FSU is big and athletic. They average 80+ PPG. Clearly we have to slow them down and rebound the ball well.

I expect a good amount of zone tonight, although that could hurt our rebounding. We'll need everyone crashing the boards.

Maybe table that zone until tomorrow---I do think this is going to be a real challenge for us, but FSU can be streaky. Any 3 seed is gonna be tough.

Sagarin ratings would indicate that we will be 4 point dogs. Not bad for a shot at the second weekend.

It will be a tough one, but I said of any potential top 3 seed I'd want FSU. Not to say I think we will beat them but they would be the worst of the top 3 seeds. They will be one of the top 3 teams we have played all year. They are really, really long. I think it will be tough to score. They are not a good shooting team (our zones should do well). It is a must to avoid those bad turnovers that turn to really easy buckets- I anticipate a lot of press from them. I don't like our chances, but if we have any chance it will be surprisingly because of our defense.

This will be a tough one...Kaiser Gates needs a big game with him potentially making some of their freakishly long guys playing out on the perimeter. That's a huge key to this game.

You're not kidding on the tall, long, and athletic part and after watching some of their game last night I agree 100%. Turnovers will kill us, especially if we give it up 15 times again. Their shot selections were also odd, not sure if their offense runs off of pump fakes to try and clear space in the middle or if they lack confidence but lots of shots I'd expect guys like Tre, JP, and Kaiser to take all day they'd leave to work the ball into the paint.

They are a poor free throw shooting team and a poor 3pt shooting team, which we are both of those as well. They did struggle to put away a 14 seed though and they do struggle a littl but away from Tallahassee. All 8 losses came on the road. But to finish 2nd in the best conference is pretty damn good. If we can dominate the boards and keep, them from getting second chance points I like our chances.

Some of those guys looked like monsters. I'm not sure how Michael Ojo, the 7'1" 304 lb guy, only plays 10 mins / 3 rebs per game. In my limited time watching last night, he looked like a major force. Maybe he's not coordinated and I just saw a few plays where he played above his norm. Any insights on him?

The size is scary:
Koumadje is 7'4"
Ojo 7'1"
Isaac 6'10"
Smith and Kabengele 6'9"
Cofer 6'8"
Bacon 6'7" and he's a guard! 17pts/gm

Believe it or not I think FGCU is more athletic than we are. They had some guys that can get looks with one on one stuff and we don't really have that. Like I said, the only reason I think we have a shot is bc I saw FSU struggle against FGCU zone. We are really going to struggle scoring.

Yeah that is so true. But like the poster above said, they have Hamilton as their coach. I am starting to not like our chances. Baylor was athletic and they demolished us after 30 mins. But hey! That's why they play the game. It's all gravy from here on out for me anyway. Every time I am ready to give up on Mack he always finds a way to TOTALLY REDEEM HIMSELF

Goodwin got to the rim a few times but that was about it. FGCU's best plays were dribbling into the middle of the FSU defense and watching at least 2 players collapse on him to dish it down below or outside for a wide open shot. If we limit turnovers (JP not throwing the ball into the elbows of jumping 6'8+ players) and use ball fakes to open up our scoring chances, we will be just fine. Not to mention, Mack will definitely out coach Bunny Colvin of Hamsterdam.

We will obviously be behind the 8 ball in terms of athleticism. But that doesn't mean we can't win. While very athletic, they don't seem like a very smart team. I saw a tweet that said "they go from looking like potential national champ contenders to looking like they'd shouldn't even be a tournament team in 2 minutes".

Every team has weaknesses...Mack will find them. Just a matter of execution. And it would help if JP, Tre, and Kaiser are on. Need to make shots, we're not going to beat them in the paint.

They have to be the biggest team in the tournament.

Probably because he was exhausted after playing 10 minutes. The pace was way too fast for him. He should be on a team that plays a deliberate half court game.

I thought Koumadje looked way better than Ojo last night.

I also thought #14 Mann was basically the only guy for FSU who looked around and realized he was bigger, stronger, faster, and could jump higher than all of FSU. He seemed to have that killer instinct to get to the bucket repeatedly that a lot of them lacked last night.

No. 3 Florida State Seminoles (-6) vs. No. 11 Xavier Musketeers

Saturday, 6:10 p.m., Orlando, Florida

Over/under: 151

Tuley's take: I was glad I faded Florida State in its first-round game, as the Seminoles won 86-80 but didn't cover against Florida Gulf Coast. I'm looking to fade them again with Xavier, especially after feeling I missed a great play on the Musketeers with their outright upset of Maryland. ESPN's BPI had Xavier rated better than Maryland, but I just couldn't go for it getting just two points. BPI has this game closer than the 6-point spread and I'm not passing it up.

Trevon Bluiett is the key player for Xavier and he showed it Thursday; he carried the Musketeers on his back with 21 points, including four 3-pointers in the second half after struggling in the first half. He was supported by Sean O'Mara, who dominated inside with 18 points off the bench. But what really gives the Musketeers a chance at the upset here is a defense that can excel at either man-to-man or zone. Look for the Mountaineers to try to take Florida State's big men away, slow down the pace and take this game to the wire.

