That sucks. AAC way better in baseball though so makes sense.

Yeah, after the initial surprise wore off and I thought about it more, it makes sense.

I'm guessing UC is paying him more money.

Due to graduation/draft, our team will blow next year. So timing is good for Googs.

If what I have heard is accurate, and assuming he makes as much as UC was paying Ty Neal (who had less experience and less success), Googs will be making a lot more money. As in, more than doubling his salary.

I can't imagine Xavier pays its baseball coach too well. The program has to lose money hand over fist. However, Googs had them right on the edge of the level where you can make up for the lack of revenue with positive exposure. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of confidence Xavier can really get past that level.

I hear it's official now.

I believe Ty Neal was making a little over 200k.

Correct. He was paid $201,850 as of 2 years ago (http://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/index.ssf/2016/03/50_ohio_college_head_coaching.html).

Strange move, BE to the AAC. I am not sure what kind of move that is. Hasn't X pretty much beat on UC the last few years in baseball?

Not strange at all. The Big East is an ungodly bad baseball league. The AAC is the #4 RPI league this year, and is adding Wichita State next year (who blows goats now but went to the College World Series regularly back in the '80s and '90s and has a huge stadium).

I don't follow NCAA baseball, but it looks like there is (or at least has been) a significant delta between the AAC and Big East:
YEAR AAC CONF RPI BIG EAST CONF RPI
2014 6 18
2015 3 18
2016 6 16
2017 4 10

Just looked, they are better top to bottom. St. Johns was it for the BE.

There was probably a feeling that Googins hit his ceiling at Xavier the past 2 seasons with trips to the regional finals. UC does have better baseball facilities and a better league in the American when it comes to baseball (UCF, USF, East Carolina, Houston, Tulane and UConn come to mind).
At the end of the day, he probably wanted to exit on a high note given the seniors and players likely to be drafted that won't be back in 2018.

Creighton is usually a decent regular-season program, but they never got over the hump against Xavier in the postseason. St. John's actually beat them twice the year Xavier DIDN"T even qualify for the Big East tournament in Omaha 2 seasons ago.

It makes a ton of sense, though. Sounds like he's doubling his salary. Doesn't have to uproot his family. No one at Xavier really gives a flying F about baseball anyway, so there's virtually no animosity.

Xavier really needs a baseball stadium - or, really, just a stadium. Imagine building a decent complex into that hill with the beautiful view of the rest of Xavier's campus. I would imagine that could draw some recruits and do wonders for the program, as well as build some exposure and a fanbase. I know through the last four years interest has grown in the program - it would be a shame if what was there suddenly dropped off again because of this.

I suspect new facilities would cost about 10 million based on what I saw if Louisville's stadium. That's a tall order for Xavier without some alumni stepping forward. Even Louisville had a donor step forward with 5 million.
