An hour after the game finished last night, there was still nothing on ESPN's mobile site about us winning. However they did have an article at halftime that read "FSU slowing Xavier's momentum." Yes, their headline was about FSU doing well, even when we were winning by 10.

Xavier Nation is filled with victims. I am not worried about how much ink or coverage we get, we have done fine to this point without much limelight.
Keep winning and the coverage will come. They can only ignore us for so long.

Yup. It was an interesting story because the officials actually released a statement about it, but come on. Refs missed multiple calls every game that cost teams points. This was unfortunate, but it's not like it occurred with under a minute to play in a close game. I get the coverage of the Nova upset (though it's worsened by the slobberfest the media has for Wisconsin), but Xavier's beatdown of FSU (in an upset, no less) was big news too.

It's really strange.
I woke up a bit hungover, ready to devour the news stories. Certainly, an 11-seed who just dismantled and boatraces a 3-seed in dominating fashion has to make a splash, right?
Just a few game articles. Nothing big. Meh.
Whatever, I suppose.

Who cares? We'll get plenty of coverage during the week and really, take it as a sign of respect that no one is surprised by us in the sweet 16. I'd rather have the "business as usual for Xavier" take than the "wowza look at this 11-seed Cinderella making a run!"

Not all of the matchups for Thursday have been set yet, so we will have to wait until the games finish today to find out. But there are four possible times:
7:00 PM (CBS)
7:15 PM (TBS)
9:30 PM (CBS)
9:45 PM (TBS)
Edit: I said we'd probably get a late slot because we are playing on the west coast, but then realized Gonzaga and West Virginia will be playing out there too. So who knows.

Maybe the author thought XU basketball was playing FSU football.

I'm sure the article sucked, but when it comes to the technicalities of NCAA governance, the Big East is not a Power Five conference. There are five autonomous conferences. They have been branded the Power Five. The Big East is not one of those conferences. That doesn't mean that it isn't as good on the court as those conferences, but the rules are different for those five leagues than they are for the Big East, and for the other 26 leagues.
Think of it this way. When it comes to governance, those five leagues have power that the Big East does not have. That doesn't mean that they're better than the Big East in basketball, or in any other sport, though.

It's across the board. Cost of living stipends has been the biggest one. It applies to all sports. Same with the changes to what is and isn't allowed during official visits and changes to the off-season practice rules.

I'm not complaining or feel like a victim...but I did watch Sportscenter last night for 45 mins during their 11 pm show to see what they had to say. My buddies got annoyed and turned the channel. But 45 mins and no talk of X/FSU. I found it strange and my buddies were commenting about it too. They showed women's highlights...but no 11 beating a 3 by 25 pts. I still haven't seen any highlights or discussion about the game on tv.

I recorded 1 hour this morning and nothing either.
I think they did talk about it on college gameday but I missed it.
Part of the problem is 2 big things happened in other games, Nova lost and Northwestern (the media darling) got screwed in a close game. Those took a lot of attention.

I was watching the Scott van Pelt Sportscenter after Xavier beat Maryland to hear his take because he's a Maryland guy and his producer (I think) went to Xavier. He mentioned that during Sportscenter, they are only allowed to show 2 minutes of tournament highlights per 30 minutes -- I think he said he was happy he didn't have to see his team losing on his show. After he mentioned it, when watching other Sportscenter episodes I noticed that ESPN has really been picky on which tournament highlights they show, so it seemed accurate to me.
And if anyone cares, he made a bet with his producer and he said he has to eat 'Cincinnati' chili on Sportscenter this coming week.

Long ride home today with a lot of national sports radio. The ACC only having 2 teams left got a ton of coverage about how maybe they weren't as good as people thought. There was also a lot of "...and meanwhile, Xavier comes in fairly unheralded and just does what they do, and are headed to yet another Sweet 16." I kind of like that that's not shocking to anyone!