The pick: Xavier +6* (lean to under 151)

From another ESPN preview:

Xavier vs. Florida State
The Musketeers weren't supposed to make it this far after losing Edmond Sumner to a torn ACL in January. Yet Chris Mack's team is still standing, thanks to big games from Trevon Bluiett and Sean O'Mara against Maryland.

Now Xavier faces an even larger challenge than the Terrapins. Florida State is the tallest team in the field, and the Seminoles are likely aware that the Musketeers allowed opponents to make a whopping 56 percent of their 2s in Big East play. On paper this is a frightening matchup for Xavier ...

But did I happen to mention that Mack's guys weren't even supposed to make it this far?

This game will be rough. Omara is going to be a very bad play in this game. If Xavier is going to pull this upset they will need all three of the following to happen.

1. Blueitt and JP need to combine for 45. Our bigs won't do much offensively; we are going to need to win with guards in this one. Blueitt can't have an off half.

2. Gates needs his best defensive game of the year and play 25 minutes. He is the only Big who can realistically guard Isaac on both the block and the perimeter. Tyrique might be able but he may be too short. Gates will need to be huge defensively for us to win.

3. Q needs to be on point. Getting stripped with one man pressure for easy deuces can't happen. If he has 2 TO or less we will have a shot. More than that is scary.

There are other factors but these are my big three. It can happen let's not close the 2017 book just yet.

FSU has very big bigs, but they're not skilled. I think Sean can have success.

Who is Xavier Hayes? Do you mean Xavier Rathan Mayes, FSU's point guard, who Goodin will be guarding?

Jonathan Isaac scares me for FSU. 6'10 freshman can play inside and out. Averages 12 points and almost 8 rebounds. Very talented. Not sure we have anyone who can matchup with him besides Gates.

I think Xavier plays more zone than man in this one.

None of this needs to happen for a W. All 3 of your points are a bit far fetched. Other than the UC game, have they ever combined for 45? Gates won't be guarding XRM and to expect only 2 mistakes from Q is unrealistic.
How about this. Hold them to under 40% shooting, beat them on the boards and make more free throws than they take.

Might have been on a little sauce yesterday when writing lol. Yeah definitely mixed X-Mayes up with Isaac. That aside I still do think all three need to happen. I just don't see Omara playing high enough to be effective or moving with the lateral quickness he will need to compete with their athleticism. I think JP will have to hit a few threes and not be as bad behind the arc as he was vs Maryland. Blueitt should get his 20-25 regardless. Finally Q has to have almost no turnovers. We all know FSU shoots pretty bad. We have to force them into set pieces all game and not give them easy points in transition which is where they excel.

Maryland was admittedly perplexed by Xavier's defensive scheme which jumped around from man to 2-3 to 1-3-1. It's the first thing Coach Turgeon mentioned in his post-game presser. FSU is not an especially-sharp shooting team, so a similar fate tonight would not be surprising. Bacon is their leading 3-point shooter and has missed his last 10 attempts, plus he's 5 of his last 28 from deep so hopefully he's in his own head right now.

Bacon leads FSU with 57 threes made on the season. After him, their next best three go 39 (Rathan-Mayes), 38 (Savoy) and 31 (Isaac.)

By comparison, Tre has 84, JP 61, Malcom 42 and Kaiser 36. If this game comes down to an outside shooting battle, the numbers favor X.

I think we defend them just like Maryland, but maybe throw more zone looks at them to protect the paint and force them outside of their comfort zone. FSU scores a lot for a team that doesn't rely on the 3 ball, so this will be a great challenge for our defense.

On paper, this is the type of game Xavier always loses -- where they just get run out of the building by a team that out reaches them for offensive boards an extra possessions, changes shots in the paint on defense, etc.

If Xavier is going to win, they're going to need to have big games from JP and Gates on the perimeter, because I don't know that X has anyone that will be able to score inside regularly against this type of size / length.

Someone said this is like playing Baylor. That is probably the most accurate statement here. Gonna just have to find a way to play bigger. Limiting them to one shot will be huge

Yes and no. Baylor plays very slow and play at one of the slowest tempos in the country. FSU is top 40 in tempo.

We are going to have to limit turnovers or they will run. Way to win this is to slow it down, try to play inside out, good zone d and rebounding. Stating the obvious but hope Sean and Kaiser can contribute. They are big and long with the style of WVU or Baylor so we got to bring it. Whatever the result, they've exceeded expectations given what's missing at the PG position.

It is worth pointing out that since I moved to Tampa in 2015 my son and I have attended every game X has played in Orlando and they have gone 7-0. We haven't yet bought tickets to the game tonight so if you are superstitious we are taking donations. :)

Go X!

