My favorite moment tonight wasn't one of the impressive assists, dunks, or clutch 3s. Nope, it was the childlike grins on Ed's and Farr's faces after that embarrassing drive, dump, and dunk. That play was something you're more likely to see in a pick-up game at your local playground. Ed made Nova's defense, which holds its opponents to 38% shooting, look that bad, and it's clear from the look on his and his teammates' faces that they were having the time of their lives. I'm thrilled for them.

Yeah, like I said earlier, JP M.F. Macura was a total gangsta tonight. I'm sure Tu is proud.

Also, anyone else catch Raftery say "Macura tends to get on his opponents' nerves," after JP's aggressive theft of the ball down low? I felt like saying, "#understatement." JP certainly showed tonight that he has the talent and hustle to back up his bravado. If it annoys opponents, good. It's helpful when opponents are distracted.

First time I've seen that done in a regular season game, they usually skip that stuff. It really showed that FS1 was putting real emphasis on this game, top broadcast team, Lavin too, Usually the post game wrap up in back in the studio with tosses to the floor of the game, they reversed it doing all the post game work at Cintas tossing occasionally back to studio. I'm assuming they were expecting a big audience and tried to impress them with a quality broadcast. All insults about Lavin aside, they did a really good job, impressed with FS1. It'll be interesting to see what the national ratings numbers are

Great win, roll on Musketeers roll on!!!!

My experience

Got to the game about 6:10. The concourse was completely full. Felt like a samon swimming upstream(this is a good thing 50 minutes before tip). First order of business, get a craft beer up top. The lines were very long(a good thing). Could see the student section was completely full and rocking. Got to my seats about 25 minutes to tip, the warmup was going on and Gates was wowing with his slam dunks. About 12 minutes to tip, one would be hard pressed to find an empty seat in the building.

Crowd was rocking all game. Stood more than I sat. Felt bad for the magic halftime show. They were very good but didn't get much response. I'm not concerned because I was there for the game.

Everything about the game was great. It was an experience.

My son mentioned in the first half how Xavier was definitely out subbing them. About 10 minutes left in the game I noticed that Villanova was walking up the court. The whole team. I'm still amazed that Xavier is still going 10 deep. There isn't a weak player on this team. Everyone is playing their role and know that their role may change depending on the match ups.

That was an incredible game last night. The first 10 minutes was probably the best start to any college game all year. Both teams were hitting shots, no turnovers and very few fouls were being called. It had a great flow to it. We were able to keep our foot on the gas all game offensively and finally pull away down the stretch. Nova is an excellent basketball team. I just wonder if their lack of implementing a zone defense is going to hurt them if/when players get in foul trouble in the tourney. They can usually get away with poor shooting because their defense is usually spectacular. I just hope that we have the opportunity to play them again at MSG. The best part of the game on tv last night was Gus......EDMUND. SUMNER. POINT. GUARD!

I'm still grinning at work thinking about the game. This team is so much fun to watch -- so many different guys who can shoot the ball and beat you, and everyone on the team plays with confidence and trust in one another. The difference in passing and ball movement between the two teams was stark: Xavier moved the ball around like water flowing while Nova was consistently looking for bail-out passes after being denied on drives.

And defense? I know the final score doesn't reflect it, but so many solid defensive performances. I thought it was Kaiser Gates' coming of age on the defensive end. He was consistently in good position and made some great hustle plays that don't show up in the stat sheet.

Just an amazing night. The crowd was on point the entire game -- it was loud, raucous, and hyped. The students led the way and the rest of the arena kept up. One of those games I'll never forget attending. Thanks to everyone there who helped make it special.

Put it this way: it was AT LEAST AS GOOD as a Crosstown environment.

It was the best the Cintas has ever sounded, and in my opinion was better than any shootout I have witnessed. I have attended nearly 20 shootouts in my life, and the crowd last night was better than I have seen for any game...ever. The blue hairs were in their seats 25 minutes before the game. The students were "ooh-ing" and "ahh-ing" the layup line like they were watching the WEBN fireworks. The entire building would gasp and groan in unison...in the middle of a play, as if we could see what was coming.

It is very difficult to objectively compare crowds from one era to another, so I admit, I could be just hopped on Xavier spirit right now. We have played for larger stakes, we have played against #1 teams before, I have attended some of the best games in Xavier history...and this ranks at the top as far as the electricity and buzz that was in the building.

FS1 with their live broadcasts, Bill Murray sitting behind Christi Mack, Tyler Eifert flashing the X, and the experience matched the hype leading up to the game. They squeezed nearly 500 more people in the building than we have seats. The venue seats 10,250 but there were over 10,700 people there. You couldn't walk 3 feet in the place without bumping into another human being.

I love this league. I respect Nova, and I am glad to get that monkey off our back.

That was way better than any shootout. The shootout has a contingent of UC fans that try to make their presence felt but last night was all Xavier.

