Another #5 National Ranking, another time we shyt the bed. And you could see this one coming a mile away after our amped up home win over Nova.
First off, Hats of to The Hall. They beat us today. They have a great team, and it was Senior Day. The way they came out and too it to us is to be admired. Getting the rebounds, the lose balls, the second and third chances, they played their pants off. They also needed this game and today they punched their ticket to dance. They had a great crowd, a great team and we were the signature win to a great season that will now take them to the NCAA Tournament.
We blew goats today. We had a chance to be #2 in the Nation but it passed right through our hands. Every time we tried to rally they had an answer, and we had many beautiful plays that just kept coming up short. It seemed we had 4 or 5 straight possessions in the first half where we should have scored but didn't, and it really set the tone. Playing on the road never helps, and I think we got a crappy whistle today. Some of the no calls when we took it to the rack, some of the charges turned into blocking fouls, and the WTF? Technical on Jalen. Does anyone have an explanation for that?
Even with the crappy whistle, I don't think it mattered. Seton Hall is the winner and my congrats to them. At least the conference can get three teams in now. It is possible that Butler and Providence could finish strong and the winner of the 4 vs 5 matchup between them could also get a bid. Butler has their hands full with Seton Hall though coming up, and Providence's #1 enemy is Providence and as they showed against DePaul they can strike at any time. I could see a 3 or 4 team league, but because of today, it is at least 3.
Our RPI dropped to 5. If we beat Creighton, we will finish in 2nd place at 4-4. We will have swept DePaul, St. Johns, Providence, Butler & Marquette, and split with Nova, Georgetown, Creighton and Seton Hall. We will finish 8-1 at home in conference and 6-3 on the road. Those are impressive numbers for this conference. I personally regret all the losses, because that is what fans do. I would want them all back. If I could have one, it would probably be Georgetown, because I would like to get back to having undefeated seasons at home. I love it when nobody wins at the Cintas but us.
If we beat Creighton and then win the Big East tourney while beating Villanova in the Final, I think we are going to be a #1 seed. I think our RPI would end up being are 2 or 3. I think all of our numbers will look strong. I still think we have a dog in this fight, and I want to get our first Big East Championship out of the way as well.
Losses are a great time to take stock. This is a fantastic year. We still have a hell of a lot to play for and all of it is within our grasp. We have a long week of practice with no midweek game before Senior Day. I expect that Coach Mack will have their full attention. If we continue to play well, we will get another shot at Seton Hall soon enough, and revenge is a dish best served cold. Winning the Championship in the Garden would be a fantastic end to the regular season.
We are 25-4. If we make the strong run we can end up 29-4 and a 2 RPI. We are 14-1 at home, 8-3 on the road and a perfect 3-0 on a neutral court. A combined 11-3 away from the Cintas. That is flat out impressive. I wanted to make that 12-3 today but alas it was not in the cards.
They say a loss can make you stronger. I don't like losing, but I would like us to rebound strong right now. If you gonna have a loss, the timing on this one is probably pretty good if we can use it to our advantage. After our last three losses we won all three of the next games by an average of 15 points. I don't like Creighton chances as we say farewell to Big Game James and Remy Abell.
It is time to turn it on strong and finish this thing. We have a lot to be thankful for and a lot to play for ahead.
I love this team and I can't wait to pay tribute to our Seniors.
