Creighton is a home court hero. They're nowhere near the NCAA Tournament, but they're capable of beating top 25 teams at home. Games like this are dangerous because it's the kind of game that defines their season. It's a chance for a high water mark for a team that probably isn't going dancing, and they're going to come out like it's their "Super Bowl."
We cannot sleepwalk through this, or we'll be put to sleep rather early. High rankings come with big bullseyes.

I have a bad feeling that Creighton is just going to shoot lights out this game... partially because our defense will allow them open looks from outside. Sure hope I'm wrong!

They did win at Seton Hall, FWIW. Quite handily, too. They just haven't been the same team since their meltdown at Georgetown.

Agreed. It's not the Wragge and McDermott teams that's for sure, but in their own building I wouldn't be shocked if they shot 50% or better. They're going to be up for this game so hopefully the X players are too. Can't imagine they would for a game on the road but is there any talk about resting Farr? Not that we'll win handily without him, but I'd rather him be healthy for the rest of the season

I'm seeing X -1. Yuck. That line tells me Vegas is backing the Bluejays. Pretty sure that line will entice a lot of X bets. If the line doesn't go up a couple points...yuck. It is a tough place to win - big, loud and passionate crowd for sure.
BUT, I was truly rather stunned at the environment at the Providence away game, and in a very prideful, positive way for the Big East. That place was shaking. I know it doesn't make much sense to compare a single game that already took place to a next future game, but, at least when it comes to sustaining focus and composure, I'm not too worried about this Xavier team's ability to do both.

Bluejays fan here. Omaha native. I have been lurking and read some interesting comments. Thought I'd add a bit coming from the other side's perspective for you:
1. In my opinion, your team is a bad matchup for us. You are tall at pretty much every position. I think our centers Groselle and Hanson can more than hold their own against your big guys. However, it is our guards that will have the most troubles I'm guessing.
2. There are some fellow Creighton fans who will disagree with me, but I don't think our homecourt is nearly as intimidating as it should be. The arena itself doesn't hold sound well. So while there's 17,000+ fans there, it's not some raucous venue like Viejas Arena. It can get loud, but it won't be for 40 minutes.
3. It is Abide night, which is a nonprofit organization here in the Omaha area that restores homes in underprivileged neighborhoods. They have heavy ties with Creighton as former player Josh Dotzler & his father I believe are founders. They pass our shirts that say "better together" on them and pass around donation buckets.
4. Any Xavier fans attending might want to try parking in Lot D. That is where we park every single game and it's fine. Parking is $8. Afterwards, try Old Mattress Factory, Liberty Tavern or Blatt Beer & Table for drinks and food. All are walking distance and you can leave your car in the lot and retrieve it just fine afterwards.
5. I don't think any Creighton fan is thinking of this game as our "Super Bowl" as some have mentioned. Every Big East team that we play we consider it a good game to go to. We aren't expecting ourselves to make the NCAA Tournament so I think most fans will just being going to the game tonight and wanting to enjoy it. While it would be a great win tonight, there's not some desperate attitude to get a win tonight.

FYI: We have not been shooting the ball well at all lately. There's been some fan frustration at the number of wide open missed shots. I really don't see that changing much tonight. Even if we do shoot it well, there's other areas of the game we have to be better in to get a win tonight.
I don't think it'll be a walk in the park for Xavier, but an 80-71 final score seems about right.
Our city is a good place to visit most months out of the year. It ranks pretty high as a foodie scene and the Old Market is a cool area downtown. However, the recent fire has been a sad development.

If Xavier can't beat Creighton tonight, it's going to be a few years before they get another solid chance. One of the Bluejays' best players is a transfer from Kansas State (name is escaping me) that's sitting out this season. They've also got a couple of 4-star studs coming in, so the cupboard is slowly being filled in Omaha.
If Xavier is able to limit Creighton's shooting (and that's a big if), the Bluejays have little to no chance of winning.
section202jay

Sounds like us some years. We have a tendency to give players a career night. Coach McDermott's strategy is often times to clog the lane and let opponents shoot from deep. If they get hot, it doesn't stop.
I think most Creighton fans will accept a .500 conference season and 17-18 total wins. I think that's about what most reasonable fans predicted/expected coming into this year. Next year, its NCAA Tournament or bust with what we have coming back in addition to Marcus Foster (the K-State transfer) joining the team. This might be biased, but he is an instant BE POY contender.

So you're saying if Creighton can't shoot, Xavier will win? That seems a likely result.
This may not be Creighton's Super Bowl, but Sat. is definitely Butler's Super Bowl. They are desperate for a quality win, and they have evidently gotten their act together, as they have beaten Gtown by 12 and St.John's by 33. This is a bitch of a week for us. I will take the loss. Stop all the 1 seed talk. This would be the team to be the 1st #1 seed to lose to a 16

Really like how la has played this game...Creighton has gone ice cold and we are throwing it to the big men which I love.

Last 8 posessions X played zone. Creighton 1 point.

It's not that bad. Creighton is always a very tough game in Omaha.
A #1 seed plays a team that comes from a league you only hear about the first week of the tournament and would be a pastry cart game

When we go inside to a big. And he has it on the edge of the paint, and 2 or 3 collapse on him...don't we have any plays where someone cuts down the lane?

It appears the Xavier team has completely forgotten how to play on both offense and defense.
They can't get the ball into a good position. They can't find good shots. (Or they take bad ones — has Trevon taken a single good shot tonight?) They can't seem to contain a ball handler on defense.
It's been an improvement to push the ball inside this half, but Reynolds should be eating these guys for lunch and he looks clueless.

Creighton sucks against the zone. They have a good post player, yet they're not going to him.
I'm not complaining!! I'm sure McDermott will not make any sort of adjustment either!
We can do this!

Not too late, but boy we make it tough on ourselves.

7 minutes to go and they've only scored 46 points. WTF?
This is like a bad UC or Miami game where no one can score.

Gotta regroup for the next one, at least the 1-3-1 looked good for a little bit, but man our man to man defense needs some serious improvement if we want to make a deep run in March. Gotta get that figured out soon.
