View Full Version : Goodbye to Cintas Friends

Since that was the last home game before the seats get torn out for the "new and improved" Cintas Center, lots of us were saying goodbye to the people we've been sitting by for years. They're people we usually never see outside of Xavier home games, but they're still people we've grown to know and enjoy talking with. Who knows who we'll be sitting by next year, if we even renew. I've heard from many people that if they can't get seats they like, ideally, the same as this year, they won't renew. Time will tell.

The amount of goodwill that the athletic department has raced through is huuuuggge. Wonder if it's going to be worth it in the end.

They probably weren't counting on the six game losing streak to end the season. Definitely testing the sales team's mettle now.
I'm a "wait and see" on tickets. Will depend on what I can get at my ranking.

Yeah, a bit of bad timing there..... Hope it turns out to be pretty much a non-event.

Good..our crowds suck anyways. Let's get some people in those seats that will rock the tas.

I've recently experienced this with another seasons ticket package I have. It's been several years and folks are still adjusting to those around them. You lose people who are life family. It is a tough adjustment. And if they don't get as good as tickets, or have to spend more, it makes it doubly as hard. As you said "time will tell".

Those with season tickets now, should be able to purchase tickets close to where they are now. For many, similar seats will cost more, but there is a chance they pay less.
Like Xeus, I'm taking a wait and see approach. I have tickets with my Dad, and we will know more once we are able to see and select actual seating location. My guess is we stay in the same section and move back a few rows. Plan B would be to move back even farther and buy 4 seats instead of 2.
I don't think the shuffle will be as traumatic to me as it is for some. There are a lot of people around me I will miss, but a few that I will be glad sit some place else.

If a shuffling of the seats causes someone to cancel their season tickets, I'm not sure what to say. Even if my only choice was to sit in the very top row in the furthest seat from the court (which honestly still wouldn't be a bad view in Cintas), I'd still renew.

Let's wait and see what happens. Remember this is about revenue, if X wants to compete at the highest levels they need to generate the cash necessary. As fans we all want that. I've heard Marquette does this every year.

Most season ticket holders I know, including me, are saying the same thing, that we fully intend to renew our seats, as long as we like the seats we're able to get. My seats are over $2,000. I'm not going to spend that much to sit in seats I don't like. If I have to move back a few rows, hell, even ten rows, that's fine. If I have to give up sitting on the aisle, that's a problem. I'm 6'5" and don't want to be stuck between two people for two plus hours with no leg room.
A friend of mine sits in the area where seats are actually going away, i.e. one of the first 4 to 6 rows in the sections from foul line to foul line. He got a call from the university letting him know that in order to be assured of getting a seat where he is now, all it takes is a check for something like $25,000 to bump his Musketeer Point total high enough. He won't be writing that check. At the end of the day, this is really a money grab.

I'm sure most of us will get our same seats back, I agree completely. It was one thing when we were laving the Gardens, but this is something completely different and does suck that the people that you've grown accustomed to sitting with for 15 years won't be around.
It seems like the only people who like this are the ones who don't have tickets (and the wonderfully kind folks at the ticket office). I know nothing about how seats are made but I find it hard to believe that they could not find seats somewhere that are the same size as the ones they currently have. I have a real hard time believing this is anything but a money grab.
And not to go all sweet16, but I do know that some of the bigger long-time donors out there are not the least bit happy about this.

Here's the thing - with the bigger cash commitment comes a higher expectation of success.
A lot of the old timers that people like to give crap to are the same people who were at Schmidt and the Gardens during the lean years, and I think those guys have a better appreciation of how hard it is to build something like we have now. There has to be a balance between having the money to compete while remaining loyal to your long-time fan base. I think with this move the administration has dumped on that loyalty.
I have yet to speak to one person who thinks this is a good move.
That's not true. We spoke to Greg Christopher and he thinks it is a fantastic idea.

My family has season tickets in multiple locations ranging from the 3rd row in the lower deck to the middle of the upper deck. I have no issue with having to pick seats again. I'll enjoy Xavier basketball even if i have to slide over a section or up a few rows. Im not there for socializing for 2 hours. Seems too many people are worried about seeing friends and hamming it up(Probably why the lower bowl wasn't even half full for the senior day festivities which was pathetic). I go for the basketball game. If you wanna hang out with your friends have them over on a saturday for an away muskie game. Never understood why it matters who sits by you.

