0-4 in Phoenix, which isn't a huge surprise. I did notice that Xavier isn't scheduled to play a home game until March 15.
GoMuskies
02-26-2016, 01:57 PM
The 0-4 Muskies get a slightly less tall task this weekend with three at Mercer in Macon, GA. Mercer (3-1) seems to be pretty good themselves, though, judging by an opening weekend sweep of Radford and a weekday extra inning home loss to Georgia. Hopefully the Muskies can get their first win this weekend.

I blame their tough losses in the desert on Dawn Rogers.
Which isn't altogether fair, since apparently she's left ASU to head up the NCAA Final Four operation next year in Phoenix.
The Muskies swing through here to take on USC Upstate next weekend, so I can go check them out.

Very bad start to the season. Wonder what's going on?
They're not very good, and they're playing southern schools with a huge built-in advantage on the road. Hopefully they can hold their own once they start playing fellow northerners. Obviously, that didn't happen last year.

Clean sweep of USC-U. Blew a 7-1 lead but scored in the ninth for an 8-7 win. 3-7 now.
The "good" news is that Creighton is the only Big East team with a winning record, so it's still very possible that X will be competitive in league play.
X-band '01
03-06-2016, 07:15 PM
There's only 7 teams in the Big East - that's why it was very disappointing last year to not even advance to the Big East tournament. The team apparently had enough injuries to put them on the bad side of the standings.
Hopefully this is a very good sign of things to come in 2016.

03-15-2016, 05:46 PM
So X lost 4 straight to Vandy (3) and Louisville by a combined 37-6. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say those teams are better than ours.

Xaviee got a win today over Central Michigan to improve to 5-12. The good news: Xavier is #89 in the RPI. The Muskies are 0-9 against top 50 competition, so the schedule has been brutal. Hopefully they can compete with the much softer Big East.
Baseball is better for my blood pressure. Thank you. I actually enjoyed walking over to the X baseball games. Spend a little time at the park. The leisurely pace. Ahhhhh
GoMuskies
03-21-2016, 04:54 PM
After Vandy and Louisville stomped the Muskies, Xavier responded with 4 straight win over MAC foes who will look more like the competition Xavier will see in the Big East. The Muskies are 7-12 now with a trip to Ohio State tomorrow. 11-6-1 Ohio State has a 124 RPI compared to Xavier's 131.
GoMuskies
03-22-2016, 06:40 PM
Through 5 innings, the Musketeers are smacking around the Buckeyes 5-2.
GoMuskies
03-22-2016, 07:25 PM
So apparently the bullpen sucks, because OSU has a grand slam and a three-run homer the last two innings. 9-6 Ohio State in the 7th.
GoMuskies
04-05-2016, 10:23 PM
The Muskies are a rather respectable 10-19 following a 5-4 loss at Ball State today. I sat respectable considering the tough early schedule that led to a 3-12 start and given that Xavier has played 23 of its first 29 on the road. No reason Xavier cannot contend in a bad Big East.
GoMuskies
04-15-2016, 10:31 PM
Xavier is 1-0 in the Big East after a big come from behind win at Georgetown.
GoMuskies
04-25-2016, 09:35 AM
Xavier greatly improved their chances of making the Big East Tournament by taking 2 of 3 from St. John's over the weekend. St. John's is one of the better teams in the league (came into the series 4-2).
GoMuskies
05-01-2016, 04:57 PM
Two 4-1 wins at Butler today, and the Muskies are alone in second place in the Big East at 6-3. They've got a great shot at making the Big East Tournament now with the sweep of Butler, although X still has series to play against Creighton and Seton Hall. Those teams are far and away the class of the Big East, so getting 2 wins in those 6 games would be huge.
Butler, by the way, is 280 in the RPI out of 300 teams. So getting all 3 from them was very important.
X-band '01
05-01-2016, 08:40 PM
Taking 2 of 3 against St. John's is also huge given they're also expected to be one of the 4 teams invited to the Big East Tournament (played in Aberdeen, MD).
GoMuskies
05-02-2016, 12:06 PM
So Georgetown is the team Xavier is likely to be fighting for the 4th spot in the Big East Tournament, and the good news is that Georgetown still has to play a series at Creighton. The Hoyas aren't likely to win in Omaha (certainly not more than once). The Hoyas lost 2 of 3 at Butler, and that could be the deciding factor in who gets that 4th spot in Aberdeen.
BMoreX
05-02-2016, 12:17 PM
Do we know the times for the games in Aberdeen? I am hoping to attend if we end up making it.