Myron Medcalf is not good IMO. Honestly the only college ball writer they have that I really enjoy is Jeff Borzello. He's by far the most knowledgeable in terms of the actual players because he follows the recruiting trail so thoroughly.
In terms of this thread and disrespect, was nice to see Bilas recognizing X and BE yesterday:
"Remaining Cinderellas? Xavier and Butler, perennial Sweet 16 teams? Nah. Gonzaga, perennial Sweet 16 participants? Nah."
"Of Sweet 16 teams: 13 are Power 5 conference teams, 2 are major conference teams (Butler, Xavier), one is a mid-major team (Gonzaga)."
Interesting to say Big East is Major Conference, but not Power 5 Conference. I agree with him actually, just cause they're only major in basketball. I had never heard anyone say it like that before

Keep winning and eventually they're going to have to mention us.
Perhaps part of the reason we haven't been mentioned very much is that we boat raced our first two opponents. While both games have been thoroughly enjoyable for us to watch as Xavier fans, the rest of America was probably bored to death because they were such beat downs.

I can't help but think that we sometimes collectively come off as the last people in the world that a server would want seated in their section. We complain about the tip times, or the location, or the coverage, or in this case lack thereof. I don't really care about how much time people I don't care about or listen to anyway are spending talking about Xavier.
How much coverage has Arizona gotten? Or Baylor? Or Kansas? Or West Virginia? Have they gotten more or less than Xavier has. We are now to a point that Xavier making the Sweet Sixteen, even as a #11 seed, isn't really interesting or unique anymore. Northwestern has never been in the tournament, and they had one game end with a bizarre foul where the Vandy player thought they were behind, and another game that saw a missed goal tend where the NCAA actually acknowledged the blown call. That's interesting. That's unique. That's going to get talked about.
Michigan had a plane go off the runway, and has been a roll ever since. They beat a Louisville team that many were picking to the Final Four, who is also a brand name.
West Virginia, or Kansas, or Arizona, or Xavier making the Sweet Sixteen isn't. It's understandable that the coverage has been what it is. Basketball people know that Florida State was good, but the media caters to the casual fan, and to the casual fan Xavier making the Sweet Sixteen after beating Florida State just doesn't require a lot of chatter.
And, that's a good thing! Virtually NOTHING in my life goes exactly the way I want it to. I'm usually satisfied if only part of it goes the way I want it to. We're in the Sweet Sixteen. I'm satisfied. No complaints here. I sure as hell wouldn't call it being disrespected. When something happens frequently, there is less of a need to point it out.

I was at least hoping to see a quick interview after the games with a couple of the players after the great victories. It seems that players from other schools are regularly pulled aside for a quick quote or two after their games end.

Funny, I started this thread because the X/FSU game was the first I noticed where a game was not discussed in the studio right after it finished. Being that it was a beat down on a heavily favored team made it all the more odd. It's not that Xavier necessarily deserved 5 minutes of discussion after the game in the CBS/TNT studio, but at least acknowledge that there was a game that finished and mention the score.
Though, I do love that all of those blowhard sports analyst tried to make X seem so inferior to the opponents they faced (and now they look like idiots). Also, I do think being a little disrespect is just what this X team needed: Press telling everyone they won't win (which fires them up), instead of flattering press (which could have lead to complacency).
A side note: I was a little surprised that our own Pete Gillen picked X to lose to Maryland. And then when he got that wrong he picked X to lose to FSU. And now he is picking X to lose to Arizona. I can only hope it's a superstitious/reverse psychology thing going on there.
My comments were to general X discussion as I didn't see the coverage until I got home and the recording quit right after the game. I didn't realize I missed.....nothing. I do agree being the underdog with an "us against the world" approach can be effective. As for Pete? Let the streak continue!
And Jesus said of Peter (Gillen)...
“Before the rooster crows twice and the elite eight is set, you will deny your old school three times."
and so it was... Peter picked Maryland over X, Florida State over X, and Arizona over X.
Peter then remembered what Jesus had said to him and he broke down and wept.
