My hope, and guess, is that tomorrow versus Mizzou we won't be all that tested. Hopefully that gives Mack an opportunity to play more of an 8 or 9 man rotation and keep Sumner, JP, & Tre relatively fresh for Friday's game. We'll most likely face Clemson on Friday and if so they will present a challenge that will probably require the big 3 to play a huge share of minutes (35 range) in order to win. The depth issue will probably be really stressed in that third game and I'd imagine you'll see the fatigue catch up to us to at least some extent. I keep reading differing reports regarding the availability of Gates in this tournament but even if available I'd imagine his minutes will be minimal. I'm operating under the presumption that he won't play.

I was reading about the Tigers last night.

It sounds like their older players are not high level D1 players, while the younger guys are quite impressive, but freshmen nonetheless. They were picked dead last in the SEC preseason, but two of the freshmen have really impressed in the first two games which could surprise some.

XU likely gets tested by some strong young players, but ultimately wears them down.

LOL Duke only played 6 guys because their 3 All-American Freshman all happen to currently be hurt. That wasn't what they'll normally run. And yes, Kansas plays 8 guys. To be fair to xavierj, Duke typically goes with a pretty tight rotation. No question if you have the talent you can win with a 7 man rotation in March, the problem is getting all 7 of those guys there without wearing them down in the regular season.

My second team is Mizzou so I would like to think I know a little bit about them. It is hard to tell from their first game (it was against Alabama A&M after all). However, it looks like Frankie Hughes, a 6-3 freshman guard is going to be a player. He may give X some trouble today especially with the fact that we X is not the best defensively. The good thing for X is that Mizzou does not have anyone really worth mentioning on the interior, so the game should go more like the Buffalo game than the Lehigh game unless Hughes and Willie Jackson (swingman) go off.

As far as the interior goes, Puryear is an undersized forward that works extremely hard and has a good motor, but doesn't have much athleticism or skill to exploit X. With the way he plays though, he would be a favorite among the X faithful if he suited up for us.

Lastly, Terrence Phillips is a small but quick point guard that could give Sumner some trouble defensively....anyways those are the players for Mizzou that is worth mentioning. Though Mizzou's program seems to finally be pointing in the right direction, they are still a year or two away from competing with top 25 teams...should be a 15-20 point win unless X plays like poo.

I think the real problem is that we are missing 1 if not 2 starters and 1 of them is a front court player where we are just not very good right now. Losing Farr and Reynolds really hurts especially since Gates is also out. Gaston looks very Norfolk Statey, and Tyrique is going to be up and down all year.

Puryear is making our team look very foolish right now. The guy has a motor and is using it against our slow to react front court. Not even thru the first half though and I think we will be fine for this game. I worry about Big East play but at least we will have Gates by then.

Honestly....when has a Mack coached Xavier team looked good on defense? I think at best we have had average defense teams since he took the helm. I don't mean that as a knock really against Mack...just saying it is what it is. I think he recruits strong offensive players rather than focusing on defense.

Definitely a combo. It's a long season, and there's a lot to be figured out with this team. Personally, I'm glad X is figuring it out with a known trio that is pretty good. Others will step up, but it's not going to be pretty early.

He's usually good for taking over a half, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him score around 12-20 in the second half...

I like O'Mara but he's limited athletically and that's not going to change. We really need him to rebound the ball well this year. I like his low post moves, too. Hopefully his defense will improve with more playing time.

I agree with your agreement, but we also should have had more time on the clock based on when JP called the timeout. I think that definitely would have an affect on how we choose to play that inbounds. Whatever... got the W. 3-0!

O'Mara missed a couple of shots that were right there. He didn't work for position to take advantage of his size and skills on a couple other plays.

Despite this lack of good play, I think Sumner needs to continue to be looking at him for a first option on more possessions.

Firstly, he needs the touches to work it out and know that he's the one down there the team needs. Secondly, if we aren't going there more than is happening now, we're missing the opportunity to make the other team's defense work down low, opening up the outside.

I know we had a cold night shooting, but honestly our 3 point attempts weren't as open as they could have been always. That changes if we continue to feed the bigs.

Yes, the first few games there have been way too many inside misses. Even on some where the bigs are drawing fouls, they still HAVE to make those shots.

My second team is Mizzou so I would like to think I know a little bit about them. It is hard to tell from their first game (it was against Alabama A&M after all). However, it looks like Frankie Hughes, a 6-3 freshman guard is going to be a player. He may give X some trouble today especially with the fact that we X is not the best defensively. The good thing for X is that Mizzou does not have anyone really worth mentioning on the interior, so the game should go more like the Buffalo game than the Lehigh game unless Hughes and Willie Jackson (swingman) go off.

As far as the interior goes, Puryear is an undersized forward that works extremely hard and has a good motor, but doesn't have much athleticism or skill to exploit X. With the way he plays though, he would be a favorite among the X faithful if he suited up for us.

Lastly, Terrence Phillips is a small but quick point guard that could give Sumner some trouble defensively....anyways those are the players for Mizzou that is worth mentioning. Though Mizzou's program seems to finally be pointing in the right direction, they are still a year or two away from competing with top 25 teams...should be a 15-20 point win unless X plays like poo.