That was the best crowd and the best game I've been to at Cintas. It's probably better than any game I saw at the Gardens as well. Typically there's a lull at some point - the team slows down, the fans kind of sit on their hands for a while. Last night there was none of that. The place was electric for 2 plus hours. It was one big party for about 11,000 people.

Great summary, Nuts. Usually I tune into Joe and Byron on IHeart Radio if I can't be there in person and sync it up with the TV feed, but last night I went with the full FS1 experience---and it was superb. Gus and Raft were on it and the pre and post game coverage was outstanding. I hope there were a lot of eyes on that game last night because Fox did themselves proud- so much better than your typical 4 letter network broadcast. That was Big Tyme stuff in every way- great play, great coverage and two excellent teams.

I think we are just at the start of this League taking off and Fox has to be happy with the product they are getting. If the teams in Chicago and New York can somehow get themselves relevant again, look the hell out.

But as to last night? Fantastic job, all!!!

On a side note, Jay Wright was extremely complimentary of X in his post-game presser last night, and touted the league's strength.

“I never wanna lose but I’m glad where if we’re gonna lose, we lose to a good Big East team. I’m glad No. 1 and No. 5 was Xavier and Villanova, not somebody else from some other league.”

He's a class act, even though his suit, shirt, and tie combination was awful last night. Patterns all on 3? Gross. He's undeserving of the Fashionable Four this year.

Here's a link to a great article - After Xavier-'Nova classic, there's no denying new Big East anymore (http://www.foxsports.com/college-basketball/story/no-5-xavier-beats-no-1-villanova-proves-new-big-east-alive-and-well-no-longer-afterthought-022416)

Isn't it amazing what happens when Villanova only shoots at a 33% clip from outside? Even without Sean O'Mara playing because of the matchup, it meant more minutes than usual for Gates. And boy did he deliver off the bench!

Thing is, this year Nova is not good from outside. They mentioned it last night that they are 9th in 3PT percentage in the Big East. They just shot lights out in our first meeting...kind of like Gtown and Creighton...

I cannot get over what a game that was... great performances all around!

Edmond Sumner
What can you say that hasn't already been said... kid went off for 19/9/6. That 31 point difference from the game which shall not be named doesn't seem so big, when you can add a point guard into the mix who scores or assists on at least 37 points (more if any of the assists were for 3s, but I can't recall). Not to mention this freshman handled the Nova defense with poise--3:1 assist-turnover ratio is superb in that hyped up game. To add, the whole team kept the TOs to 10, and I don't think I need to remind you that we exceeded that number in the first half of the first half of the previous meeting. Oh by the way, he continued his ways as an absolute foul-drawing machine--he made and attempted the same number of FTs as the entire Nova team: 11/13. Ed was really something to behold last night, and you could tell how happy it made him to come out in front of that huge crowd (live and TV), display his abilities, and walk away victorious.

JP Macura
Has Xavier ever had anyone else that just seems to "get" the game of basketball more than JP? His BB IQ is off the charts--always seems to be in the right place at the right time--and I don't think that's a coincidence. He has such good body control finishing around the rim this year, too. And of course, his killer instinct and flair for the dramatic puts him well on his way (with two more years to go) toward Tu-level legendary steel balls status. His second 3 in a row to put us up 9 absolutely blew the top off of the powder-keg masquerading as the Cintas Center.

Myle$ Davi$
Money. What else needs to be said? This guy is a leader, and I am so glad he plays for our side. 4/9 from behind the arc last night? Beautiful! Not only that, he added 4 boards and 6 assists to the mix as well. He also stayed on the court for nearly the whole game, logging 37 minutes--he's there when you need him!

James Farr
Only four rebounds? What a scrub! Wait, forgot to mention that they were 4 offensive rebounds. With this guy roaming the paint, a missed shot isn't the end of the world. His transformation into his senior year has been discussed in detail, so no need to go into it here... but it is fun to watch it continue to play out as we near the post-season.

Jalen Reynolds
4/5 from the floor, and 3/4 from the stripe. I'll take this game from him all day every day. Jalen played well last night on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor, and I feel like the last few games he has been showing flashes of the improvement we all expected from him to begin the season. Can't wait for another March run with Jalen going beast mode.

Trevon Bluiett
Tre turned in a nice performance with 10pts, 7rb, and 3 ast. But how amazing is it that our leading scorer just scrapes by to double digit points, and we hang 90 on the #1 team in the country?! So many weapons on this team, Tre doesn't have to carry the scoring load. Not that I would doubt his ability... he was born to fill up the hoop. That quick release and *splash* ... it's a thing of beauty.

Kaiser Gates
WOW! What a phenomenal 17 minutes from this freshman! Some struggles from the charity stripe, but he finished with 5pts, 7rb, a couple of assists, and a steal. He moves so well on defense for any player, let along a big. I'm really excited with what he brings to the team.

