Gus and Bill on the call. Everyone's gotta step up and do their part. Even with the loss of Ed, main focus has to still be on rebounding. Delgado and company have killed X on the glass the last couple meetings.
Malcolm/Kaiser are gonna have to bring it defensively on Desi Rodriguez or else they're not going to have a chance

Did we miss the trade deadline?
I hope Q is getting his rest. A lot more ball handling for Trevon and (GULP!) JP.

JP or Bernard on the back up duties for PG. Most likely JP.

Just curious... can Stainbrook or one of the walk-ons play point at all? I'm not opposed to having a better ball handler out there for a couple minutes to give someone a breather.
JP just makes too many stupid/inaccurate passes.

Honestly Desi really really torched the 1-3-1 more than anything. Especially with Whitehead gone and Desi likely getting a heavy dose of Malcolm/Kaiser, I'm not as worried about him as I used to be.

The only walk on I would trust on the floor at all is Stainbrook. Fairly certain he plays the 3 though.

I watched Q play through high school at Taylor co. He was by far the best, most athletic player in Ky.(40" vertical) The guy that beat him for Mr Basketball is playing at NKU. Anyway, Q is a big, strong, pass first PG at times who sets up offenses unless he has a mismatch. Im looking for him to have a solid game, considering it's at home and he will be relaxed and not worrying about being pulled for making a mistake. I'm predicting an X win, some really sharp offensive sets with Q as an effective floor general, and nice numbers that will include a nasty dunk.

Completely agree with this assessment. What I've like most about him the last couple games is that he hasn't panicked and shown a lot of composure. Outside of when I think Lovett picked his pocket at half court, he hasn't really made a mistake. And when the 1st look off a set isn't there, he hasn't tried to force it. He's been calm and just moved onto his next progression. That's a really good sign for a point guard. Also love that when he's been getting in the lane, it's been a steady balance of kicking it out or taking it himself. He's taking what they give him.
Having said all that, he'll be matched up with Carrington tonight right? Not an easy one to start with

I'm strangely still optimistic. If things go bad, what's the worse that happens? Q gets some great experience and becomes a much better player because of it? I'm okay with that. I still think we have a decent team, and hopefully they come out with a killer mentality and just go out and win some damn games.

Why not? They all should go out, play hard, and have a blast. Not a lot to lose but everything to gain. With the right matchups a Sweet 16 is highly improbable but not impossible. Yea I'm not ready to give up on these guys either. It's not like our 8 scholarship players are scrubs. Man big Sean needs to settle the hell down though...tripping over his own feet and stuff.

This made me chuckle.. But I do agree, nothing to lose. Go out and play loose. The Shootout mixed with recent events might just be the start of an absolute tear that Trevon goes on. Dude is out to get his and they need him to fulfill all those Paul Pierce comparisons that were being made when he committed

Some thoughts:
-Q: Amazing. He handled the ball beautifully, had some amazing dishes out left and right, and most of all played within himself. Plus that huge block at the end. He's an absolute gamer, and I'm sure this game went a long ways for his confidence. Once he gets his touch going around the rim, watch out.
-O'Mara: When we have this Sean, we're a much different team, he did all the little things right and played some phenomal defense on Delgado. Hell all of our bigs had pretty damn good games.
-Tre: What else is there to say? The guy has a hurt ankle and powers through and still goes off for 24. Ends up making a clutch shot, kid gives us all he's got everytime he's out there.
End of the day, great win for X after Ed's out, should build some confidence and show the guys that they have the ability to still make some noise if they play together. Loved how fluid our offense looked at times out there, and Q is definitely a true point guard. Here's to hoping JP finds his shot, and that we tighten up a few other things, but still very optimistic on the outlook of the season.

I'm surprised Coach Mack didn't call a timeout before that Tre bucket at the end. The last possession T.O. is usually his M.O.

Amidst all the circumstances and turmoil that was a great performance. Tre continued Being Tre. Q continues to step up even though his shots didn't go down (they'll start to). O'Mara played the way we were hoping to see coming into the season. Ditto Gates. (Hopefully they can continue this momentum). JP didn't make too many dumb plays, and a couple great ones. Tyrique went toe to toe with Delgado the first five minutes. I'm not even terribly upset with Gaston's stupid choice. Normally I would be. But if there's a time to go crazy for a teammate, it's the game after your star PG goes out and the team needs to reestablish itself. Great win. Big confidence boost going forward. Now if they can scratch one out in Omaha - look out.

