CBS has begun previewing conferences, and here is their take on the Big East....http://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/big-east-offseason-storylines-villanovas-national-title-gives-league-momentum/. I like and agree with what they have to say about the Muskies and Villanova, and hope they are right about the competitive balance of the rest of the league.

The strength of the league will 100% be determined by the bottom 6- Providence, Marquette, Butler, St. Johns, Depaul, Georgetown.
It'll be the same as last year
Tier 1: Nova and X - Ranked all year- top 4 seeds, probably close to top 10 teams all year
Tier 2: Creighton & Seton Hall (Last year it was Providence/Butler/Seton Hall) - ranked on/off last year
Tier 3: the Rest - we had 1 team of the rest go to NIT last year.
How tier 3 does in OOC will pretty much determine the strength of the league.
Wojo should be on a slightly warm seat this year- they had the talent for an NCAA team last year, same with Georgetown...would have NEVER thought 5 years ago I'd be saying Marquette and Georgetown are the ones that need to step it up.

Christ, it's Wojo's third season. Little early for hot seat.
2014–15 Marquette 13–19 4–14 T–9th
2015–16 Marquette 20–13 8–10 7th
Marquette: 33–32 (.508) 12–24 (.333)
Total: 33–32 (.508)
He cleaned house when he got there and has only had 2 classes and the first one was late jump on recruiting. He also just lost a lottery pick.

They also just extended him this past December through 2022. Don't think his seat is even remotely warm. Buzz left him absolutely nothing and while I'm still unsure of his in-game coaching, he's done a real solid job recruiting.

Exactly.........And when he has one big season everyone will be clamoring for him.....Marquette is going to have a hard time keeping him.

Marquette has a Top 10 athletics/basketball budget in the country. Unless Duke comes calling when Coach K eventually retires, I'm pretty sure he sees this as a destination job.

Didn't Buzz leave for VT? Just hard to say its a "destination job" with top 10 budget after last guy left for VT.

At the time, Buzz said he didn't have a lot of faith in the Big East long-term. Maybe that was part of it, but what I really think was going on was that Buzz knew he didn't have a tournament-caliber team until he almost completely turned over personnel (which would take 2-4 years). He got out while the getting was good in order to get a fresh start rather than try to bring the program back from a few years of mediocrity.

Buzz had a public falling out with the administration and decided to take a pay cut to go to VT. Buzz also cited the New Big East and FS1 for lack of future exposure (pretty hilarious considering where he went) and there was a known history of him being frustrated that Marquette wouldn't admit a number of his recruits.

Am I the only one who thinks Marquette should definitely make the tourney next year? All they really lost was ellenson. They return their 2nd-6th options from last year who averaged a combined 57 ppg. They also add Reinhardt who averaged 11.4 on a solid USC team last year and Rowsey who averaged 19.2 at UNC Asheville. Throw in 3 top 100 recruits and they have all the makings of a tournament team that could be dangerous. Their only real question mark is size. Fischer is 6'11 and rarely used Heldt is 6'10, but aside from that no one is over 6'7. I think they'll be fine playing 4 guards with Fischer playing 32 minutes at the 5 and Heldt playing a few there. I'm surprised they aren't being more talked about.

I think they will definitely be in the mix. My only concern is what you mentioned with size. I honestly have no idea how they don't get absolutely smashed on the glass night in and night out. They ranked 229th and 225th in Offensive/Defensive rebounding last year and they lose an elite rebounder. Fischer is decent on the offensive glass but had the same defensive rebounding rate last year as Myles Davis. I'm sure part of that was Ellenson taking a ton of them but still. Also not sure how they will be defensively since a lot of their guards would be considered pretty small by Big East standards (Wilson, Carter, Howard and Rowsey are all 6'2" or under).

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Even more indicative of the fact that this wasn't a normal coaching move.

I don't get why Wojo gets the free pass that he got last year...I get rebuilding but look at the roster- after Xavier they might have had the best front court in the Big East- they had that played like a lottery pick for most the year and a lot of nice pieces.
20-13 is a bit inflated - they went 11-0 against teams ranked 200+ in kenpom. If it's a legit 20-13 in the big east you should be at least a bubble team- X was 20-12 entering the Big East tournament in 14-15 and ended up with a 6 seed I believe.
For reference - Xavier went 5-0 and Nova 6-0 against 200+

Yeah, their season wasn't just disappointing. It was massively disappointing. At minimum, that team should have been in the discussion for the NCAA tournament. They didn't even come close to that.

They were not able to pull out wins in close games. I guess you can partially blame Wojo for that. They started three freshmen, including a freshmen PG. Their season was up and down and I blame that on youth. They only have two freshmen listed on their roster this season.

Yeah but I think a lot of that gets negated by losing Ellenson.

Buzz and Crean.........Come on it's Marquette. There are 10-15 other jobs that are and will always be better.

Crean I can understand going to Indiana - there is more upside there than Marquette from a personal and historical standpoint. With Buzz going to Virginia Tech, I was almost at a point thinking that something shady was going on.

They didn't simply run into the bad luck of losing close games. Advanced metrics that account for margin of victory rather than wins or losses also showed them to be no good. For example, Kenpom had them ranked 95th. Cal State Bakersfield, a 15 seed, was only two spots below them.
Kenpom also had them as one of the "luckier" teams in basketball, coming in at 53rd.

Besides the fact he is a terrible coach, he should be fired just for that. I don't think there has been a more underperforming coach with all the talent he has had there.

He always says it that way, I think it's intentional. GTown is easily my most hated (other than Butler) team in the conference, and JT3 is a big part of that hate.

Georgetown may be afraid they'll just wind up with Craig Esherick 2.0 once Thompson III does finish. We saw last year up close and personal that they're capable of beating anyone on any given night. I wonder how they'll be chemistry-wise now that Smith-Rivera has graduated.

Fair point. He'll likely get fired and have to take a big step back like the rest of the Coach K line.

Amaker has taken multiple programs to the NCAA Tournament with a mixed bag of success. Sweet 16 at Seton Hall, struggled at Michigan, and yet was able to get freaking HARVARD into the NCAA Tournament and even snag a postseason win.

Amaker has done well at Harvard. In ten years at Seton Hall and Michigan, he went to the NCAA tourney once.

This is a bit dated (2010), but it shows the withering branches of Coach K's tree. Since this, Dawkins, Capel and Kearney flamed out spectacularly. On the other had, Wojo, of course, has an okay start at Marquette, and Quin Snyder seems to be a pretty decent NBA head coach. Otherwise, Mike Brey is the only success story.