Remy Abell & LAJr
These guys didn't score, but they grabbed a couple rebounds apiece and had 3 assists between them. This just wasn't a game where we needed much out of them, but they turned in a solid 23 minutes combined (1 turnover, on a LAJr pivot foot drag, which Nova was doing all night with impunity, but I digress) to spell our guards/wings who were having outstanding games. Role performances like this are necessary to do great things.

Sean O'Mara
Didn't play a single second, because it just was't the right match-up. But, again, what does it say about our team that someone so talented didn't play against the #1 ranked team, and we still won?! I expect Sean to get right back on the horse against Seton Hall... you may recall The Big Fundamental played 9 min against the Pirates last time, and boy did he make the most of those minutes! 9 points, 2 boards, 2 blocks, and a steal... talk about efficient!

You may be able to tell I'm a LITTLE excited... I can't wait for Sunday! Keep rolling!

There was a play in the second half where Kaiser got switched up on a Nova guard, Booth, and Booth tried to take him off the dribble. Kaiser moved his feet like a 6'0 guard and did not let Booth get around him. Kaiser forced him into a fadeaway that barely drew iron. That was impressive.

I've felt for most of the season that perception of Jalen's play has been somewhat unfair. If anyone on the team has been affected by the new officiating standards for fouls, it's Jalen. With the same approach to interior defense as last season, he's been the recipient of more foul calls, which has led to a lot more time on the bench with foul trouble than previous seasons. Without the monumental improvement of Farr's interior defense, this team could have been a disaster. That said, over the past few games, I've noticed an obvious, significant improvement in Jalen's efforts to avoid fouling. There were several instances I noted against Nova that he took a drop step when standing up to a defender and throwing up his arms in the lane. This not only kept him out of foul trouble (only 2 PFs), it also did not translate to more points in the paint for Nova. I think Jalen deserves a bit of credit for adjusting his game. While he still has the same celebratory braggadocio that he's always had, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. He's channeled his strong emotions in harmless ways, and if that helps him play with more assertiveness and intensity, I'm happy to see it.

Agreed, he has been criticized somewhat unfairly because of the expectations before the season. He has come on pretty well the last several games, and has a lot to do with resisting fouls. There is nothing wrong with his emotion that he plays with. He hasnt had many Ts this year, and I dont think he deserved any of the couple he got. I don't get why some people complain so much about that.

Agree. There has been substantial improvement in his play and emotions the last couple games. He always seems to come on late in the season.

There was one instance late second half of the Villanova game that he looked up into the stands and was screaming at someone. Same section as Bill Murray / Christi Mack so I am GUESSING there were some high level reserved Villanova seats in the same area. I couldnt make out what he said, but it wasnt celebratory. Its the dumb stuff like that which still needs improvement, and stop hanging on the damn basket after dunks.

Yeah, I worry that his hanging on the rim is going to garner a tech at some point. But then again, each time he hangs on, he seems to let go juuuuust in time to avoid the whistle. It's nerve wracking, like he's tempting the ref, pushing the limit right up to the breaking point, but not beyond it.

That said, there have been other moments where I've thought he demonstrated real composure. I recall one game (I believe the first Georgetown game) where Jalen got fouled hard and lost the ball out of bounds, but the zebras didn't call it. Mack about blew a gasket, but Jalen walked up to him and calmed him down. I was fairly surprised to see that.

So I'm guessing your glass is always half empty. FOX had to have some programming to start a sports network, just like when ESPN started, the BE was the beneficiary. FOX has piles of money. The crap that they pass off as programming, ie: MMA, 3rd world soccer, isn't exactly drawing eyeballs to the network. Who knows, by the time of the next contract the BE may have a couple National Championship under their belt.

I worked in TV for multiple years and I just don't think it's a sustainable model at all- ESPECIALLY Cable TV. The sub price for ESPN is driven up to insane amounts due to programming contracts. The bubble is going to burst soon and cable will become unbundle the consumer has demanded it- look left and right at all streaming properties available and growing every day.

Sports is no different- but there is still a great deal of value in sponsorship/in game commercials in live sports. I truly believe in 15 years we'll be spending $20 a month on a Big East Network or sorts, we'll be able to grab a college sports Bundle for $50 that includes the P5.

I don't know how Fox's strategy is working, but they're still behind on the digital aspect heavily- the fact that Foxsports Go isn't on streaming players yet certainly hurts. I don't put much trust in broadcast executives- they continually have proven to be behind the eight ball on the industry- look no further than Cable Cutters- Millenials just aren't spending $150 a month for cable anymore, demand is going down for the cable product and quickly.

The Big East programming is a relative bargain in today's rights deals. You may think that $50 million a year for substantial live programming content for 5 months is expensive, but for the volume of content they are getting to fill time on a new sports network..not to mention the fact that the teams in the league are in the largest eastern markets in the country...makes that deal cheap for them. I would also not be worried about Fox's ability to tap into the stream market and cable/satellite is not going away any time soon.
