The NBA IS full of guys not even his caliber, especially summer league teams and do league.

There has been speculation about this for years. We will now see how far Jalen drifts to find a level appropriate for him. I never thought it would be in the NBA. He has the body, but just failed to develop other than a bit in his self control. O'Mara had better post moves as a freshman, with only a tiny fraction of the athleticism. I can't blame the staff, as I've seen what they've done with others over the years. I wish I knew why he never put it together more, but there will be a place for him. I wish him all the best.

Honestly, he was an entertaining player and could put it all together on occasion to dominate for stretches....

But he's never gotten it together mentally. Dumb fouls quick temper and the occasional bonehead play will all need to be addressed before he can make any real money at the sport. He can play in lower pro league where his phyisical dominance overshadows his weaknesses.

The draft was 3 days ago, summer league negotiations just started. I'd be shocked if he isn't on a summer league roster.

One of the worst things about this board is how posters get so negative towards players who leave early. Though in Jalens case, he's pretty old and it was a no brainer.

Here's the thing. I'm not trying to "be negative" toward him. I'm just trying to be real. I don't think he's an NBA talent. And I don't think he'll make "a lot" of money overseas, either. Mainly for the reasons previously addressed. Do I wish that were not the case? Of course. Am I pulling for him to turn the corner? Absolutely. But let's not rail on fans just because they can see -- and state -- the obvious.

I hope he's getting the right advice from his agent.

In rare cases some guys (like archidiacano) can pick up a small amount of guaranteed money when signed as FA for summer league....i really hope his agent isn't telling him to hold out for something like that.

I guarantee he's had offers to join teams- but it's also finding a place where you might actually have a shot of playing...

Some guys figure it out and some guys don't. I wish him well. He will make money playing basketball somewhere.

I feel like there's just not much to say right now. We are in the stage where agents are talking to different teams, but nothing concrete has happened yet. She had some good stuff on Stainbrook last year, because he was actually working out with various teams and did Summer League.

Stainbrook would eat him alive in the post.

It's more than mental. You have to do more than jump high to play in the NBA.

His offensive post moves are non-existent...I take that back, he has one over the shoulder hook. That's it. His footwork skill is far below that of a 3 year post player. As others have noted, O'Mara has made greater strides in one year in terms of offensive skill set in the post.

He is a liability on defense. He doesn't just have a "propensity" to foul...he's a foul machine. When he's not fouling on the ball from poor footwork, and defensive intelligence, his help side efficiency is not good either. He's not smart with defensive rotations, and is often out of position off the ball.

His jump shot is OK. He's shown some touch from 15 feet. Honestly, he should have used it more to round out his offensive game, but hasn't utlizied it enough for it to be a threat.

His basketball IQ and the ability to keep composed is not good. We've all seen the consequences of that.

I love Jalen too...but what part of this equals NBA player?

The center from the Clippers a guy named Deandre Jordan, pretty much just dunks and cannot make freethrows and he just paid big time. I think Jalen has the physical tools that rival a lot of NBA players. I still believe it's between the ears w/ Jalen (mental, Basketball IQ, composure). It's all part off it.

An alarming amount of posts in this thread seem to be confusing NBA Summer League with making an NBA roster. I don't even remotely expect Jalen to make an NBA roster but I am extremely shocked he didn't find a summer league team.

Kenny Frease played in the summer league twice I believe.

I don't think Jalen is an NBA player. He's athletic but lacks some basketball skills. That said, he was a productive player for X and was a key player on a top ten team last year. So I agree with you on some of the over-the top criticism on this thread. He averaged 9.6 ppg and 6.5 rebounds per game last year. He was a good albeit not great player.

There's much proof to that...mostly that HE DIDN'T MAKE A TEAM...draft or summer league. Doesn't that tell you all you need to know?

For everyone who said he was going to average a double/double this year... He didn't even average a single double. I wish him well, but stating facts is not a criticism. The NBA is not for average college players, it's for the elite. He will follow other X players overseas and should make a decent amount of money. Hopefully he has a good agent/money manager to help him save it.

Yep. That's especially true when you take into account that he (and Farr) played only 20 minutes per game or so, yet still managed that productivity. He's a solid choice for a team in Europe and will probably get a decent contract (but nothing special). The skills he did have could have got him a shot at the NBA when paired with his athleticism, but he didn't utilize those skills consistently enough to clearly earn that shot.

I don't think Jalen is an NBA player by any means, but I feel like you are being a bit tough on Jalen. Yes, he didn't average a double-double. But he did average 9.6 and 6.5 in 19.6 minutes per game. That comes out to a Per 40 rate of 19.6 & 13.2. He had a higher eFG% than Trevon did even though he also had a higher percentage of possessions used. Additionally, he had the 138th best DReb% and the 65th best OReb% in the entire nation.

Jalen had faults as a player, but like others have said it seems this thread has become either too supportive or too negative towards him. He was a very good college player, and honestly many worse players have been invited to a Summer League roster before. It is surprising he hasn't at least had that opportunity, but he will go on to earn plenty of money overseas.

Edit: While I am sure the first response will be there is a reason he wasn't playing more than 19.6 mpg, that is fair, but a bit disingenuous when you take into account X was playing almost exclusively a 4-out lineup and he was splitting minutes with Farr.

He served his time, was a great player and role model off the floor, and graduated on time. I won't judge his career choices. I do think that Jalen is not helped with how the NBA is changed over the last few years. When Jalen came in, an X fan tried to compare him to a future Dwight Howard, who was pretty good at the time. Now, no one wants a Dwight Howard on their team, they all want bigs that can guard multiple positions and shoot.

I'm glad Jalen is playing well. As I've said many times. It was never a question of talent. It was a question of motivation. I'm not convinced he would have made much a difference if he had stayed another year ( before you grab your pitchforks) if his motivation wasn't there.
