggs played like a freshman yesterday. He needs to take this game as a learning experience. He was aggressive, but often made the wrong decision. He will also learn from this. He will learn that a point guard's job is about making everyone else successful.

Gates was a beast. Tre was a beast. Kanter was a beast.

Difference in the game was balance. It's very, very, very, very, very hard to stop a team with real offensive threats at every position. The sky is the limit for this team.

Why do you think he didnt play again? Might be old news or nothing that is a big deal but even if he wasnt seen limping and icing you dont think it is noteworthy our best big man didnt play the vast majority of the second half?
