Why the change? Is that a bigger, better gig? Obviously a lot of Georgia Tech supporters here in Atlanta, but not so much for the sports programs (and virtually NONE for hoops). Few people here know he was in town.

Don't know why, but I've always instinctively considered Purdue to have the worst athletic program in the Big 10. Facilities are outdated. Doesn't have the charm of athletically worse Big 10 schools like Northwestern and Minnesota. Everything about Purdue seems second rate.

But still, big picture, not an awful job. Maybe a step up from GTECH???

High pay and low expectations. That's the perfect combo for a job!

Apparently he was not very well liked at GT - http://www.myajc.com/news/sports/college/georgia-tech-was-dysfunction-junction-under-bobins/nsCmC/

He hired Josh Pastner...so his tenure at Tech IS pretty hard to defend. Jesus.

That certainly doesn't sound like our Mike Bobinski.

It will be interesting to see how he does at Purdue. If he does well at Akron, Xavier and Purdue but had issues at Tech, then it may point towards the tech administration.

Didn't he have financial constraints? Still carrying some bad contracts, etc. I know the hoops arena was re-done a few years ago, but still nothing special.

I think they are still paying Hewitt, Gregory, and now Pastner.

I read that blog, the guy actually defends Gregory a bit. We all know from experience that Gregory is overrated. I bet Bobo was just waiting to fire that guy, but the Pastner hire is strange.

Purdue has rebuilt its bb arena, improved its football stadium and is building new FB practice facilities. It's athletic facilities are good quality. It's men's bbprogram has won 22 big ten titles, tied with Indiana for most in history. Their football program is down now but historically has been good. The school is one of the top schools academically in the Big Ten. One of the top engineering schools in the country, which has produced 21 astronauts including Neil Armstrong. They have an endowment of $2.4 billion.
I sent two daughters through Purdue and have two grandsons there now. So I think Bobo has made a wise choice. Interestingly Greg Christopher was an Asst AD there and was considered a top candidate. I for one am very happy with Greg at X so I am glad they went for Bobo and not our current AD

Are we talking about the same Purdue football program?

Didn't Bob Griese go there? Then, maybe Drew Brees about 30 years ago? They're on a roll!

Mid to lower tier Big 10. For someone at the stage of life and career that Bobinski is in, I just don't get it the attraction.

Insert joke here about Purdue inspiring people to leave this planet (just like Ohio, the Birthplace of Aviation).

Even Jim Everett could call Purdue home. First QB at Purdue to beat Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame in the same season.

Purdue has the alumni, that if properly motivated, could really turn around the Athletic Department now that Burke is gone. I have many Purdue Alum in my family and many Alum grew frustrated with the outgoing AD and simply closed their wallets.

Purdue football has stunk since Joe Tiller left. The AD made a bunch of bargain hires, none of which worked out. A good coach could turn things around in short order. The last 3 coaches have been uninspiring incompetent boobs.

I still wonder if Hazell could turn it around. The previous coach basically left the place completely bare of any sort of Division I football player. If they don't take a step forward this year, then yes I think he's done.

My take on Hazell is that he does not have the admin skills to run a big time FB program.

That could be. My guess is he gets this year to figure it out.

I wonder if Painter might be on the same timeline.

Wonder if Greg Christopher was considered or had interest ... he has ties to Purdue before Bowling Green. We've been pretty much excellent ('cept one) on ADs at Xavier.

Yes, multiple publications considered him a favorite, or at least in heavy consideration for the job over the last few months.
