Really disappointing. I think he has such a high ceiling. He likely wouldn't have played more than 5-8 minutes a game. Less if Jalen returns. Tough situation and really wish the best for him.

I think he could be one of those rare occasions of a Xavier player transferring and putting together a good career elsewhere.

Definitely a talented player, just got stuck beyond some guys. I think he could succeed at another place where he has more playing time.

Unfortunate he'll have to have sat out two of his first 3 college seasons and will only get to play 3 seasons. Luckily he's on the younger side, so he can afford to do so.

No, it's Makinde who is transferring. J.P. isn't going anywhere.

Haha! We will be fine. Just pure speculation but it could mean Jalen's coming back. He should be a good D1 player wherever he goes.

So when he says he wants to transfer closer to home does that mean Tennessee where he is from or Florida where he played at Montverde Academy?

Xville

Good luck to him...there are some flashes there, but wasn't there some hubbub this year about him not being the best in practice? Thats fine if you are iverson, but if not, thats a little bit of a red flag. I honestly think this means Jalen is coming back.

Initially I was thinking vandy. He is from Nashville and was recruited by them. Don't know how that changes with a coaching change though.

I'd think it's going to be a lesser program than that, but that's just a guess. He's basically still a complete unknown...even being a high school recruit, his ranking was all based on potential.

So sorry to see him leave, but if that means JR is returning, then it's not bad. London has to find playing time somewhere and it doesn't look like he would get much at X if he stays. He has plenty of potential and I am sure many teams would love to have him. Good luck to him.

I think it's clear that Kaiser Gates completely jumped Makinde in the rotation.

That being said, good luck to Makinde. Good kid and he's got talent. Just don't transfer to some school that we'll play!

I don't think Makinde's decision has anything to do with Jalen's. I think they are mutually exclusive. A scholarship was always available for both to be on the roster.

Except that without jalen, that would be one less person to fight for minutes against.

The issue isn't the scholarship, it's the playing time. With Reynolds (possibly) returning, London would have sat on the bench behind him and O'Mara again. London might have seen himself even behind Ekiyor. Who really knows at this point.

He's fighting for playing time behind Gaston, O'Mara, Ekiyor, Thompson, Trevon, Gates, etc. anyways. I'm not saying Jalen isn't coming back (even though I think it's slim to none), I just don't think this is a signal that he is.

I'd agree with this. He's been in practice with most of these guys, and while talented, he's no fool. (But, Thompson? Did you mean Jones?)

Closer to home would be Middle Tn. State, as he is from Spring Hill/Thompson Station Tn. That area is south of Nashville about 20-30 miles. Middle Tn. St. Is located in Middlesboro, about 20 miles east of Spring Hill. Belmont, Vandy, Tenn. State are all located in Nashville. Heck, Western Kentucky is only an hour north of Nashville too. He has a lot of choices, and I'm sure he would be welcomed at virtually any of the schools in that area...if they have a scolly open.

I really am sad to hear this as I've lived part-time in the area he is from for the last 5 years and have been really pulling for him.

Good Luck, Makinde...I wish you nothing but the best!

I always thought that if he added 20 lbs of muscle, he could be an unstoppable beast. Presently he is 6'10 220lbs. At 240, he could play inside and out with no problem.

Is Juice insinuating Taurean Thompson is still in the mix with Mr. Murray and Mack? Or did he indeed mean Tyrique Jones? Because if Taurean Thompson is still in play that would be amazing.

I was hoping London would stay, for some reason I was always optimistic about him becoming a good player. Kind of surprised he transferred considering he will sit out two years before he even plays 2.

This really bums me out.

I thought he was going to turn the corner this year and really contribute nicely. I understand he wants more playing time, but I'm sure that would have come if he just stuck with it a bit more.

I know we'll have most of the same team next year, but somehow it feels like the chemistry is changing quickly with this group. Hopefully it's for the best.

With his size and shooting skill I'm guessing London could find a spot with several D1 schools.

Do we ever really know when a player transfers if it's the player's choice or the coaches nudge.

No, we probably never really know for sure. But comments by coaches and teammates can be indications. I have never read or heard any comments by either that indicated that Makinde was any type of problem or was not wanted. All indications that I can see are that this genuinely a case where the player wants to do exactly what he says....get closer to home, and get more playing time.

He changed his mind, very recently, a "tell" would be if Thompson commits.

And he IS a great kid. Everybody liked him, including the Coaches. Many times, as happens a lot, defense was what held him back a bit.

He will do well, however, and we'll hear his name again.

Tough to see a kid transfer after Red Shirting. I thought he had a future as a player. I would expect to see him produce wherever he ends up.

With O'Mara/Ekiyor/Jones/Gaston, I can't imagine the staff is seriously going after Thompson at this point. What really stinks is that now if/when Reynolds leaves we will be two spots short.

Just sets us up with a open spot for our next 5* for 2017 ;) The glass is half-full, the two spots won't matter too much in the long run, we have depth everywhere, and if Goodin can provide some solid minutes, I think we'll be better this year than last. Too many weapons on this team still.

Yea, I think the staff is fairly content whether we get a guy last minute or not. If I had one request, it would be a 5th year guard who is very good defensively. Don't know if there are many of those out there or if they would come to X for what would probably be a limited role, but that's my wishlist. If not, I'm all for turning to 2017.

This really doesn't stink....we had 9 games play rotation mins this year- LAJ and London rarely played.

You don't need to have a full roster at all times- it's tough to keep all those kids happy with minutes - case and point - Makinde...

ArizonaXUGrad

I think it's more in practice. When you have 13, you have plenty of talent in practice.

Okay well let's see what a hypothetical practice scrimmage would be:

PG - Ed
SG - Smyles
SF - Tre
PF - Gates
C - O'Mara/Gaston

vs.

PG - LAJ
SG - Goodin
SF - JP
PF - Ekinyor/Jones
C - O'Mara/Gaston

I still think we're going to have competitive practices without London, I wish him all the best of course, but we'll be fine. Sure it's always nice to have competition at positions so people are striving to get better, but we have a lot of big men that can challenge each other and hold each other to a standard.

While it's almost universal that we wish well to a guy transferring out, it's a rare case that I'm intrigued enough that I hope I get a chance to watch the departing guy play. I do hope I get to see Makinde play down the road - he's a fascinating blend of size, athleticism and skills. It's just hard to get minutes on a team this deep and he needs time to put it all together.

Good luck to Makinde, I was always a big fan and wanted to see more of him. It is a cruel numbers game. I think that kids that Red Shirt should take extra classes and summer classes, that way perhaps he could have stayed this year, graduated in three and then transfer ed without having to sit out.

Easier said than done though. I certainly didn't do that.

I think the Dayton Flyers would love to have a talent like Makinde London. Would love to see him at NKU. I would like him to do well and I am rooting for him.

Chattanooga is the half way point between home in Atlanta and my son in Nashville. I would schedule a trip around seeing him an a game there. He's always intrigued me and I'd love to see what he can doing given some development and a chance.
