I think I've lost about $60k in about a week or so. Now I know some of that could potentially rebound because the market ebbs and flows over time, and I also know that to some people on there that may not seem like a whole lot, but to me it's no small amount. The leader of our country has declared bankruptcy nine times and I'm starting to hear from people who are suspicious and are saying things like what he's really trying to do is drive the dollar down so he can personally borrow more money at a lower interest rate. Now I don't know exactly what that means, but when a person is suddenly losing a lot of money they're going to become more and more skeptical about EVERYTHING. I guess that's me right now.
What is the point of these tariffs and will they realistically actually work??
I'm not asking for people to sound off on Trump and for others to respond by sounding off on woke. I just want to know what the ultimate end goal here is and whether or not this will actually make things better in the long run. If it doesn't, I don't see why ANYONE would want this guy to remain in office for another day unless they are just completely brainwashed. That's the kind of thing that happens to people that get sucked into cults. They give all their money to it and continue to think it's this great and wonderful thing.
It’s all a bunch of hope. That’s literally all it is. Hope that other countries will just drop their tariffs and then we will do the same. Hope that this means the American public will just start buying American products. Hope that companies will start manufacturing here instead of on foreign lands and do it immediately.
This is the idea. Maybe we will start seeing some roi on it in 20 years after a nice big recession. Should we really trust someone with financial sense that’s literally bankrupted a casino?

MID: The "generation of leeches" that you describe did the following:
1. fought in the Vietnam war with over 59K killed, hundreds of thousands wounded
2. passed federal legislation establishing funding for the EPA (clean water), Medicaid for the poorest citizens and NAFTA with its faults!
3. improved services for veterans and Native Americans
4. evaluated scientific evidence of climate change and chose to try and alleviate its' planet-wide problems
5. dramatically changed viewpoints on women so they are now in the work force in senior/leadership positions in the armed forces, for profit and non-profit entities
So, ya whine all you want about "leeches." Your generation (which ever one is yours) will have its chance.
You lost me at climate change which is not real from a human made standpoint.

Blind leading the blind. Incredibly shallow analysis. i hope Brew does a little more digging...
Okay, what have you dug up? I’m listening. Am I and everyone else going to recoup our losses before this is all over???
Not that this shocks anyone, but this has absolutely no substance at all.

He won’t say because what I posted is 100% what the hope is. It’s all hopes and prayers. Our economy was in a great spot months ago, but lead it to trump to fuck it up and act like he’s fixing things. Yeah we have a massive deficit, his answer to that are tariffs and using them to pay for the tax cuts. Genius. I’m sure with all the doge operations we will see a balanced budget in no time. Not going to hold my breath.

What's UofL's NIL, Mr. Expert? Were you lying, when you tried to infer that you know Josh Heird so well that he let you in on what the number was? Funny thing, you didn't give that key piece of info away, did you?
Oh yea, did you think I forgot about your UCLA claim? Let me guess, ole Mickey has kids that go to the same school as your kids, and he whispered in your ear that they just don't have the best NIL support.
LOL! What a fucking fraud.

Okay, good idea. Don’t waste your time. Don’t waste anyone else’s either. Just shut the hell up. If you do that then you’ll make this small part of the world just a little better.
When I initially asked for an assessment of what the plan was, I specially said I didn’t want people to just trash Trump in their answers. What I’d really like (if there is one) is some explanation on how this will work in the long run.

You’re not shutting up and are still wasting your time. Just don’t even post or read the messages board. It’s a waste of time to engage in any sort of discussion. People should just do their own research and keep it all to themselves. Why do you keep wasting yours and everyone else’s time? You yourself said you didn’t want to do that. Just leave!

I think the Tariffs will have some basic advantages:
1. Many countries send tens of billions of product to the US every year. If we average 10 to 20 percent on this I believe its easily 150 million. I really haven't done the numbers, but it's a lot.
2. Rather than paying a tariff some companies will just manufacture here instead. Obviously that is what is preferred especially for critical items. There have already been numerous companies that have said they are committing to building here because of the tariffs.
The stock market will bounce back. No one that is selling now is getting out forever, they are just trying to take advantage of the situation. If it drops a little they get back in cheaper and pocket some money.

Everything im reading says to expect another 20% decrease so I dunno how positive I can be regarding the stock market right now.
As far as your answers. I agree with number 1 but also don’t know the numbers. The question is, what will be done with that money? In other words, why trust trump with anything?
As far as your second point, yes as I said before that’s the hope. Two issues: 1.) time of actual roi on that and 2.) sure some companies may do that. Is it enough to overcome the issues that this has now caused? Trade wars historically don’t end well.

