No kidding. The bar was already insanely low for Seton Hall, but it's not like the cupboard was totally bare -- still had Whitehead, last year's BE ROY, and Desi Rodriguez. It's not like SHU was St. John's.

Xavier wasn't on anyone's radar for Top 25, and yet they spent a majority of the season in the top 5.

Total bullshit.

That's not a bad idea if someone gave the coaches intel that Chris Mack would be national coach of the year. It's easy to overlook what Jay Wright does year-to-year, and Willard should get credit for getting Seton Hall to gel when his seat was getting hotter each season.

Wasn't Angel Delgado actually FOY? Whitehead was the preseason choice, but he got hurt in the middle of the season. He still made the all freshman team, though. Of course, this just adds further to your point. It wasn't a major secret that Sterling Gibbs was at the heart of the chemistry issues last year, and they had plenty of talent after they got rid of him.

Yeah, that's what I was saying, but phrased it poorly. Whitehead, the BE ROY (Delgado), and Desi Rodriguez. Three separate individuals who were key contributors on that team last year who were back this year. That is a lot of talent.

I would have no problem with Mack and Wright sharing it because Wright shouldnt be punished just because his team is good every year and was supposed to be good. That is the sort of thing we used to get pissed about when in the A10 and X always got passed over for some of the awards including COY. But Willard?? In the words of Chad Johnson/Waggy...

....Child Please.

I don't know why we are still surprised when coaches/players are overlooked by what is a majority east coast group of writers and decision makers. It does in no way deminish what he has accomplished. Congratulations Coach!

John Chaney won this award back to back in 87-88. I find that troubling. How many associations have a "Coach of the Year"?

Well, Chaney was a great coach and that was the pinnacle of temple's success, so I don't see why that's troubling

I find this award far more meaningful than the AP COY. This is an award from Mack's peers. And good for him. He deserves all the accolades. This is going to cost XU a pretty penny. And I couldn't be happier about it.

Willard won it because he did so bad last year. He had talent last year and didn't do crap with it and this year his talent played to what they should be. Mack got screwed

This reminds me of something I heard years ago.

Chris Mack...Number 1 in the country, number 2 (or 3) in your own conference.

Absolutely weak! MOR said it "BE Bias".

Did he win another award?
Mack's COY noted above is from the basketball writers, not other coaches.

I would think this would actually make the other coaches in the BE look kind of foolish. They cannot recognize what the rest of the country recognizes.

I'd be curious to see how the voting broke down. When the max votes a guy can get is 9, it can make for some weird results.

But yeah, what a joke. What really annoys me about Willard is his performance last season lowered the expectations for this squad. Never mind that it's possibly the most talented single class in the Big East, and they made the usual sophomore jump.
