The Orlando tourney could be a little rough with 8 guys. 8 guys and Tim Stainbrook.
Thank gosh for Malcolm Bernard.

Player injury is to be expected every year, I just hope that Gate's recovery will be quick and complete. We badly need him in our lineup. I expect him to have a hugh season.
If it has to happen, I'm glad it's now and not down the road when we'll really need him. Get well soon!!!

Things have definitely seemed to pile on this offseason, but I feel like it's hard not to be optimistic long-term this season because 1) unexpected surprises/injuries aside, X should be full go the second (more important) half of the season and 2) X is still running out the Sumner/Bluiett/Macura trio every night.

He is?
The hit he took last year would have knocked anyone out.

You never want to start the year recovering from an injury. It's tough to catch up, and invariably you come back too soon.
Gates is young enough, this is a minor procedure, and he will recover far sooner than athletes a few years older. I just hope he is back before we need him to be.

tough start to the year with the injury, but hopefully he gets back without any lingering issues. Will hurt our Orlando tourney chances without him.

We will just have to play Ironman - same guys on both offense and defense.

If being the target of attempted murder is prone to injury, then yes.
Get well, Kaiser. Take care of that knee...and hair.

I'm usually pretty optimistic at the beginning of a season, but news like this tends to make me less so. We've seen this happen to other players early in the year and it's never been a good thing. I can't remember the last PLAYER that suffered an injury like this early in the year and returned to full form later in the year. At a minimum, he will lose conditioning, quickness, and explosive jumping abilities until later in the year. In addition, the added minutes that others will play to make up for his absence will leave them more open to fatigue and possible injury. Lack of bodies also makes it harder to practice at the level the others need to get ready for the season. The only saving grace is the timing, in that this is not a mid-season injury. Perhaps by the first of the year, baring no further injuries, setbacks, or other personal problems, the team may be at full strength. But the chances are razor thin at this point, as is the roster. All they can do is continue on and hope for the best...as we must do also. Good luck Mr. Gates and hope you heal quickly.

I feel bad for Kaiser...this kinda sucks but hopefully he comes back from this ok this season. I know we still have sumner, tre and jp but even with that, my expectations for this season are lower than what they were when last season ended. It's just been a pretty brutal off season.I'm sure these guys will come together and prove me wrong, but I'm just not expecting the kind of year that our preseason ranking represents.

Sucks, but the positive spin is that other guys will get more time and experience like Tyrique and Malcom.

Wrong. When Chalmers broke his foot the added minutes and experience for others helped us down the stretch.

Yeah, particularly since Kaiser is the key component to roster versatility, especially with the small-ball lineup. He can defend pretty much any position except maybe the 5 (and could probably do spot duty there too), and he can shoot it from deep, which is something you want at the 3 and something great to have at the 4.

This is going to make practices less competitive too.

How competitive are practices during the season? I literally have no idea. Are they going pretty hard in drils and scrimmages during the week or is more instructional with some of that mixed in? Usually playing 2 games a week my thought would be the latter but I am positive someone on here knows for sure and I'd love to hear.

Even if in-season practices are not as competitive (and that's probably somewhat true other than over Christmas break), you can bet they're getting the hell after each other right now. And we're missing Kaiser for that.

Yeah, true.
My question was more of curiosity than any real commentary on how much we will miss Kaiser. I definitely am with others and know what a negative it is at this time.

No doubt not having him hurts........we are so thin it's scary this year. The only positive spin is that it will get some of the newcomers some minutes the first 4-5 games that they normally might not have seen. Maybe that pays off later in the year....

The lack of depth early this year will give guys like Goodin and Jones lots of court time early in their freshmen year, which will be key in helping them lead the 2017-2018 Muskies to their second straight Final Four! (See what I did there)
Okay that's a super optimistic look at this. Hoping Kaiser is back and healthy soon!

Goodin was going to get plenty of playing time this year anyway, and Kaiser not playing minutes @ the 3/4 does not have a lot of impact on Goodin at the 1.
In theory it could provide some minutes for Jones, but indications are likely that he won't play much anyway. Probably means more minutes for guys that were already going to play a decent chunk of minutes.

Malcolm Bernard is likely going to be a starter for Xavier until Myles is reinstated. I would expect Kaiser Gates to be back for the Orlando tournament. When Xavier announces injury time lines they generally overshoot if they have concrete answers. Insiders seem to think he will be out a max of three weeks; essentially two weeks now.
I just found out that Bernard is a lefty. Might have a new favorite player.

Malcolm has apparently looked very good in practice and is a good with a high steal rate. I'd be surprised if he doesn't start.
As for Kaiser, I don't really expect to see him until the Northern Iowa game. He may be able to play by Orlando, but he hasn't really practiced with the team and is probably a step behind everyone else. I think they'll play it safe and keep him out of the tourney, give him that following week to practice and get reacquainted with everything, then come off the bench vs UNI.

No knock against Goodin at all but Malcolm is a legitimate D1 player with numbers to go with it. Maybe later in the year but for now I like Goodin coming off the bench and getting used to high level basketball. X has a lot of options in the backcourt even still, as long as everyone stays healthy. Just gotta stay healthy.

Also, the coaching staff typically only has Freshman learn one position, so I would guess Goodin is only learning to be back-up PG behind Sumner.

That's a really good combination to sub in and out for each other. Gates has good size and shooting, and Bernard has nice ball handling and athleticism. Both can fill up the stat sheet.

I don't think they will actually sub for each other much. Simply Bernard starting in his place as they will go smaller until he returns. Once Gates is back, Bernard will take some minutes when JP/Tre need breathers

Yeah I think it's more the combination of Myles and Gates both being unavailable and having to switch things up a bit lineup-wise.

Hope everyone understands that when he does come back we shouldn't expect him to be in mid season form. There is going to be some rust and some mental hurdles to clear before he's back to full strength. I don't think we will see the real Mr. gates until after the 1st of the year, but I wouldn't mind being wrong on that either.

I absolutely agree with this... The thing we could use from Gates is that defense even if in small spells.
I have always been impressed with his defensive footwork and think he could contribute some early especially if/when we struggle defensively.

Last year, I never expected a shot of his to go down, but I always assumed he would be in the right spot defensively. His ability to guard 2-4 (in a pinch, 1-5), is exactly what we need until Myles comes back, if ever.

Yes, he was in the stands, sitting in the front row, with a group of other players, sitting next to Sean O'Mara, watching the FIRST GAME. and he had an ice bag on his knee.
He came out with the team for our game, THE SECOND GAME, and was with the team throughout the game.

I love reading Shannon's quote "full go". I'm sure it will take a couple weeks to get his cardio in good shape but his style of play is so controlled and smooth, I don't think it will be a problem for him at 4-5 minute spurts. Great, great news. This kid is big time and was a nice player as a freshman. Imo he completes this team as a final 4 contender, and if Myles comes back, he's the icing on the cake.