I'm not young. I've watched administration after administration take turns fucking the American people. So why trust Trump? I don't. I have plenty of experience as to why not to. But compared to the previous administration, I'll take Trump every time. And so far he seems to be doing what he said he would do. That's unusual. What are those?... Drain the swamp and close the borders. Two things I wholeheartedly support.
As to where the Tariff money will go, I suppose it would go to the treasury. But I could give them my routing number if that works for you.

Curious to know what you think the swamp is and what exactly he drained of it? Most important thing to me is my family, and with that their financial future and our situation. What Trump has done so far in this term is completely fuck that up, and it's only going to get worse at the very least in the short term. While the other candidate was fucking horrible as well, this second term isn't starting out so hot in my eyes either.

Why do people excuse Trump's actions by saying the other candidate was worse?
What about Harris was worse...other than she was a Democrat. What shortcomings in her record make you think she was "worse"?
Take responsibility for putting this guy in office. Don't be like other R's who won't accept responsibility.
Even smart people like billionaire Ackman realize they made a mistake. I don't think Harris would be tanking the market.

The swamp is USAID, DoE, etc. The bureaucracy that spends money in ridiculous ways all the while the country is in deep debt. If you're worried about your children, you're fooling yourself if you think this debt climb is sustainable. The interest on the debt is equal to military spending.
Now, there is one way that debt could be wiped away. ...Print 36 trillion dollars. Rough math that's what about 100K for each person? How big is your household? 4 or 5 hundred K for your house? What happens to your childrens future then?
The money has been wasted and stolen. Gone. Stolen from you, and me, and everyone else here. You can be outraged at me for that, but I didn't get any of it, nor did I vote for it.

ok fair points. I think all of us would agree there has been plenty of wasteful spending by our government for decades. I'm just not naive enough to believe that the country is going to save all this money. Lobbyists still run this country and they have the politicians bought and paid for on both sides of the aisle.
I think there are probably better ways to take care of our debt than starting a trade war and crippling the economy.

I didn't want to vote for either of Trump or Harris in the general election. I'd have preferred Desantis or Haley or for the Democrats to have actually held a process that involved voters to select a candidate that people didn't hate. I voted for Trump because he was the least bad option from my POV.
As for Republicans not calling out Trump, you'd have to have slept through the last 10 years to wonder about this. "Mainstream" Republicans have tried many times to challenge/call out/get rid of Trump. Every time they do, they get slaughtered. Even someone as popular as Ron Desantis essentially got neutered when he challenged Trump directly. Am I happy about that dynamic? Of course not. But other than becoming Democrats or completely ceding power to the Democrats, the Republicans at this point don't really have a choice but to go along with Trump.
Do I think this administration is going well? Not really, but I didn't really expect it to. I HOPED it would go better. I think they're doing some things I like. I appreciate the improvements at the border and on immigration. I like the efforts on cutting government spending. I like the idea of re-shoring jobs. Of course, none of those things are being done in a way that is exactly ideal. I don't love losing 10-15% (maybe 20, 25, 30 percent by the time we're done) of my 401(k), but I've seen market downturns before, and I'm sure it will be fine in a few years.
So I don't love it. But the modern, progressive Democratic party does nothing for me, and their vision for the country doesn't give me warm fuzzies for my children. So here we are.

America is the great capitalist society. We are the financial engine of the world. Given our wealth there is no reason we should be in the situation we are. But here we are.
Who carries our debt? If the debt is to ourselves, then it's easy, it just gets forgiven. It's just on paper. But if it's held by a foreign entity, then I predict war with that entity.
Enjoy what we have now, because it ain't lasting. The damage has been done.
Also, the deep fakes will soon get so deep no one will know the truth.

No doubt there is a lot of waste in the government, probably like most large organizations. And it's good to root it out and be more efficient with your resources.
How USAID got caught up in that I'm really not sure. They do (did?) great work around the world, responsible for saving millions of lives with famine relief and medical assistance like GW Bush's Pepfar for AIDS cures.
It is (was?) a great soft power exercise that helped American influence for the good around the world. Now China will fill that void.

No Paul other organizations don't do what our federal government has done. Other organizations go bankrupt. The federal government has FLEECED the American people. 36 trillion Paul. That's a good point about other organizations going bankrupt.
But that really has nothing to do with the minuscule spending of USAID (the majority going to American companies for supplies, medicine, etc) and the good it has done for our country around the world.
It's the baby with the bath water, and I'm loath to let the Chinese replace us as the better influence around the globe.
