View Full Version : Uniforms
Watching parts of the Marquette Georgetown game last night. Both have new sharp uniforms, as they seem to have every year. Meanwhile, X who is also a Nike school has the same generic uniforms year after year. Now, before anyone says it, winning is more important than what you wear, but it is curious that some teams are treated much different than others

Xavier's, while they've only undergone slight changes since their introduction in 2010, are actually not generic. X is at the level of Nike deal that they have a customized look -- no one else has the same font or giant X pattern (obviously) on the shorts. Teams like Dayton and Northern Iowa are wearing the generic Nike template this season. GTown and Marquette are Jordan brand, which seemingly (UNC excepted) updates much more frequently and radically.
I believe X is due for a change next season. Not sure they'll go with a complete overhaul, but you'll at least see them with the new Nike cut a lot of teams are wearing this year.

Agreed.. both of those teams just happen to be Jordan brand which is always going to flux. I actually couldn't stand the skinny sleeve ones Marquette was wearing at the beginning of the year. Think all Jordan teams had em. Nova just won a title and I don't think there's are any different. I do like seeing some cool changes, just not sure how many years that takes.
On another note.. someone needs to help Ed on his shoe selection haha. The ones he had on last night were gross

I don't think that has anything to do with it. They're Jordan brand. The shoes and uniforms are completely different than what Duke and Syracuse get. Yes the Jordan brand is related/part of Nike, but they operate as separate entities. Similar examples would be that Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony have shoe deals with Jordan brand while Kyrie Irving and Lebron James have Nike deals.

Cal is also a Jordan brand team.
My guess is Marquette is because of Dwayne Wade. Him and Marquette were originally Converse but Nike got rid of Converse's basketball department and Wade switched to Jordan brand. Around that same time Marquette did as well. Wade has since left for Li Ning but Marquette has remained with Jordan brand.

And now you have Michigan as Jordan Brand in Basketball and Football. Seeing the "Jumpman" logo on football jerseys will always seem weird to me.
There is also some random mid-major that is Jordan. I want to say Oakland?

It has to be so much more comfortable though with less restriction around the shoulder. The other big difference is the length of the shorts. We still have that baggy bullshit which hasn't been in style for years.

Mario Mercurio actually touched on this in a Dana & Victory podcast back in October. I think it was Episode 94 if you're interested in checking it out. To echo what you mentioned, Xavier is the the "NTS Promo" tier for Nike which is the highest tier a school can be in without winning a national championship. The highest tier is reserved for schools who have won a title and is called "Elite" or "Hyper Elite" or some other bullshit marketing term along those lines. Mario did mention that X will be getting new uniforms next year and that they would probably be in the vein of a smaller/sleeker cut as opposed to the parachutes we wear now. It's all based on the movement to have less fabric or material to optimize the aerodynamics. He mentioned that the design itself won't drastically change and whatever the new design is it will be unique to Xavier. Which brings me to my angry white guy rant about our current shorts...
I freaking ABHOR our current shorts. The color is fine. The design is cool. Hell, I don't even care about how they look on our players. It all boils down to how the merchandise wears on a consumer like myself. I'm 5'9" (5'10" in the media guide) and about 180 lbs. I typically wear medium sized gym shorts regardless of the brand. I purchased a pair of medium X replica shorts a couple of years ago and without ever putting them on could tell I'd look like MC Hammer whilst wearing them. So I exchanged for a small thinking those would be more my speed. Wrong! Even the freaking small hangs about 2" below my knee cap and unless you think an early 30's white guy walking around like he's a member of the Fab Five is cool, these things look ridiculous. I literally have had these shorts for over a year and haven't even cut off the tags. I hope next year's model takes my concerns into account. Hopefully Mario read my letter. :rtfm:

Yeah probably. I don't love the look. Looks too similar to a tank top. When the home teams are wearing white looks like they are wearing wifebeaters. But, it's still better than the sleeved Adidas jersey, or the last Reebok jerseys we had in Skip's final year at X.

True, and I always think back to how dumb I thought the original Syracuse/OSU/Florida tight jersey/baggy shorts combo looked, but a few years later it was standard and the old non-fitted jerseys looked horrible (see Dayton's Elite 8 run).

I don't really like a lot of clutter on uniforms though, like those Baylor, UC, etc. adidas jerseys a few years ago that were like neon with the tiger stripes and all that jazz really threw me off, I enjoy the simplicity of our uniforms, I just agree with what everyone says above, that they could fit better (baggy shorts mainly, and I'm only 23) I love our black jerseys though, I know that's always a touchy subject, but the murdered out look is one of my favorites.

Yeah but no one makes jerseys like that anymore, especially Nike. Look at the other Nike schools and how simple the overall designs are. Some of the shorts like UNC or OSU may have a little extra stuff on the sides but everything is very simple.