His postgame explanation made sense. Said Willard likes to switch up defenses out of TO's and didn't want to put Goodin in that situation in his first game with a major role. Also liked the matchup Tre had.
I'm a fan of always going w/o the timeout I must say.

Yeah he made a great choice there. Tre was in a good position. We already had the ball in our best players hands in a good spot with a disorganized D.
Only thing thaat would have sucked is on a miss they have the ball with 4 sec to win even with a 2 but Tre had to go there in that spot regardless of it not being last shot.

As they said, his goal would have been to get tre isolated, and they had that. Mack said if he tried to over coach and they came out in a triangle and 2 something else he's cooked. He had his best player with the ball, the D didn't have time to set up and I'm glad it went in! Hindsight declares it brilliant!

What a pleasant surprise.Goodin is going to be great. Omara played his first solid game. They didn't quit .
This is something to build on.
The ball movement was crisp.
We actually ran an offense.
With Ed out elveryone knew they couldn't stand around and wait for Ed to find an opening in the lane.
We may have a TEAM.

I found CM's comments on the radio after the game very interesting. In one of them he stated that much of the time in past games they were running sets for Ed that allowed him have the ball in his hands and have the opportunity to create for other players. I took that mean that he would drive and either take it to the rim or dish. But that now, with Q at point most of the time and others playing it when Q would sit, they were running many other sets. I thought that last night there much less one-on-one play from many of the players and more movement of the ball resulting in open shots, scoring opportunities, and fouls by the opposition. It did seem to me that Gaston was still trying to go one-on-one much to much and just doesn't do that well. I thought that Sean played a much better game and was very surprised when he was taken out with only a couple of minutes left. I'd like to hear CM's reasoning on that, but I'm confident he had a good reason.

And that's what has been so frustrating this year. Ed is an unbelievable talent. But I felt most of the year Chris was torn on how he wanted to use him. Because he's such a good athlete and smart kid, you can do different things with him. But at the same time, he's the point guard so he needs to run the team. Not to mention, if he's going to the League then he had to learn how to run point and play his position. I felt having to do that hurt the offense.
For example, when Crawford was here. Mack would constantly run him along screens on the baseline to free him up and it gave him options with what to do. He was clearly the best athlete and scorer on the team so that's all he had to worry about. Ed has a lot more responsibilities and isn't free to do things like that. If someone like LAJ had still been here and been able to run the point, I think this team would have looked different offensively up to this point. And they would have run more sets instead of iso plays

There definitely appeared to be more going on with the offense last night.

I would imagine that the reason was that Gaston is a much better rebounder and defensive player than Sean. I would agree that Sean worked much better in the offense last night. Gaston was better equipped to battle Delgato on the boards.

Does Q not have an outside shot or is he not supposed to take it? He NEVER looked for his shot outside and I am wondering if that is by design or because he can't hit it reliably. He needs to be able to shoot the 3 at least adequately.

Have you seen how his shot looks? He's actually made the last couple he's taken, but it's definitely not one of the top options in the playbook. He gets maybe 1 inch off the ground when he shoots it. It's not a consistent D1 jump shot. I imagine that'll be one of the biggest things he works on in the off season.

I think he actually has a pretty solid shot, but knows his role in the offense isnt really to be looking for 3s. Which is more than some might say about a few other players on the team.

I think Q wasn't a very good 3 point shooter in high school. I think he's improved, but I still don't think he's going to take them unless the shot clock runs down or he's wide open.

Team battled through and came away with a win. Even though they let Seton Hall back into it, in the end, they had some balls and got the W.
Also liked the guys showing a little swagger out there. Like this play, keep your eyes on The Hair KingTM after passing to Bluiett... no doubt that shot's going in.

I will never understand why X refusss to run a two for one at the end of a half.
Ken Pomeroy looked into the value of two for ones a few years ago. It turns out they really aren't all that valuable. The average gain from running it is about a fifth of a point, which increases odds of winning by less than one percent. Link (http://kenpom.com/blog/investigating-the-value-of-twoforones/)

I'm going to give the "get off my lawn" response to this clip. Kaiser's reaction is fun considering the shot goes in but if Trevon had missed I would have been cursing at the TV that Kaiser didn't crash the boards. My guess is Chris Mack would've had some words for him in the film session as well (and probably did even though the shot went in).

If it was a long rebound that clanged off straight back, Bluiett and Bernard were both already there (Bernard didn't start to walk back until he knew it was going in). Gates was actually in a good place for if it clanged off at an angle.