You're right. Xavier doesn't need fans like me, who fell in love with Xavier as a kid watching games at Schmidt Fieldhouse with my Dad. In fact, I think I'll call my Dad right now and suggest to him that we should cancel our trip to the Big East tournament, because Xavier doesn't really need fans like us.
I'll try to be a fan more like you - the kind who complains about the crowds at Xavier games, but doesn't actually go to Xavier games. The kind who weighs in on others' season ticket decisions, but doesn't actually have season tickets herself. Thanks for the pointers on how to become a better fan!

I agree with you. For now on at home games, I'm not going to speak to anyone around me. I'm not going to drink beer before, during or after the game. When the guy next to me wants to talk about the game, I'm going to respond, "Be quiet. I'm concentrating on the game. There may be a big play that I need to cheer for." When my brother comes over to my seat at halftime to talk about the game, I am going to respond, "Be quiet. I need to review the stat sheet so I can be prepared for the second half." You people that I know and run into before the game or at halftime, call me the next day if you want to talk about something.
This is not a time to socialize or enjoy yourself. I'm just going to watch the games and yell at the refs. Anyone who does anything else is not a real fan and is hurting the team.

I said I didn't have season tickets, I do go to games quite a few every season and I don't live close to Cincinnati. Just because you have season tickets, doesn't prevent you from being a lame fan. You might have the money to afford them and that's great, but if you seriously are one to threaten to not renew because x may move you, you really aren't that great of a fan.

I'm there to cheer on my alma mater. However, my desire to be there doesn't come with an open checkbook. The fans the university wants are whoever will pay for season tickets. That might offend some of you who only want fans who yell and cheer like the student section, but at the end of the day, it's all about the jack. The school can't afford to have many of us who are "threatening to not renew", actually not renew. I don't think there's a backlog of people on a waiting list for season tickets. This isn't Green Bay.
It's easy for those of you who don't have season tickets to say you'd renew no matter what. It's not like you're really writing a check for thousands of dollars for the tickets and required donation.

Between seat license, sorry donation, season tickets, all for one gift, concessions at games, the x shirt, misc gift items like the crosstown book, split the pot tickets and all. I'm sorry, but to my taste Xavier has its palm
Our way too much. All they are anymore is money,
Money,

I already feel like I give till it hurts, and all they do is keep wanting more.
Its starting to get off putting quite honestly. I'm at about the 66th percentile in Muskie points. But I don't want to move. I'm already great friends with the folks around me. I've got an aisle and close proximity to restrooms and beer.
But what I can agree on, this losing streak can't me be making life any easier on the sales staff
And every real season ticket holder I have talked to is pissed off about this whole thing.

Asking again ... are you a season ticket holder?
For the most part, I think people will be happy with where they end up. There is hope and expectation this will generate more revenue, but it is not a pure money grab. The leadership at XU is trying to keep Cintas cutting edge with amenities on part with the top tier teams. This means more courtside seats, mini suites, wider seats in the prime locations, more clubs to hang out before and after the game, etc. The problem is that once you replace those first few rows with the extra wide plush seats you have to reset the entire arena. There is no other option to get around the domino effect that would otherwise ensue. The list of pending improvement for cintas is massive and includes virtually everything I have ever read on this board that people complain about. Upgraded wifi, upgraded sound, cup holders on all seats, etc ,etc. They are trying to get the one thing done now that absolutely requires a reseting process and then as finances allow a ton of other really cool stuff is in the pipeline that will make other seats nice and enhance everyone's experience in the entire arena. Recruits see this, coaches see this, our peer institutions see this. The changes lile this help us get better players, keep/get ou r coaches, and increase revenue.
Other Big East schools come to xavier and tour cintas in effort to model what we are doing right now.
I'll be at cintas for every game regardless of what seats I end up with.