I don't believe in superstitions as far as like me wearing blue socks x will win. However if the players knew about my blue socks and it gave them extra motivation then I do believe. You being at Xavier games in Orlando does give the players extra motivation. They probably see you there. If they look in the stands and don't see you and your son they are going to play awful. GET YOUR ASS DOWN THERE. $69 ticket depending on car I say $50 in gas. Now go go go go go!

About as good of a first half as we could have wanted. Handled their run and made a few huge shots to hold the lead (looking at you Malcolm and Kaiser) and got a look at the zone. Well, basically no way X shoots that well and FSU so poorly in the next half. Key will be if X can steal a couple points here and there to stem the inevitable runs coming. Also, gotta hope Isaac and Bacon don't realize they can get whatever they want against the zone. Reminds me of the 2015 Arizona game in that way except X was never up 10 I don't believe.

No one in real foul trouble. Come out and be aggressive in that zone. Can't ask for anything more. 20 mins to the second weekend.

Congrats on the win, we meet again....Chris Mack continues to be the badass for Xavier we all hoped he would be. Has to be a top five coaching move which worked out perfectly for both programs.

And not to toot my own horn, but these are my thoughts from page 3:

FSU has very big bigs, but they're not skilled. I think Sean can have success.

I think Xavier plays more zone than man in this one.

1. 12 or fewer turnovers. 2. Even or win rebounding battle. 3. Give up fewer than 6 threes

This team executed at a very high level today. Awesome job by everyone.

There was one factor I completely ignored when putting down my analysis of this game. Coach Mack has infinitely more NCAA experience and 100% was the better and more prepared coach. For the flack some people throw his way he really showed how important an experienced postseason coach is.

I was close with mine. Gates showed up big, Blueitt and JP combined for 39 ( i said 45 so was off), and most importantly said Q needed 2 or fewer TO. He had 2. Time to put the Wildcats in a hole in the desert

I feel like the team executed many more set plays than usual. I commend coach for making that happen because they frequently gain better opportunities than freelancing.

Idk for sure, but Xfactor has definitely said similar things

Off topic but any explanation why only 2 minutes for Gaston? Tyrique and Omara are playing well but I'd think there are more than 2 minutes for him. Is he in the dog house? Injured? Just not good enough? Just trying to find out what you all know

Have I been critical of Kaiser? Sure. But I have always been quick to praise when he's played well.

He is a trooper..I was watching and no bad blood. Next game he could be needed. Same thing happened to Farr against Wisconsin(different result)..in that game O'Mara matched Happ with 2 baskets during his time in the game. It just happens sometimes. I still think Bernard's lament after Marquette (as close to calling out team as you can do and still be on team..constructive and self critical) was an underrated key

He's an insurance policy right now. You don't need to be super deep this time of year. You play the hot hand and it clearly isn't Gaston right now.

I've got to plug the ol' alma mater here. Ohio's first round drubbing of 3 seed Georgetown in 2010 was a thing of beauty. The Bobcats almost hung 100 on 'em! Even though the margin of victory wasn't quite as much as here, the 14 seed dominating the 3 seed start to finish is definitely worthy of mention. Can't find full game highlights on youtube though, stupid CBS. They're on dailymotion, but the quality isn't great... http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x151j5k_14-ohio-vs-3-georgetown-highlights_sport

But in that game, it was clear Ohio was the better team for THAT NIGHT, but probably wouldn't do it again. Here, I think Mack & Crew made it clear X could definitely hand it to FSU again.

Joe: Three's on the way from Gates...got it!!

Byron: No he didn't, no he didn't!

Joe: Yes he did! 66-45 Xavier leads now...

Love it!

I've been thinking this for awhile, but didn't want to "jinx" the team. It seems like the year AFTER the "should have" is the year we do well. David West's year was a "should have" been great year....and we lose in the second round. The following year? The Run. Last year, Wisconsin spoils what "should have" been a great run. This year? Sweet 16 at least. Keep it up boys. 4 more.

I guess my only contention with this is that we were unranked to start last year and got our best regular season ranking ever. This year we were preseason top-10 and borderline missing the tournament until the Depaul win.

They had the postgame press conference for Xavier and then an interview with grad assistant Allen Payne during the postgame coverage. It was a little noisier than normal given that the Florida-Virginia game was in progress at that point.

I posted this before the season started, but I think it might be more relevant now than before. Preseason rankings seem to be a pretty good indicator of success in the tournament. To quote this article (https://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/11/in-n-c-a-a-tournament-overachievers-often-disappoint/?_r=0) by Nate Silver of 538:

In contrast to polls conducted during the regular season, which aspire to rank teams on the merits, the preseason poll is essentially a prediction of how the teams are likely to perform. The writers who vote in the poll presumably consider things like coaching, the quality of talent on the roster, and how the team has performed in recent seasons.

Although we all like to make fun of sportswriters, these predictions are actually pretty decent. Since 2003, the team ranked higher in the AP preseason poll... has won 72 percent of tournament games. That's exactly the same number, 72 percent, as the fraction of games won by the better seed.
