No. It's a gathering where steaks (chicken) and beer are served. The coaches speak and you get to talk to other Xavier fans. Not fictional at all.

The chicken/steak thing is also a little confusing. Beer, not confusing......until I drink some, then....

OK, I am honestly shocked about how little I learned about the Cincinnati area during my time at Xavier. I could find my way to Dana's and back, but other than that I had some blinders on. I guess I was just focused on my stellar GPA!

Not meaning any disrespect to those from the area, but many who grew up in Cincy don't know where Hamilton or Butler County are located. In fact, I'm going to google it right now.

Is there much reason to know about it? Farms and suburban sprawl? I'm sure someone is happy to live up there, not in Cincy and not in Dayton.

The Butler County Steak Fry is a definite must. I think it started with Skip. Last year Chris was out in Colorado with USA Basketball but Travis and Jeremy Growe were there as were the women's coaches. You mingle with great people and fans and you get your hat. You meet guys from the Lew Hirt Society and you go home stuffed. I don't care for Budweiser, though.

Is it like a ticket type of event, how much do they usually run? It seems like an interesting thing, I wouldn't mind going.

Since it is in Butler county (suburb northeast of Cincy) do they actually fry the steaks? Is this where the term "country fried steak" originated?
I prefer my steaks cooked on a grill. Doesn't mean I wouldn't attend this event.

And I am proud to say, commenced, perpetrated and operated each year by an illustrious 1972 Classmate of mine, and fellow 2 time Back to Back Intramural Softball Champion team member KP.
Because of work obligations, I have been unable to attend for too many years, but I am BACK this year. Coming off an Elite 8 performance and the prospects for next season, this event will be OFF THE HOOK this year.

I have gone the past 4-5 years, usually meet Runner and SurfXU there. It's $40.00 and you get the meal and all the beer you want. It's a cool event. They usually give out a decent hat too. It's at Hamilton Badin High School.

Travis and everyone else did a great job last year but it's always great to hear Coach Mack. Seems like the past couple of years there's been a torrential downpour which has made the trip to the beer truck outside a little wet. Sounds like there's going to be some real derelicts there this year based on some names in this thread... don't bring your teenage daughters and hide your wallets everyone if you plan on going... jeesh... gonna be a great time had by all. I'm so upset that these dudes were out on the street. BUT....
My guy Kev, who runs this thing with an iron fist, made it very clear that A) This was the largest crowd ever at this deal (Clearly because MOR was making his maiden appearance) and B) For people to get their damn reservations in EARLY. It is now clearly posted on the XU.edu website under alumni so there is no excuse not to reserve. High quality hat was given out last night too. After seeing The Coz over the weekend, he could have used one of those!

It's just an event put on by Xavier Alumni where the AD and various coaches come and mingle with the public. They then give updates/previews of the upcoming season and take questions from the audience.

Elite shooter, probably will never even be an average defender, limited skillset otherwise (relative to the high-D1 level). Yeah, I can see it. You would switch out the secondary skills to match the respective positions.

But doesn't he have a half foot on Brad, lessening the chances of a broken nose when it gets slapped back at him? And he at least tries to attack the rim in HS. He had a better handle than I expected, based on a little YouTube.

Remember that Brad in high school mixtapes put the ball on the floor too. Ridder does have decent handles for a shoot-first combo forward, though.

This story is 100% true- straight from CMack's mouth.
Because Ridder was the only guy whose high school graduated early, he was the only one on campus in 1st summer session. Everyone else shows up this weekend. The Ridder story is even better because he was in the Cintas practice gym at like 2 in the morning shooting the 575 shots, then texted Mack who gave him the let's see when you're guarded comeback.
I love the way our coach interacts with his players.

Beer was flowing all evening
Grilled steak or chicken dinner for about 250 Xavier fans – inside air conditioned multi-purpose area which hosted a volleyball camp just an hour and half prior (i.e. great work by Keven Pater and those responsible for the event).
After dinner, there was a very nice program giving Xavier athletic updates
Greg Christopher spoke briefly about a few items … seat selection and Cintas improvements, Baseball winning the Big East and it’s new coach, Billy O’Connor.
Coach Brian Neal spoke briefly on the WBB program, the new coaches, and said something about each of the incoming freshman
Coach Mack first received a standing ovation when he got up to speak. The vibe in the room all evening was very optimistic. So far (knock on wood), there hasn’t been off-season drama and we all know we have an elite 8 team with valuable returning players and promising recruits. Chris also focused on each of the incoming recruits and gave a fairly honest initial assessment of each. The jump from high school to college is always huge and Chris thought there would be a couple freshman who will make the transition a bit easier than might be typical. There were a handful of questions and answers.
A couple other tidbits ...
Coach Mack and Pete Rose are becoming texting buds. (funny story Chris told to open)
The after-event goal was for his two girls to catch Miami River catfish on dough-balls despite Lainee's busted, recovering knee cap (Chris described the fracture was barely barely visible and exchanged some joking sassy-frass looks with his daughter)
Fun to see and meet other posters and speak with Andy Mac, Byron and Joe, Sr. Rose, Luke Murray, and a few others from Xavier. Others should add some of the tidbits they heard from Chris and the questions.
Beer flow eventually stopped as evening turned to night

Mack thought K would be able to finish the one class and he'd be fully qualified. The other players show up very soon on campus (this week) and participate in the 2nd summer academic session, work out, and participated in the limited allowed coach-player interactions.

I have been on record here as saying that Jared Ridder may turn out to be the real surprise of the class. He could be another Doellman-style player combining size and long-distance shooting ability that will make him very hard to defend.

I'd have to start right after breakfast to get 575 3's up by 2:00am. I'd need to pace myself, that's a lot of shots. And I think I'd be closer to 8.2%.

Doellman was much much more than that by his senior year but coming out of high school I'd say that is a pretty fair comparison. Also Ridder does put the ball on the floor a little as well so I wouldn't pigeon hole him into strictly a spot up shooter.

Updates:
Quentin, thrust into role last season. Shot is improving and he played with plantar fasciitis at end of season and is getting last set of shots and should be good to go.
Ridder; 6"8 Redford. Will allow them to stretch floor
Kentrevious; needs one more class. Very soft hands and excellent passer. Will not play above rim. Competed him to Stainbrook. Needs to get in better shape.
Marshall; athletic, poor mans BJ Raymond but better athlete.
Harden; winner, huge heart like Tu Holloway
Kanter; can shoot the three. Expect him to contribute immediately. Loves the different combos they can play: Lots of bigs can be on Court at same time.
Some guy asked Mack about OSU job and his possible interest and Mack replied he thought he looked better in blue.
Will definitely get home game for next season for big ten big east challenge
That's about all I recall

I don't like to hear "poor mans BJ Raymond." All the love for BJ, but it took him until his junior year for things to really become productive on both sides of the ball. So, will Marshall's athleticism move him along faster? Does he just need work on his shot? I guess I'm getting spoiled thinking this class of guys will kick butt from day one, but reality is they are freshmen and will need to develop.