We had 5 families (12 seats) meet with an assistant athletic director at Xavier's request. Our concern was to still sit together. Xavier said they have an solution for us. Solution was to donate $30k to ensure we sit together in our current seats. Ridiculous. Only other option is to pick in the position of the lowest point total person in our group. We have a large span of point totals in the group. We have informed Xavier that if we have to move significantly we will all drop our tickets. Their response was "we'll miss you". Zero lotalty. This has the potential to blow up in their face. Hope it's a non-issue, but believe it will be significant.

Here's another perspective.
I've been following XU basketball since the mid 60's and going to games at Schmidt.
Living in South Carolina it doesn't make a lot of sense to own season tickets, which I would if I lived in, or near, Cincinnati.
I'm left with going to as many games as I can get to in Cintas (buying single seats) or in the last league in Charlotte.
So, all I can really do is give as much as possible to AFO and watch on TV, bantering on the board or live chat.
If I had season tickets, and had developed game time friendships with people next to me, I would probably be upset at any change.
But Kim makes good points in that change is necessary to upgrade and move the program forward, with some improved fan experiences.
Perhaps if your seats change you will all develop new game-time friends while keeping the old ones? Don't really know, but it seems likely.
At any rate, you have advantages that many, many Xavier alumni like me, who can't get to games, would love to have.
I would think that would be something worth preserving.
I count myself lucky that we have moved to the BE and so many more games are available to me on the national FS1 channel.
And be happy when it's FSN, that South Carolina stations decide to show the game.
I'm going out on a limb and forecasting the re-work on Cintas will leave most, if not all, people who get season tickets happy.

To expect things will never change and stay the same for eternity is ridiculous. I sit with a group of 10 plus people and we are going to figure it out. Are we thrilled with what X is doing? No. But we also get it and understand why it's happening.

This happened at another place I had season tickets (Marshall football). Some of my friends dropped their seats after being asked to up their already substantial donation to keep the seats they had been in for decades. I understand the reasoning behind the move, but it still sucks for those affected. I'm a cheap seat dweller at Cintas so this doesn't directly impact me, but I would be highly irritated if it did.

I'm moving our six season tickets upstairs. We now sit in rows R and S in section 210 and we're dead on the half-court line. Our seat licenses have doubled since the first year at the Cintas Center and we can't afford it any longer. Luckily, I'm pretty sure that my Musketeer Point Total will allow us to have very good seats upstairs with little, if any, sacrifice of our field of view.
On the subject of Musketeer Points, I got a rundown on my total as of October 1, 2015 but have not received an update on my October 1, 2016 total. The same goes with my points ranking --- I got my 2015 Ranking but it was not listed for 2016. Have any other posters on this site gotten their newer (2016) Musketeer Points Totals and Ranking?

This website shows the points and related percentile to give you an idea of where you stand. Assuming the examples they gave are accurate, it looks like I'll be selecting my seats about the 10th day. I have no idea what that means as to my chances of keeping my seats.

[QUOTE=Xville;582095]Welcome to big time college athletics. The reality is if you don't renew, someone else will buy the seats. Xavier doesn't owe you anything.[/QUOTE
But is there really a huge demand where people are going to get pushed out of their seats?

That's the $64 question. No one really knows. The issue for most people is not knowing if you'll end up being able to improve your seats, stay the same, or not be as good. I think it's safe to say that there isn't a long line of people without season tickets looking to get them. It more a question of who has more points than you who might be able to take the seats you've had for years, resulting in you having to downgrade.

I know we could actually get better seats based on our points. My guess is there isn't going to be as much movement as people are worried about.

