Xavier University Director of Athletics Greg Christopher (http://goxavier.com/staff.aspx?staff=4) announced today that the contract of Sedler Family Men's Head Basketball Coach Chris Mack (http://goxavier.com/coaches.aspx?rc=254) has been extended by a year through the 2022-23 season. Mack, who is in his ninth season at the helm, is 17 wins shy of taking over as Xavier's all-time winningest head basketball coach.

Great news I think. Not sure exactly if this really does much of anything. Hopefully, he got a big raise.......

I seem to remember the last time they extended him, they didn't talk about an increase in base pay.

Elite 8 level coach, he should have gotten a raise.

Exactly. Glad to see the right thing get done. Hope he's paid fairly and is very happy for a long, long time....

The one year extension is automatic because they made the tourney... every year X makes the tourney Mack gets an additional year no matter what. This is hardly news... but hopefully they were able to get him a little more money.

This is a complete assumption, but I'd be surprised if he didn't. Isn't enrollment going up? We have a decent amount of new funding coming in, and you get more money the deeper you go in the tournament, even if it's a couple hundred thousand each year we make the tournament, that's not bad at all in my opinion.

Need to get him up near 2.0 MM a year IMHO

He's a Top 20 coach.

Chris Mack turned down IU and OSU this offseason. He also bought a new house -- some might call it a mansion (although that was already in motion before those vacancies). Chris is well taken care of. He's not the highest paid BE coach, but he also doesn't live in NY, DC, Chicago or Philly.

In Mack's statement he mentioned both being at his alma mater and in his hometown. Not mentioned (but also very true) is that it's a relatively inexpensive place to live.

According to Xavier's latest publically available IRS-990 form covering the 2015-2016 fiscal year, Mack's total compensation is roughly $1.67M. I don't know if that is everything Mack earns in his capacity as head coach but if it is, he definitely deserves a raise.

I could easily see that being around $2mil with incentives.

I'd be very surprised if that's his total compensation. For example, Mick makes $400,000 in base salary, $400,000 for radio and TV appearances, $400,000 for personal appearances, and $600,000 for UCs deal with Under Armor. Perhaps someone smarter than me could break down which of these would or wouldn't be included on the tax form, but I would bet it's leaving some things off.

Mack's compensation breaks down as follows: base compensation...$394K, bonus and incentive compensation...$50K, other reportable compensation...$$1.171M, retirement and other deferred benefits...$25K, nontaxable benefits...$29K. Does this include radio, shoes, etc??? No idea.

Yes. That includes all of Chris's XU-related income (e.g., radio show, shoe contract, summer camps, and appearance fees). He might get to make side money from local endorsements/commercial spots (if he does them) that don't include XU references. But I'm not sure about that.

Does anybody really know what the Sedler's are contributing? Size of the fund, any limitatations, etc.?

I don't believe the endowment has been fully funded. Also I believe the goal was to use the Sadler's initial contribution to encourage others to find the endowment as well. I'm not sure the exact sum to date, but that's probably pretty a little high as I understand the Sedler contribution is being funded over time. Also bear in mind it's structured as an endowment, so only the earnings will be touched. So assuming there's $5mm funded (and again I don't think there is yet), that's about $250k/yr (paying out at the education standard 5%).

Haha I'll start now by budgeting $20 every month, by the time I get out of god forsaken medical school I'm sure that it'll be basically $5mil

I don't know, $10/month might do it.
