A lot of rumors spinning that Barry "Slice" Rohrssen is out at St John's. Being reported on the Seton Hall Board and this from Zag's
Barry Rohrssen’s return home may not last too long. The associate head coach and former Manhattan College head coach has been working on a buyout with St. John’s, sources confirmed, after one disappointing year in Queens but an agreement isn’t imminent at the moment.
A report by Zagsblog.com that a buyout agreement come soon was characterized by sources as “premature.” When contacted by The Post, Rohrssen said he has been instructed by his attorney not to comment. St. John’s declined to comment as well.
Sources said it could take up to another month before the situation is resolved. The two sides are in a holding pattern, however all signs points to Rohrssen leaving the program at some point this summer. Rohrssen signed a six-year contract with St. John’s last April that reportedly was paying him up to $400,000 per season.
Sources also said Rohrssen hasn’t been actively recruiting any of the Johnnies targets, and news of him leaving the program won’t come as a surprise to those players. He will not be at the team’s Elite Camp on Wednesday, when several of the top local prospects in the area will be present, a source said.
The 55-year-old Rohrssen, who grew up in Brooklyn and attended Xaverian high school with St. John’s coach Chris Mullin, left Kentucky to help Mullin, a close friend. He developed a well-earned reputation as a recruiting guru as an assistant coach at Pittsburgh from 2001-06 and 2013-14, where he regularly landed top New York City prospects. He was the Manhattan head coach from 2006-11 and spent a year at Kentucky before coming to St. John’s.
Sources told The Post Rohrssen was unhappy with his role at St. John’s (he expected to have a bigger say in everything from recruiting matters to in-game strategy), and his relationship with Mullin had turned sour.
If Rohrssen does in fact leave St. John’s as expected, special advisor Mitch Richmond is considered a heavy favorite to replace him as the third assistant on the coaching staff, alongside Greg St. Jean and Matt Abdelmassih.
