Many of us have been following Xavier and college basketball long enough to remember life before blogs, messageboards, and internet recruiting sites. Before the days of Scout, Rivals, and ESPN recruiting rankings, kids had a more difficult time being noticed by coaches and schools. When I was at Xavier, I worked with Pete Gillen who was a big fan of Howard Garfinkel and his summer camps. Some of the best players in the game started their career in the 5 star camps, playing outside on the asphalt of Robert Morris College.
Pete Gillen hired Jay Ross as his DBO, and Jay was very tight with Garfinkel. Xavier had many players that attended Garfinkel's camps and he was instrumental in the lives of thousands of coaches and players.
He hosted his last camp last summer at the age of 85, and the basketball world lost a good one this weekend. Godspeed Mr. Garfinkel!
