View Full Version : Ed Should Sit
I started a thread last week titled : " Maurice Watson, Jr., a Dilemna for the Best" in which I asked the question if it was in Ed's best interest to keep playing wth his shoulder injury.
We now have a new thread : "Ed being Shut Down?"
We started the season with many posters saying Ed was a first round NBA pick leaving at the end of this season. Others have pointed out that he is too one dimensional to go first round and there are several NBA ready point guards ahead of him.
Regardless of which position you take, Ed is not performing well ,he plays in pain, and is not increasing his NBA stock.
I know nothing about the nature of Ed's injury. At this point I do not need to know. I only know that there is no way in hell Ed's continued playing is, at this time, doing anything to help Ed advance his NBA career. It is in Ed's best interest to get well/operated on, rehabilitated, whatever.
As much as we will miss him( even in his incapacitated state) , I would tell him to sit.
I prefer to not make decisions without knowledge. I'll trust Mack, the trainers/doctors, Ed and his family.

Ed's injury is that it is. It's not something that can get worse and it won't get better until he has months to get it fixed. He has two options right now. Shut it down and try and prepare for an NBA training camp(It won't be fixed before the draft). Or play through the pain and finish out the season. If he goes that route I'd have to guess he'd be coming back next year. He played well the 3 games prior to the shoutout with the injury. If he wants to stick it out through the pain then there is zero reason to sit him.

He hasn't been the same since Villanova took him out. He's so thin.

In the 3 games after Nova before the shootout he shot 12-26 for 46 points 15 assists/6 turnovers and 15 rebounds. He was actually slightly better in those 3 games than the rest of his season average.

I suspect we will hear just before tip that he's not playing Sunday @ St. John's. And I suspect that whether formally announced at that time or not, he will have played his last game of the season.
I also think he'll be back next year as a result. Since I know that wasn't his plan, I take no pleasure in saying that.
Get better Ed. You're awesome and your time will come.

This is just such an interesting scenario. From everything I've heard, this is an injury that can be played through. It's very painful at times but can be played through without doing further damage. I'd be surprised to see him shut it down AND come back. I think he either plays through the pain, limiting minutes at times, gets it fixed in the offseason, and returns next year or he shuts it down immediately and leaves for the NBA.

Agree with this. Shutting it down would clearly be a decision to take care of his future earning potential, one that I wouldn't fault Ed for at all. Not sure he would shut it down and then return, but you never know.

This post is giving me deja vu.
We have folks saying : (1) "From everything I've heard, this is an injury that can be played through". Did anyone tell you what the injury is?
Saying an injury can be played through says nothing about whether it is prudent to do it.
(2). "It is not something that can get worse". I do not know if there is such a thing as a shoulder injury that with continued motion/ stress/heavy contact that can not worsen, but I am open to being informed.

There's no doubt that shutting down and getting the surgery out of the way now is a forward-looking decision. But the decision may not be entirely his (at least not if it matters to him WHERE he gets drafted). First, he would have a mixed bag of performance this year. Second, he will be coming off a surgery, and likely would not be able to participate in pre-draft combines, camps, or workouts. Third, he will have missed 1 1/2 of his 3 years of collegiate play. And fourth, this is a pretty stocked draft.
If he shuts it down now, I suspect it's to preserve the possibility of entering the draft this year. But I'm just not convinced that ultimately he will be best situated to do so. And regardless what he may or may not be hearing about those prospects now, I suspect his draft stock will only get worse as the season draws to a close and the annual tourney heroes rise up.

I've been told it is a torn labrum.

Wouldn't just having surgery, getting healthy, lifting weights, and coming back for an impressive year to be drafted early in the first round make more sense than coming out with so many questions? I have no idea. It's an honest question.

What's makes you think he will be an early first round pick next year? It's not so cut and dry that I'd he stays he automatically moves up the board next year.

I wasn't amazed last year by Kris Dunn's play. But he wowed scouts and was a lottery pick.

I get that line of thinking, if you could guarantee it would happen. Would he get bigger next year, even though he didn't this year? Is he going to develop a jump-shot? What if he sustains another injury, more serious? If he really thought he was going pro after this year, and I'm pretty sure he did, why didn't he do all of these things this year (I suspect he tried to effect all of these things, just pointing out that it's unlikely he would be worlds different next year)? Point is, if Ed can make life-changing money this year, I think he has to take it if he wants to.

I hope you're right. My brother in law graduated from EKU and played two seasons in the NFL at the player minimum. After agent fees, relocating, taxes, a house and car etc he has a regular job now. He actually had to go back to school and get his master's. I imagine the NFL and NBA pays young players somewhat similar. I hope if Ed goes, he has staying power, and doesn't get hurt his first year or two. He seems like an awesome kid.

NFL minimum as a rookie is $450K. NBA minimum is $543 this year.

I agree, considering those salaries are before expenses/deductions. Who can blame a young man for taking a shot at his dream though? I've seen mock draft boards having him going late first round early second round before his shoulder injury. It's got to be a tough decision considering it's a high risk high reward either way. If Ed was completely healthy its a no brainer. Now though? Edmon Sumner playing in the NBA would be great for recruiting too.

So with Ed's shoulder being a question mark surgery or not, it doesn't help his draft stock. I cant imagine him being a first rounder unless he continues to play and improves his stock. Has he really shown anything this year that he didn't already show last year? I don't see improved 3 pt shooting and I don't see the pull up jumper from 8-10 feet either. Better passer/facilitator......maybe.

The last time I said Tre wasn't athletic he scored 40 the next game. Maybe I should say something negative about Sean O'Mara

To put a positive spin on this, IF he can come back... labrum didn't appear to be a factor at all today. He was magnificent.
