View Full Version : Thoughts on new seats

Had an opportunity to try out a few of the new seats at Cintas last weekend (not at Madness) and was wondering if others also had similar or different reactions.
I sat in the new Overlook seats and really did not like the limited sightlines at the near basket in front of the student section. If you are sitting in your seat you can’t see the playing floor closer than the “BIG EAST” inside the lane. And that was with no one sitting in front of me in the second or third row. The video at the seat Experience Cintas site shows a clear glass wall in front of the first row. The concrete wall they actually installed is a lot harder to see through. Sure glad I didn’t go for those. The food and beverage service better be really good!
Also tried out the Front Line seats. The thick cushion and wider seats were nice, but the one-inch deep cup holder right where my elbow/forearm would knock over anything in it was useless. Also seemed to be less legroom than the Club seats they replaced.
Overall, very glad I stayed with the type of seat I already had.
Others thoughts?
Go Muskies!

It sounds to me that those seats have the same issue that the seats at Hinkle Fieldhouse have on the second floor behind the basket. You can't see the baseline or the corners very well. Since they've marketed those as more a hospitality focused area, perhaps the people won't care.

Yikes. I never considered those seats but stinks for those who did. As for my group, sat in our new seats for Madness. Couldn't be happier.

I went to one of the lunch and learn sessions over the summer and looked at the Front Line seats to see what they were like (way out of my price range) but wanted to see the look of them. I commented right away to the X representatives that the drink holders would result in a lot of unhappy individuals as they are only an inch deep. I put a drink in the cup holder and sat in the seat, the drink tipped over as I sat down. X reps said they were aware of the concerns but did not have many options.

Yep that is the same problem at Hinkle. Had those a couple of years ago from X. They were supposedly the “better seats” given to X but they were terrible.

There are smart people running the show over there. My guess is that they knew the cup holders wouldn't be great...but it was a trade-off for something else that was better. First world problems people.

If you're willing to sponsor the endowment you can have cupholders. The Drudy Cupholder Endowment has a great ring to it.

First game in my new seats tonight. The bad news? I’m 4 rows farther from the court. The good news? Being at the other end of the aisle, i know won’t have people going up and down the aisle blocking my view. Also, being in on the aisle that comes up from the corner of the court instead of the sideline, my seat is offset from the one in front of me, so I’ve got room for my right leg to really stretch out.
No one was siting in my old seats, but since it’s an exhibition game, I’ll give them a pass.
Sat in the club seats today. The room in between rows is awful. I had to turn sideways to sit. Try also had the seat numbers incorrect(they started the row at seat 2 instead of 1) the couple in front of me got kicked out of their seat because of the confusion.
I love the lighting and the feel of the arena. NBA atmosphere

A decidedly different "feel" to Cintas this year with so many changes. I'm in the end zone opposite the student section. The arena seems quite a bit darker in the seating area which makes the court a lot more pronounced. The new overhang over the student section also adds a darkening effect to the students but the noise/cheers do seem more more noticeable (or maybe the students are just louder this year IDK). The electronic ribbon on the front of the cantilever is very cool too, lots of info including real time updates to shooting percentages (field goal, free throw, 3 point) etc. Looking forward to seeing that new section packed, it was about half full for the TM game. The Woods bar was well attended the entire game. There's two lower levels of standing room below the Woods for gathering and enjoying the refreshments. FYI, the on tap selections are exactly what you'd expects from the Woods. It's Natty Light and Hudy Delight. Other standard fare are available in cans (Miller Lite, Bud heavy and Bud Light etc).
Lighting during the game is a warm white which changes to a cool white during timeouts, which kind of adds a blueish tint to the court. There are other lighting effects that happen during the game that only the fans see like a strobe light effect and blue spotlights after things like a made three pointer or a big dunk.
The darker stadium will take a little getting used to but very much two thumbs up with the changes. A first class arena still after all these years.

As my wife and I were leaving the game and walking over the walkway above the student section, I sat down in one of the seats in the last row of The Lookout. You can’t see the baseline! If there’s any post action around the basket, you can’t see it without standing. If the people in front of you are also standing, I don’t think you’d see anything anyway. I think they messed up the angle of the overhang.

I understand they entered into a partnership with Cinti Bell to provide older technology to combat the viewing issues.
Those in the first row get one phone book, the second row gets 2 phone books and the third fans gets 3, along with a seat belt.