Yes, I think the only thing I would change is maybe the back design, but I think the font looks great, I love the X on our shorts, the color-ways are great.. minus the grey. I'm still not sold on the grey. But even then, I think if they fix the cut of the shorts, that's all they'd have to do to make me happy.

I'm pretty sure that in order for us to start getting personalized stuff we have to make a final four or win it all (I can't remember which one).
One of those two things gets you into Nike's most elite tier which, outside of being a jordan brand school, is what it takes to start getting personalized stuff.

No I know but Duke gets special shoes more often because Kyrie has a shoe deal with them, as does Durant and Texas. Jordan brand gives cool shoes to all of their teams but they give extra and better shit to UNC. My sarcastic point was just that it's easier to get cool stuff when you have a big time alumnus in the league with a deal with Nike.

Agree with this. Think they could wear em twice a year. Once in non conference and once in conference. I loved that they randomly pulled them out for Butler cause it was a big game they needed. Obviously they still lost, but I like having em in their back pocket as an extra boost. Also would not move the logo from the thigh to the knee. That's my favorite part lol. The lighter blue uniforms stand out so much better. If fans wore that blue it would make the arena look much more colorful. Instead if you look around you can't even tell what our colors are. It just looks like a bunch of people in the stands wearing whatever they want. light blue stands out but dark blue doesn't. I make the runningman logo much bigger, change the font and the curvature of Xavier and they would badass and something I want to see all the time.

I really like the old blue, but I prefer to keep the current navy as our primary blue. I could see the throwback blue being a subtle accent color, but not a shift to it as the primary blue.
That said, I would definitely like to see more of the runningman logo. (You know that was designed by a local guy, Dick Keller.)

The only issue I see with mixing the old blue (I'm assuming you mean the baby blue/UNC like blue) and navy is that it's the exact same color scheme as Villanova.

Yeah, good point. I don't think Nova's navy is as deep as ours, but not sure. I think the light blue could look sharp as an accent on black, or very subtle on the standard home/aways, maybe just piping or stitching.

Nice, thanks for the link.
Running Man long-sleeve warmup available at the bookstore.
When I saw it on the bookstore site, I just clicked "purchase" with zero hesitation.
I was the JP Macura of Running Man shooting shirt purchasing.

Already sold out of Large and XL online...
I bought mine today at the bookstore and they were out of Large, and the rest of the sizes were going quick. I bought the last 4XL.

They run big. I probably could have gotten the 3XL.

Didn't have XSmall. He'll grow into it quickly enough. He should be hitting a growth spurt any time now. Thanks for info though. I showed my wife and she said, "are there any that say Xavier on them? He's getting ready to out grow the one he has that says Xavier on the front." I said, "it's the vintage Running Man logo, woman. Buy it!!"

I was there at 5 PM yesterday and got mine. They still had plenty of all sizes when I left. There were at least two other people in there buying one as well (when I was there).

One would hope that sort of demand would generate a much wider selection of merchandise.

Just called. No sizes left except small. Lady on the phone didn't seem too confident in her answer, but said there was no guarantee there would be another shipment.
Damnit.

I'll be sporting mine in Orlando. It can be chilly in the mornings - like low 50s. Brrrr.

Yeah, that's quite an assumption with Xavier's bookstore.

Ranking every NCAA tournament team’s uniforms (http://www.foxsports.com/college-basketball/gallery/ranking-every-ncaa-tournament-teams-uniforms-031417)
Bringing up the rear:
68 Dayton (http://b.fssta.com/uploads/2017/03/dayton.vadapt.767.high.0.jpg)
Gradient and color-on-color. You're better than this, Dayton. (I imagine that's what Archie Miller is worried about here.)
The thing is, though... they aren't better than that.
Just missing the top 10:
12 Xavier (http://b.fssta.com/uploads/2017/03/xavier.vadapt.767.high.0.jpg)
Uber cool.
Perfect! Did you guys know Matt Stainbrook once drove for Uber?
Leading the pack:
1 Villanova (http://b.fssta.com/uploads/2017/03/nova.vadapt.767.high.0.jpg)
The gold standard for modern uniforms.
I can't disagree that Nova's jerseys are SO CLEAN, but it's just unfortunate that X's throwbacks aren't in consideration. It would honestly be unfair to all other jerseys to rate them against these... pure fire:

Great photo. Love how, for obvious reasons, O'Mara isn't sporting the white tights.

They are updated or modified versions of this year's Durant shoes. A lot of our guys were already wearing the normal Durant model. I don't think there are any real differences other than aesthetics. It's got both flyknit and full length zoom cushioning.
Some of the other guys did get the new Paul George shoes and others got the updated Kobe, which I heard sucks.

Yeah, Mario Mercurio has indicated that Xavier's uniforms will be re-designed for next season. We have had our current design since 2010, so we are due. Really looking forward to what we come out with.

I would say a bit snug. I'm a L in pretty much everything and it definitely still fits, but it's a smidge tight. I'll mainly use it for working out but if I would have wanted to wear it casually or out, I might have gone for the XL.
