So due to budget cuts, UND had to get rid of its excellent women's hockey program. ESPN covered the story here: http://www.espn.com/espnw/sports/article/19033546/university-north-dakota-eliminates-women-hockey-men-women-swimming
Not mentioned in the article is that someone forgot to tell the team they were being axed. AFTER the announcement that the program was being cut, the team was still on the ice practicing for next season. OOPS!

That is pathetic.
What is more eyebrow-raising is the fact that ND is in a position of having to cut anything. All this money. All this money followed by a bunch of spending and expense to keep up with the Jones's?

This is North Dakota. Not Notre Dame. They cut baseball (and I think golf) last year as well.
They made the NCAA Tournament this year, but I believe they're also leaving the Big Sky, so they don't get to keep any of the money.

Note that ND is the University of North Dakota. It's not Notre Dame. Sorry it that was misleading 'dash.

No problem.
It seemed strange on both counts - that South Bend would screw up that badly from an administrative standpoint and that they didn't have enough money to keep it going.

Notre Dame also doesn't have an arena as nice as the one in the picture! LOL

Actually, The Compton Family Ice Arena is much nicer than this arena looks in the picture. Compton is not as big, but is newer and more impressive than this sheet, in my opinion.

yeah Compton is a pretty nice arena for college hockey. Haven't been to North Dakota's though, so I can't really compare.

Notre Dame's place looks nice now that I check it out. I'd still go with North Dakota's palace, but I assumed Notre Dame played in the same dump as their basketball team.

North Dakota thought those boomtime oil revenues would go on forever. Reality check.

Yep, North Dakotans are really getting their comeuppance. Dumb take. North Dakota has an oil-generated, and constitutionally protected $3 billion rainy-day fund, not to mention that it's still the 2nd most productive oil state in the country. Yes, ND is having to tighten its belt, but the fact is the cuts at UND are a result of gross mismanagement, not wild over-spending. As a point of reference, UND currently pays their MBB coach of 11 seasons a whopping $90K per year. On the other hand, recent X opponent NDSU has a larger overall athletic budget, yet it is not experiencing any of the same sorts of cuts.

When you have a 1 billion shortfall in the budget, the fund lasts 3 yrs,:

26% is a pretty good cut:
