We all saw Creighton's Maurice Watson, jr. leave the Xavier game with pain in his left knee and then return and damage the same knee and get carried off the court. It turned out he tore his ACL and is done for the season.
His skills made him NBA worthy and it is unknown what effect the injury will have on that career.
The theory goes that the first injury indicated a severe sprain or slight tear that could have been been managed outside of surgery and letting him go back into the game was a major error which doomed Creighton' final four hopes and imperiled Watson's NBA career.
The purpose of this post is not "blame " anybody. For all we know the first injury created a tear requiring surgery.
But I do feel that Division 1 basketball players who are NBA candidates should have some form of special protection ( what that might be is whole different discussion) when injured. The Team medical staff will always err on the side of the team in getting a player back on the court.
You have an unpaid college player, whose lifetime earnings will be highly dependent on an NBA career, and that can be jeopardized for reasons unrelated to those specific interests.
Now, let's bring the discussion closer to home.
Edmond Summer appears to have a chronic injury to his left shoulder which he exposes on his signature drive to the right side of the basket. I know nothing about the nature of this injury. Is it in the ligaments, the muscles, the rotator cuff, a deep bone bruise? I do know that he is conscious of minimizing contact.
If Edmond were your son, what would you advise?