Xavier won their opener at Seton Hall last night; one more win this weekend should keep them no worse than tied for 2nd in the Big East.
GoMuskies
05-07-2016, 01:27 PM
Creighton also beat Georgetown, which was nice. If the Hoyas get swept in Omaha, they're going to have an almost impossible task to catch Xavier, and they're the only ones that can keep up from 4th at worst.

One thing amazing about Xavier's weekend sweep was that Seton Hall was 19-2 at home going into the weekend series. Now the Pirates are in danger of not making the Big East tournament; they still have series remaining with St. John's (tossup) at home and Butler on the road. Georgetown only has a series at home against last-place Villanova.
Creighton is a Top 25 team in some of the polls; getting 2 out of 3 would be huge.

Going into the final weekend series, Xavier hosts 6th-place Villanova and Creighton hosts 3rd-place St. John's. Xavier needs only a tie for the top seed.
St. John's also has a bid locked up for the Big East tournament, but Seton Hall gets the final spot if they take 2 of 3 at Butler this weekend. Otherwise, Georgetown gets the spot.
Would also be nice to get a perfect week and get over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Creighton won earlier today, Xavier up 15-7 in the 8th. Assuming both win (or lose) tomorrow, will Xavier be the 1 seed by virtue of its better head-to-head record?
I wish I could get to the game tomorrow, but I don't think I'll make it.
X-band '01

Correct. With Xavier winning 15-10, either a Xavier win or a Creighton loss gives Xavier the #1 seed.
Seton Hall locked the #3 seed with a win at Butler; St. John's gets the 4th and final spot in the Big East tournament.
As for tomorrow, Xavier/Villanova will be on Fox College Sports tomorrow (think it's FCS-Atlantic) and Creighton/St. John's will be on FS1. Both games can also be streamed on Fox Sports Go.

Seton Hall completely imploded in the 9th. Xavier vs Creighton tomorrow.
X-band '01
05-27-2016, 09:31 AM
Imploding is an understatement here, Go.
Seton Hall led 5-3 in the bottom of the 9th with 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd. After a base hit by Creighton, Seton Hall committed 2 throwing errors in the same sequence; the first was an errant throw to home plate after the first run scored and the second was a throw to the outfield after trying to tag out one of the other runners advancing. The Bluejays ended up with 2 runs and a runner at 3rd.
Oh, and the winning run scored off a wild pitch. During an intentional walk.

If they pull a miracle and win the Vandy regional, they could face Louisville (#2 overall) in the super regional round.
UC-Santa Barbara and Washington are also in the Vandy regional. First pitch against Vandy will be at 8:00 PM Friday night on ESPN3.
The reason X wasn't shipped to Louisville was because a sub-.500 Western Michigan team won the MAC Tournament; it would have been intriguing to also have Ohio State and Wright State in the same regional. But as it is, I'm sure we'll have an ATL/Tel Aviv/Music City Muskie sighting this weekend!

Oh, I can't imagine how the teammates must feel. That would be hard to get over.
My sons, both grown and extremely fit young men, got caught in a rip tide last month in Florida well off the shore near a sand bar. I was watching them but didn't realize from a distance what a panic they were in. Scared the crap out of them! They are still talking about it and I had no idea.

Certainly a very difficult day for Vanderbilt; the broadcasters for the Washington/UCSB game said that Vandy's team drove up to Clarksville this morning to visit the player's family but will be back in Nashville for tonight's game. A rather chilling article about the drowning: the young man was 15 feet from the shore, but went down in 25 ft. of water. His friends thought he was joking about being in trouble. Then one or two of them realized he might not have been faking it and they went in after him. One said he was smiling shortly before he went under.
15 feet. I wonder at which point the depth in that body of water begins to recede as the shoreline is approached, such that perhaps he could have started to bob down to up as he worked his way to safety. Of course, he couldn't have known when to try that. What a damn, senseless tragedy.
Always respect the water. Always.

Hit batter, but no harm done. Still 5-4 UCSB going into the bottom of the 8th.
Soria, Givin and LaRue due to hit for Xavier.

Infield single by Givin, but picked off by a borderline balk move.

And now 4 of the last 5 Xavier hitters have struck out. Still gotta make up a run in the 9th.

Now it's a dangerous spot. Schramm starts the 9th with a walk and a sac bunt; the Gauchos have a man in scoring position for the first time since the 4th inning.
