A great Xavier Man passed away this weekend. Former Xavier SID and Former Houston Oilers PR Director, Jack Cherry.
Jack was also known on the various message boards over the years as WiseXUOwl and more recently here Always Learning.
Jack was a tremendous help to me when I was at XU as Golf Team Captain. His advice and counsel on various things to make sure that we stayed in line with different things was invaluable and appreciated. We stayed in touch over the years despite his being miles away in Houston. He was a Xavier classmate of our own WKRQ and sent a wonderful, hilarious dissertation that we read at Q's induction to the Lew Hirt Society. If you wanted a rollicking story about how College Sports used to be, with names named and no details left out, Jack was your guy. One of his hopes last year was that he would be able to experience a Xavier Final Four in Houston, and he was going to set up an all star golf foursome. Too bad we didn't make it.

I know that many of you have no idea who Jack Cherry was, but trust me, you would have loved him if you did.

Rest in Peace Jack, and keep Repping Xavier up there at the Paradise Country Club.

Never met him in person, but I am definitely familiar with the postings of wisexuowl dating back to Musketeer Madness.

To Jack - hope that Skip, Fr. Hoff and the McCormick brothers will have a few cold ones in your honor.

RIP, have to respect anyone who goes by "Always Learning". That says something.

He was. Once watched him try to "cover" Danny Abromowitz during a photo shoot on Corcoran Field. Then Stofko.

Did he go to Houston with Ed Biles?

Yes he did. He and Eddy Biles were very close. When Father Mulligan started to try to dismantle the athletic program at XU, Jack saw the handwriting on the wall and Ed gave him a place to land. Helped his career, although he hated moving from Cincinnati.

Very sorry to hear this.

I remember Always Learning showing up on the board and thought he was great for long form posts.

Was not aware of his back story.

RIP, peace and prayers to Jack's family.

Great man..was the SID in my 4 years of basketball at XU. In my time at XU did a lot for me and the other b-ball players. Always made it a point to send articles back to our local newspapers in Schenectady, NY.
We always called Jack one of the four horsemen (Coach Mac, Ruby, Ray Baldwin( trainer ) and Jack). They always were together especially when we were on the road. And those stories at another time.
I remained in touch with Jack throughout the years and spoke to him as recently this past Christmas. He was a true Xavier man and loyal to Xavier till the end. He will be missed.

Was a tireless worker even when XU had limited resources. A round of golf w/ Jack & Ray Baldwin is unforgettable. RIP.