I sit up top and buy the cheapest seats in the building. I love my seats. I pay a little over $200 per seat. That is probably going up a bit, but not that much. I take my kids for around $600 a season.
I just wanted to say that I really appreciate all the people that are writing checks for thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars. You guys really fund it all. I just give $600.
And at $200, I am paying around $15 a game. That really is the best sports value in Cincinnati. I am just glad you guys subsidize it.
It is great up top. I think you would adjust to it. And think of all the money you could spend to feed the poor, or even high class hookers. Your money is your own, after all.
Or think about trade offs. Get the cheapo tickets, and then use the extra money to travel to exotic places every year. Man that would be awesome.
I couldn't imagine writing a 30k check for sports tickets, but I wouldn't be able to write a check like that which wouldn't bounce anyway, at least not without getting a divorce. And writing that check only gives you the tickets for a few years, not for life. This proves that.
Its always about the money. That won't change. If I had paid what some of you had already paid every year and was losing my seats and my friends, I would be pissed too.
I don't even sit in my seats. I ride the rail up top and stand all game long. We even have a nice bar up there now, it is quite popular. But I do have friends that I ride the rail with, see them every season, who don't sit in their seats either. I love those guys. We never get together outside of a game, (except if we see each other on road trips, like the Ann Arbor Massacre). You develop a fondness with you kith and kin. These are the people you go into battle with. Together you share "THE THRILL OF VICTORY, AND THE AGONY OF DEFEAT!" And when Tu Holloway goes off against Purdue you end up high fiving and hugging every one of them. You are in this together, and it is a shared experience.
Now if those people get mixed around will everything be the same? No. They will adjust for sure. And you get to meet new people who also have skin in the game. But I get what these people are saying. And I don't pay squat compared to them for my tickets. And if I had their money I would probably go to a different country every year and still keep my cheap tickets.
Sections become small communities, and people adjust to the people around them. I remember when I started yelling JIMMY CARTER at the top of my lungs during quiet moments of the game. The first year or four, it wasn't very popular. For some reason, it didn't catch on much. But over time, well our section tended to like the annual ritual of Dayton, JIMMY CARTER and the underrated "SWEATER VEST". Those were my people, and I was one of them.
The Cintas was so new when we came from the Gardens, and many links had been broken by new seating arrangements. Now it looks like it might happen again. To act like those don't have costs is silly. And the Cintas took a few years to get in rocking shape. The crowds have been much better as the years progressed.
I think some of you blue bloods should protest and move up top, and of course buy me adult beverages with all your newfound bounty. I understand your frustration. I would like however to start a fund so we can pay the money to keep MuskieNick downstairs. Nick thinks he is going to move upstairs and it has no effect, but the family that used to have those seats he is buying are some poor Muslim Mexican Transgenders, and I can't believe he would evict them like some Trumpster. Have you no sense of decency Nick? At long last? Have you no sense of decency?

Uhhh.......yeah if this happens what do you think will happen to the cost of our seats? A big move up top only means that it will force X to raise the price of our seats???? They have to get their money.....and will.

You have assumed inelastic demand, where Snipe is proposing to elasticize it. If people are unwilling to pay, the price comes down. The supply is very inelastic.

True, but it's not sold out with season ticket holders. If some don't renew, it's likely they won't all be replaced with new fans. This could result in a net drop in season ticket holders.

The deportation of season ticket holders is sad!
Seriously though, is it that hard to make new friends? Especially when there is beer and Xavier basketball involved?

It's not hard to make new friends, but the social construct of the season ticket holder sitting with the same people is one of the often referred to intangible benefits of being a season ticket holder. Even Mike Brown gets it. Let that sink in... the Bengals are better at season tickets than the Muskies.

I am still inelastic about the win over Butler.

But factor in the benefit of relief to ticket holders who despise the people around them. Imagine no longer having to be near some Marxist, mouth-breathing, rum-soaked hooligan screaming 'JIMMY CARTER!'.

Does that "social construct" of which you speak, extend to standing by the railing in the rafters?

They put bistro tables up there for us this year! Don't tell anyone. Everyone will start coming up.
If you're "that guy" you are probably unaware that some of your "friends" can't wait to get away from you! :shocked2:

They didn't like me at first. Perhaps some did leave the section. But in the end, they were my people!
I still get people that talk to me about JIMMY CARTER nostalgically. In fact during the last home game X-pectations was talking about how my screams could be heard in the lower bowl and he talked about it approvingly.
AS Khans could attest, I always picked the most silent moments to belch out "JIMMY CARTER!!". Another quote from Khans is that I have no inside voice. I am not sure what he was talking about.

I can't wait till my next visit to Cintas. I'm on the rail with you, for sure.
(I was going to ask if they had beer up there...then realized that would have been the world's dumbest question)
