A good friend of mine is a WI grad. He doesn't think they have much of a chance. I disagree. They played horribly today. Don't think they'll play back to back shitty games.
Golf is a relatively simple game, played by reasonably intelligent people, stupidly.

Trevon matching up with Nigel Hayes will be key. Nigel played pretty bad today. Trevon will have his work cut out.

This is not the Wisconsin Final Four team of the last two years. They lost a lot of talent. Early in the year, they were terrible. They opened the season with home losses to mighty Western Illinois and Milwaukee. Then we beat them. All at their place. Coach Bo Ryan retired at mid-season to give his longtime assistant Greg Gard a shot at replacing him. Gard righted the team and they pulled off some impressive wins. He got the job. That said, they were 9-9 in the Big Ten which was not a power house this year. They have two good players in Koenig and Hayes, and a few others who are not bad. Xavier has a lot more talent.
Obviously, they have gotten better since we beat them in November. Then again, so have we. We gave you guys a couple of pretty good games during the conference season, but still lost. Obviously, Gard does not have any experience leading a team into the NCAA tournament, but he has been on Ryan's staff forever, so he surely has been there often enough. Still, I expect Mack to have a significant edge in experience. They are not a team to be taken lightly, but you guys are better. I expect you to knock them out Sunday and leave your fingernails intact.

My good friend's favorite team is Wisconsin so I've watched about 15 games of theirs this year.
They play ugly like tonight a lot. They're going to want to keep the game in the 50s or 60s.
Nigel Hayes has turned into a very solid 3-4 who played most of his time down low last year but this year has turned into more of a volume shooter who takes lots of jumpers. His shooting percentages aren't very good.
Ethan happ is a very good freshman post player. He averages like 12 and 8, but I feel like James or Jalen would be too big for him to handle defensively.
Bronson koenig is a solid pg who can shoot the three and run the offense. He has become a bit more of a volume shooter due to lack of depth, but he can beat teams from deep
Vitto brown plays the 4. He has gotten much better as the year goes on. He has the size to play down low but mainly likes to shoot jumpers and 3s. His 15-18 foot jumper is a very high percentage shot.
Showalter is more of a "scrappy guy". Can shoot the 3 decently when open, likes to cut to the hoop for some layups. I would describe him as a very poor man's JP
The bench:
Jeremy hill: decent pg who takes most shots from 3 and does it decently.
They basically go 6 deep but they have 3 more guys who get a few minutes. All forwards. Two of them can shoot the 3 at about a 33% clip. Decent rebounding from all 3. I wouldn't expect much from the bench though.

Haha gosh your wife is no fun.
For the game however, I think we have the skills to win this game. Definitely need to try to shut down Nigel Hayes first and foremost, who takes care of that job? Tre? Remy? Who knows.

Wisconsin fan checking in - hope you don't mind. Just correcting one thing here - the Badgers were 12-6 in the B1G, tied for third. UW started the season 9-9, which might be where the Marquette fan got that number stuck in his head.
Also, I'm a big JP fan - I live in MN and he was in the same conference in HS as my daughters' HS - that conference produced both JP and Tyus Jones and has a couple more coming through the pipeline soon (you guys may know this name since it has Ohio ties - Gary Trent Jr.).
Anyway, I'm feeling a just-happy-to-make-it-this-far vibe amongst the UW fanbase. I think we have hope, but not expectations. Good luck - always respect you guys,

Nice post......welcome. The respect goes both ways, at least from me. Wisconsin has had some very nice teams in the past, and any team that has won 20+ games should be given respect. I think this ends up being a grind it out type game. I'm hoping that the depth of the Xavier bench pays off and Xavier moves on, but that certainly isn't guaranteed. Good luck to the Badgers (but just a little more for the Muskies! :). )

It happened every year before the Big East. We still get that "little guy" name recognition shit.
Everyone wants to pick "the" upset. And our game could be "the" upset.
I like it. A lot. Bulletin board material works great for 20 year olds.

Also should mention that 3 of the Badger players are from Ohio - Nigel Hayes, Vitto Brown, and Khalil Iverson. The first two are starters - Iverson plays sparingly, but is a video game-esque dunker - really his only function at the moment.

I was rooting for Pitt.
When the bracket was announced I said that I'd rather see anyone on the #6, #7, #8, #9, #10 or #11 line than Wisconsin. I was not wanting to play them. I'd like to amend that and say pretty much the entire 5 line would be preferable to Wisconsin. Yes, they had early losses to a Western Illinois team that didn't even make their conference tournament. Unfortunately, that was early. We're at now, now (footnote Spaceballs). Wiscy has won on the road at Maryland and at Iowa. Not easy to do. They also beat Michigan State and Indiana. Now, look at the other teams in the 6-8 seed range. None of them have that many wins of that caliber. The only reason they're on this seed line is because of their early losses, which isn't a reflection of how they're playing now. Finishing the regular season 11-1 in the Big Ten is not your typical #7 seed. I don't think or 1-3-1 will bother them if we find ourselves needing to go to it. They're also tough defensively.
They like to slow it down. The vast majority of their games are slow tempo with the number of possessions being in the low 60s. If we get ahead of them we should stay ahead of them. But, if we get behind, they have a tendency to make teams look like they've got cement in their shoes.
We can beat them. We should beat them. But, DAMN!!! Why couldn't we have been matched up with someone else?? Like....ANYONE else in the 6-8 range would have been preferable.

Wisconsin will be tough but it's the tournament, it's nothing but tough games from her on out. I like facing a team that isn't going to murder us in transition and doesn't shoot the lights out from 3. I also like that we won last night playing a style we don't see much of (when was the last time we played almost exclusively m2m and ran almost our entire offense through the post?). We won without needing some of our best players to do much (Myles Tre sumner and JP were relatively quiet) and have some gears we didn't need to use.
I have a lot of respect for Wisconsin but feel good about the matchup, as long as we don't get refs from Manitowoc.

We have had more than our fair share in how upsets in our region have played out, I'm fine with the draw. I'd rather go strength against strength than play a good offensive team like ND.

Xavier had been to the tournament in the same stretch in 97,98,01,02,03,04,06,07,08,09, and 10.

I kind of liked this gem from when we beat Portland State in 2009:
http://www.oregonlive.com/march-madness/index.ssf/2009/03/the_band_had_more_energy_than.html
Xavier is an ordinary tournament team. They don't have a player capable of taking over a game. They don't have exceptional depth. They're not anything close to the Kansas team that beat PSU on the way to a national title last year. As matchups go, this was the most winnable game the selection committee could have tossed PSU's way.
This was AFTER Xavier had won the game.
On a side note, Portland State was the Big Sky Champ that year (like Weber State this year). In the next round Xavier beat Wisconsin to make the Sweet 16.
