The Curious Case of Kaiser Gates - HoopThink (http://hoopthink.com/index.php/2016/09/21/the-curious-case-of-kaiser-gates/)
Interesting read on Gates. The author seems higher on him than I think a lot of our fan base is.

We should be high on Kaiser. CMack continually said last year that Kaiser was always the best shooter on the team. Last year he was a freshman. He'll be more confident and comfortable this year.
I remember all the naysayers about Myles after his freshman year...then Sophomore year happened....
Imagine, analysis with illustrative vid clips.
Much more of this, much less of political wallpaper. Please?

I think that Gates will be a much better player this year, and a much larger part of the success this team enjoys.....at least I hope so.

I totally agree. He has a huge upside, and the typical Fr to So jump means he will be a MAJOR contributor this season.

I think he has a chance to be named defensive Player of the Year in the Big East if he makes even a smallish quality jump from Fr to So. He really reminds me of a James Posey type of player!

I am HUGE KG fan. Expecting big things this year. I thought Mack brought him along in just the right way and he had to get comfortable in the system and mostly his positioning on both offense and defense. Kid has a GREAT attitude and wanted to learn. I think Mack turns him loose this year.

I also believe KG will be a big contributor this year. Could be the surprise rising star in the BE this year.
Big Kaiser Gates fan here. I know he worked hard this summer, and look forward to seeing the fruits of his labors.
Kaiser was the surprise player of the year last year for me. I expected a lot from some other guys who played great, but I never expected what we saw from Kaiser. Really looking forward to more from him this year.

He won the offseason training belt. Doesn't necessarily mean anything but the year before Farr won it.

I like that the writer pointed out that the most effective lineup variation would be for Gates to be at the 4 while Tre would slide to his most natural position the 3. This is something I have been saying since the offseason started....it allows for much better defense, and still allows Xavier to spread the floor on the offensive end. Gates is arguably our best returning defender, and should be out on the floor 25+ minutes per game this coming year.

Absolutely. And with any potential Myles absence, being able to have him in and one less guard could be essential. I'm interested to see if that lineup could run an effective 1-3-1.

I feel the same way, but I also am expecting great play out of O'Mara. Solid, tough athlete with good skills.
Overall, I believe we're going to be solid. I see Myles coming back - - soon. And I see Chris Mack weaving his magic with this edition of Xavier basketball.

I felt Sean O'Mara had the best interior moves on the team last year. (Something Jalen never seemed to make any progress with.) If Sean can control the fouls this is going to be fun to watch, this guy is solid inside. Solid offensive moves and people also bounce of him. I like the football background. Not as versatile as Gates, but fills a key role. I'm getting excited...

Exactly the way I'm looking at it.
I'll never figure out Jalen in that regard. You're spot on about that. It's as though Jimmy's wonderful development over the course of last season sucked some confidence out of him or something. Who knows why he couldn't take that freakish athleticism to the next level.
I love Sean's football background, too. His interior moves are strong and athletic. As far as fouling goes, we'll just have to count on the notion of added experience helping him to stay on the floor longer from here on in.

I think it's XUFan09 who has the statistics but O'Mara was our most efficient offensive big last year over Reynolds and Farr.

Farr actually had a better offensive rating, but O'Mara's effective field goal percentage and true shooting percentage were both easily better than Farr's and Reynolds'. What pulled him down was his turnover rate (20%). More regular minutes and another year of experience should temper that, I believe.*
* Someone might bring up Kenny Frease's TO rate spike his senior year as a counterexample to this, but the important factor there was the new double teams that Frease was getting that season, leading to a large chunk of his turnovers early in the season.

Stats man, I wouldn't bet against you!
Ugh, I see he posted right before me, but I'm too tired for math! :-)

yeah it was pretty clear to see even without the statistics how efficient omara was in the post. When he was 1 on 1 in the post he almost always was able to back in for a close shot and usually converted. I still think he will struggle with turnovers this season though.

Yes.
I'm a little worried about foul trouble with O'Mara, but I think he has plenty of upside ahead of him.

Well said. Wait did I write this. No? Well it feels like something I'd want to write.
