Wow - 7 Big East teams in the top 50. This will be a fun year for the league!

So I have to ask. Kenpom uses advanced metrics to do his rankings which are very good. How can he have rankings though before games are played? I'm asking out of curiosity here.

Just a preseason weight so that early season fluctuations aren't too pronounced. The weight diminishes over the course of the season until he drops it entirely some time in December or January when there are enough games already played.

We used to complain about this when we were in the A-10 because we would never get beginning Fred and it was hard to claw back in.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but that preseason weight is based on last year's performance by players transferring over. In such, it does not include new players (i.e. Goodin). It also (obviously) would not reflect any presumed improvements or regressions by certain players.

As mentioned, they are phased out so that the season stands on its own by December or January.

He's altered it several times. He changed it again this year. He now factors in transfers that will be eligible to play. He also seems to vary how quickly he phases out his preseason rankings and phases in his full blown "this year" rankings.

The 2017 ranking removes any players who transferred out (LAJ, Makinde) and factors in the transfers we got (Bernard, Gaston.) It has not always factored in transfers but it does this year. Im not really sure how it factors in improvements, if at all. Generally, only top 30 freshman are factored into the ranking, but since we had 2 players leave the system does something weird where it assumes our freshman will be a step up from the players who transfered? I dont totally understand this but you can read more about it here: http://kenpom.com/blog/preseason-ratings-now-with-transfers/

Finally, Myles will be included in our ranking, which is to say it may be a bit inflated until he comes back.

Heres a little more info on what goes into the rankings for those interest. Ignore the part about transfers, they weren't included in 2016 but now are. http://kenpom.com/blog/2016-preseason-ratings/
