BEAST MODE LAST YEAR:
I am sure I didn't call it that last year, but I like the sound of BEAST MODE! Plus, the real life BEAST MODE retired, so it is my time to recycle if I see fit.
Last year, Xavier had an elite team. One of the best we ever had. We were a 2 seed. And just about every game, we went on a run that ending up crushing our opponents and ending the game. Sure, most games were competitive for a bit, but then came BEAST MODE and we went on a run and took it out of their control.
Doesn't take a long memory to go back to last year, are realize we did this all the time. The runs were legendary. That was a fantastic basketball team. They played some awesome BEAST MODE.
BEAST MODE THIS YEAR
This year we didn't have much BEAST MODE. I waited all year for it, and it didn't much happen. We were ahead of just about every team we played in the second half, and many times we just crapped the bed. CRAP THE BED IS NO BEAST MODE.
Crap the bed is frankly a poor substitution for BEAST MODE. And I have to say if I have a vote, I will vote for BEAST MODE 11 times out of 10. Crap the bed strategy almost got us banned from the tournament.
Let me juxtapose the two:
In crap the bed mode, we play honorably and hard, have a late lead, and then choke every time. We get right where we need to be, but then some confluence of events (and turnovers) turns every player into a deer staring into the headlights. And to our credit we didn't choke every time, but it seemed that way. And even some of the games we won (at Creighton, Seton Hall) felt like we did everything we could do to crap the bed.
In BEAST MODE we still play honorably and hard, but instead of everyone being afraid to shoot it seems like we don't have enough basketballs, because all the kids wanna make it rain. We get going, and everyone wants to pile on. We used to do it all the time. I love seeing the young men having so much fun.
Florida State marked the reappearance of BEAST MODE. Chris Mack said we were playing "Loose". The man is a master of the understatement. I would like to play "Loose" for the last four games of the tournament. I would like to play Loose against Sean Miller's Lexus. And when the time comes to take the game away, give me some BEAST MODE.
It is time to take what is rightfully ours. Nobody is going to give it to us. Nobody is going to hold the door and say "Come on in". We have to crash the party. We have to fight for every bit of it.
We are going to punch Arizona in the face. I want full BEAST MODE. I don't simply want to defeat them, I want to own them. I want them to never speak about what a great year they had because to do so would make them think of the tragic disfiguring they got at the end of it.
Some people may think Florida State was a fluke. After we repeat the slaughter with Arizona the pundits will realize that this is who we are, and we are here to win a National Championship.
