I love player profile pieces like this. They really humanize the players, allowing you to appreciate that they're much more than athletes we enjoy watching compete. Kaiser and his mom clearly have the same mother-son bond that makes me homesick every day.

That's a nifty fact, it does seem like they are close, and even though it was a very short article, it was still something interesting to learn about one of our guys. Wonder if he can sing at all...

I imagine he can, unless his father is tone deaf and he inherited the trait. I find that unlikely given that his father is a record producer. Singing proficiency tends to run in families. My aunt was first soprano in sUCk's music conservatory, and every individual on that side of the family (including my siblings and me) are really good singers. After my mother mentioned our aunt's talent to the choir director at our parish, he begged us to join the children's choir until our parents effectively forced us. It ended well though, as we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

There is, however, far more to singing than vocal talent alone. Singing in front of others requires a lot of gumption, fearlessness, and a tendency to externalize one's personality. As for Gates, he seems a bit more type-B than his mother's obvious type-A personality. He doesn't strike me as someone who would enjoy singing in front of a crowd. But who knows; I could be wrong.

Great feature.

Neat family profile. Good for them. She obviously is very talented.

He does sing at the very end of the clip. He doesn't open his mouth much and he might have only because his mom accompanied him, but he was right on pitch.

His dad managed producers before getting involved in A/R & exec positions at record labels so I doubt there is any discernible talent there.

I didn't mean to suggest his father is talented, just that he's unlikely to be tone deaf. I doubt that an executive in the music industry would be able to appreciate good music if he were tone deaf. Ergo, because Kaiser likely did not inherit tone deafness from his father (which the video confirms), I'm sure he inherited at least some of his mother's vocal capacity.

Also, I should mention that vocal range is genetically a codominant trait, much like hair color and skin complexion. In other words, a child's vocal range is determined, in part, by that of both parents.

haha, my poor kids.

I hear ya! My sister attended a Catholic HS (that was about to close) and had only 10 people in her sophomore class. EVERY kid is in the choir she was told. Despite her warnings, she was forced to sing. After her very brief Barney Fife-esque performance, the nuns agreed that someone would have to remain silent while turning the pages for the piano player. Problem solved. My kids have futures outside of the music world.