They painted the white walls up top from white to dark blue. It makes the whole place more of an intimidating cavern now. I love it, it is a dangerous place now, not this antiseptic safe space for snowflakes that we used to have.
The Woods was rocking. First game in and already a fan favorite. I want to watch a game there. That place is absolutely brilliant. Man they did that right.
I have mixed feelings about the student section being covered up. Our student section is the best thing about the TAS. I love them and want them to be loud and happy.

I have to believe that something changed between design and construction. Nobody could be that wrong in their design. The Overlook section is a disaster.

I could not be happier with my new location. I now have a great view of the court and both benches.
I also like the new scoreboard they mounted to the front of the Overlook. Sounds like the people who will most appreciate the Overlook are those not in it, across the arena from it. The new font type is much easier to see than last years, so that is a plus.
I also agree the Woods bar project turned out VERY well. And the painting of every flat surface blue is fantastic. Great new look and feel.
I appreciate legroom, so that is bad to hear the best seats in the house have none.
Irony: This was all done to increase/improve premium seating, and the Front Line reportedly has no legroom, useless cupholders and are cramped. And the other luxury option - the Overlook is reported to have a very obstructed view. I have sat in those second floor end zone seats at Hinkle, so I recognize the issue.

It seems to me that this couldn't have worked even with Plexiglas instead of concrete. All the renderings I saw had Plexiglas, but I don't think that would have changed the issue. I'm not an engineer though, so maybe it can be fixed. I'm told there are plans to revamp it.
Also the Phone book post, might be one of the funniest posts I've read on here in a long time.

It’s a “new normal”. Joe invited me into their new booth at the Thomas More game. It’s in the Loge level toward the Student section across from the benches.
They were given an Option to stay on the floor, but would have been near the Xavier bench. This caused 2 problems. First they would be having ambient noise from Chris yelling to the court and second, their view would have been blocked a lot because Chris barely sits down. They decided to move upstairs
I listened to them last night and they really didn’t miss a beat.

Think you're right. It looks like they're using those areas for the press because there were a couple reporters on the other side near where I sit.
I really like the atmosphere now - it is reminiscent of the Gardens. The new scoreboard below the overlook is pretty nice. Maybe next year they can work on concessions, because the selection is awful. Only saving grace is a Quatman's tent - didn't know it was there before I had gotten something else but I'll definitely check it out next time.
It is odd, though - a lot of people said they got their same seats but around us in 109 it's all new. I'm sure I'll get used to it but it's kind of a strange feeling to have a whole new set of people around you after seeing the same folks since the place opened.

I think they may have switched to concrete so they could mount the new scoreboard section there. Maybe that wasn't in the original plan.

My two cents...I always thought Xavier broadcast teams dealt with waaaaay more background noise than most other you hear on radio. I always figured their sound engineer wasn't adequate microphones for that task. But if you flipped through stations listening to hoops, Joe and Byron always were competing with the crowd noise more. I did not tune in thus far, but I'm curious to hear it now.

I always thought the crowd noise, whistles, bouncing of ball, noise off rims made it more authentic. You heard very little of it (I was in the car before the game ended). I guess it was just different.

This is very annoying.
Tickets in the lower bowl are sold out...chances are, if someone is sneaking down to sit, the proper ticket owner is showing up, and that person will move. If they are lucky and pick an unoccupied seat for that night, good for them.
For most games, the lower level is 99.9% full.
I've never seen this to be an issue at Cintas.

You're going to get that for the buy games...the others, not so much.
Sneaking down to sit in a better seat is what sports fans do...sometimes you get lucky, other times you sheepishly walk away when someone waves you out of their seat.
Is it really necessary? Like I said, I've never seen an altercation or situation where this has been a problem.

I also have never had a problem with people sitting in my seats. If they are, I just ask them to move.. it’s not like they’re gonna get mad when I have a ticket in my hand showing those are my seats. It's almost offensive when 99% of the bottom bowl is sold out to season ticket holders and I have to prove that I actually sit there.
Worse than that, the ushers not allowing people back to their seats until a play stoppage. I’ve always had aisle seats and never had an issue with people blocking my view for extended periods of time. On top of that the usher in our section was not letting people OUT to the concourse to use the restrooms until play stoppages. Oh, and by the way to him “play stoppages” are not fouls or balls out of bounds but timeouts only, so that means I’m watching the game from the top of the stairs for several minutes and a group of 5 people blocking my view... far worse than someone walking past me for a second during play.

I've experienced this in professional arenas, but as you described it for Cintas, it must have been taken to an extreme. Waiting for the next timeout at my age could get messy! Fairly easy to implement in baseball between batters, possibly in football with the excessive time stoppage in that sport, but for basketball and hockey, doesn't seem to work at all. I guess we'll see if they tweak this going forward.

Apparently some ushers are taking their instructions a little too seriously. We sit in 108 and have not had a problem either game with going up or coming down and getting stopped. I spent a little time in section 104 for the Rider game and didn't have that problem either. Guess they only stop those people that look like they're going to cause trouble? :)

I'm not even sure why they started doing this. Have people complained about having to miss 10 seconds of basketball because someone was trying to get to their seat? It's baffling.

I'm curious if you sit in 103 or 105, because this is the exact problem I had with the usher in my section during the Morehead State game. I was returning from getting beers and was stopped and told to wait. When there was a stoppage in play for a foul, the usher still tried to keep me from going back to my seat (and delivering a beer to Muskie on the way.) It was weird to be stopped in the first place, but then to be told there had to be a timeout before I could go back to my seat was just silly.
At the Rider game, I was asked to show my ticket as I was coming in - 30 minutes prior to tip. I know I look creepy/suspicious, but c'mon man. I wasn't asked for it the rest of the game.
With all the amazing improvements at Cintas I've been reluctant to email X about this issue. Kinda hoping it's just a kink that will work itself out. I'm more intrigued as to why this was implemented in the first place. I've been sitting in the same general area since Cintas opened and have never once had a problem with anyone sitting in my seat. I've also never had a problem with people finding their seats during play - this ain't the symphony.

No, making mouthbreathing chuckleheads wait until a stoppage to go traipsing up and down the stairs and aisles is a wonderful thing. Time your excursions better. I can get from my seat (upper level, 2/3 way up) to the concession/pisser and back almost 100% of the time during a media timeout and if I don't it's no issue to wait to head up the stairs until there's a whistle.
In fact I move that all of you be stopped at the front door and denied entry so that I may enjoy the game in peace.

I think it’s a fine idea to hold people up until there is a stoppage in play. I dont Understand why they make you wait until a timeout though, sounds dumb to me. I’ve never been asked to show my ticket stub, but the same guy has been at the top of the aisle as long as I can remember. Maybe he just knows me, which happens a lot.

Leave it to Tardy to take safe space to a whole new level.

In fact I move that all of you be stopped at the front door and denied entry so that I may enjoy the game in peace.I can live with waiting for the next whistle (reluctantly since I can get to my seat without crossing anyone’s line of sight), but waiting until the next timeout is ridiculous. If I leave during a first half media timeout and don’t make it back by the end of it, I’m likely waiting 4 minutes of game time to return to my seats, and can’t see because of other people waiting as well. That’s much worse than someone walking past me during play for a second or two.
Also, not being allowed to go to the restroom when you need to is absurd. When ya gotta go, ya gotta go.
I suspect this usher was not properly trained, but it’s quite annoying to be treated like a child when I’ve never seen an issue that can’t be resolved with some self-policing amongst the fans.

I have zero problem with having to show my tickets when going to my seat. How hard is it for you to really pull your ticket out of your pocket for a split second. Also, have zero problem with ushers waiting for a dead ball. I think waiting for a timeout is absurd, but a deadball break should be a good guideline. I HATE when people walk in and out of seats or up the stairs when the ball is in play.

Difficult when you have a beer in each hand (which is really the only reason to leave your seat during the game).

Exactly.
And how about people wearing skinny jeans? Won’t you people think of the skinny jeans!?

I'm not claiming that it is unduly burdensome to show my ticket. I'm just curious why, after all the years Cintas has been open, that it's suddenly an issue.
As for people going up and down the aisle during play, I've never considered it to be much of a concern, and certainly not to the level that I HATE it. And anyway, they obviously aren't stopping people from leaving their seats and coming up the aisle - just trying to stop people from returning to their seats. Just seems unnecessary.

I hadn't noticed this. The usher asked for my ticket on the first game and I just thought with the seat redraw this was simply a way to remind you to go to your new seat / help you find your new seat.

Still waiting for ushers in the upper deck to help us find our new seats. I found the Woods pretty easily on my own

It's funny you mention that. Forget upper level fans sneaking into the lower bowl. With the Woods and the craft bars it's lower level fans sneaking upstairs.

I always get my seat checked and it's BECAUSE I wear skinny jeans.
