Not sure why that's surprising. It's almost exactly where Sagarin's predictor rating would set the line. Marquette is a borderline top 100 team playing at the #6 team in the country.

Vegas is seeing St. Johns as an anomaly and that we might match up better against Marquette.

I'm very surprised. Figured it would be around 10-11. Marquette's zone gave us some trouble last time against them and if they were anything less than abysmal from 3 it would have been very close.

I thought it would be 8 or 9. I don't think Marquette can shoot as bad as they did at home. I'm expecting a close game. I'm definitely taking Marquette but would love to lose money.

agree. I doubt X can match nor surpass their 25-1 run on a semi good team.

Coaches are doing everything possible to solve the 1-3-1 defense.

I'm pretty confident of this. After losses or disappointing victory margins, here are the results of the next game:

19 point win over Alabama (neutral) after NKU
19 point win over Butler (home) after Villanova game
20 point win over DePaul (home) after St. John's, first time
8 point win over Seton Hall (home) after Georgetown

The only one that was not a blowout was the Seton Hall game. Even that was double-digit margins for the last ten minutes of the game until a meaningless basket at the buzzer, and Seton Hall is easily the best team of that group. Xavier has a history this season of bouncing back, to the detriment of the next team after a lackluster game. I expect that trend to continue.

Marquette certainly can give teams interesting matchups. They have talent. I would love to beat them soundly, it would be a great thing at this point in the season.

And we were 3-15 from 3 ourselves. If we shot anything like we could from deep that game would have been a blowout. We were more off from our norm than they were.

Yeah, the lesser Ellenson had a great game for them, and so did Jajuan Johnson. Wojo said it himself that they were the reason it wasn't a blowout.

Please people, keep justifying Macks stance on trying to get our guys to play better man to man defense. JP, Tre and Myles can't keep guys in front of them. Syracuse doesn't force their guys to play man and put themselves in jeopardy of losing. They know what they're best at and they do it.

XU suffers by comparison in the BE to VU.

Villanova crushes teams.

Opponents are finding ways to expose X or not let X's length bother them defensively, nor in transition.
Think how X will do AT Creighton, AT SH, AT Butler when barely squeking out wins at home in February.

Hope X's inside game gets stronger.

X used to look dominant but Villanova looks to have another level of confidence and talent.

I hope X can turn the dominant switch on as X has 4 away games against very difficult teams and 3 home games.

I dunno, the allure of Milwaukee weather and girls who wear a lot of sweatshirts to the bar might be too much for the NBA to overcome.

Can someone explain why James Farr sat the last fifteen minutes of the game?

Mack said he's still not 100% from the injury last week. Close, but not there yet.

They defend well, x does not, or at least hasn't in what seems like forever.

Don't know how much blame to put on our D for letting SJU and Marquette put up 80 points. But I will say this, we are getting every team's best punch. The "hunted" effect is for real.

Whatever...you don't see nova having trouble against subpar teams and they have dominated this league for a few years now. Our guys just need to have 40 minutes of defensive intensity instead of 20 or so.

Nova doesn't even have ochefu today and they still might beat providence on the road. Of course they will lose the first weekend in march again, but they take care of business in conference.

ESPN had a feature this morning where Villanova was picked most likely to lose 1st weekend of Ncaa.

Nova was playing against a hobbled Ben Bentil which had to have a negative affect for the Friars.

It certainly helped, but winning by 12 on the road with your own starting big on the bench ain't bad.

And here we go again someone just can't enjoy a great conference win. If you were not a Xavier fan you would say how entertaining that game was. Huge shots, career performances, and awesome atmosphere. Enjoy the win and stop being a troll

But see this is what I'm talking about also. This conferences bad teams have the best shot blocker in the country and arguably the best freshman in the country. Any of these wins regardless of style points is a great win. Marquette and St. John's are not Fordham no matter how much you seem to think they are

I enjoyed the win, but it's a game we are supposed to win. We play defense like that against good competition, and we will get smoked. It's not trolling, it's the truth.

Agreed. Trevon did a solid job, considering who he was up against (and how quickly refs were to whistle anyone near Ellenson), but Gates did a great job. Gates is the only rotation guy besides Remy that I consider a plus-defender, regardless of matchup.

"We stuck around when not everything was going our way, and coming into the last four minutes we were prepared for it," Trevon Bluiett said. "We hit a different gear and everything took care of itself. I wish we could play like that more often. That's where we're hoping to get to."

I'm not one to whine about refs. But apropos of 09's post I felt the game was officiated very differently on the two ends of the floor. We couldn't touch them defensively. But we seemed to have to finish through a lot of contact, and rarely with a call.

10 NBA scouts at game and Sumner goes off. Then Wojo says he can leave this year and get drafted very high. Can we maybe make sure he doesn't read that? I know they probably were there to see Ellenson but I am sure Edmond impressed.

Edmonds's first half was one of the best halves of basketball I've ever seen by someone in a Xavier uniform. He came back to earth a bit in the 2nd, but it certainly was an outstanding performance.

He's been pretty brutal lately at games with a lot of scouts so he was due a good one. But I think he was "exposed" a little v Kris Dunn, who showed what Ed can improve on this offseason to be a lottery pick.

I don't know if I'd go "very." Isnt that Fischer a senior? And they lose Ellenson for sure. That will take them some time to come back from but I could see them back in the tourney in 2 years.

Pretty sure Fischer is a junior. Pretty sure Farr is hurt. He did not play a lot if minutes and did not have his normal speed and juprebounding ability.

He pulled a hamstring two games ago and he is hurt. Those injuries can last a long time. I hope he regains his strength soon.

Please people, keep justifying Macks stance on trying to get our guys to play better man to man defense. JP, Tre and Myles can't keep guys in front of them. Syracuse doesn't force their guys to play man and put themselves in jeopardy of losing. They know what they're best at and they do it.
I felt like the M2M finally paid off the last 4 minutes of the game. X clamped down and MU crumbled. If they can play like that and mix in the 1-3-1, teams will have a very hard time getting into a offensive rhythm.

I completely agree and felt the same. It's one thing to have bad/lame calls, but as you pointed out the consistency of calls was horrible. Glad that X was able to hang in there and find a way to win. This win will pay dividends come tourney time!

That was just a terrific basketball game and it was really cool to be there in person. The crowd was outstanding..egged on by Myles Davis who wouldn't let folks sit. You can try to blame our defense, but the same defense held Marquette to 16% 3 point shooting in Milwaukee but they shot over 50% yesterday both on 3 and overall. Marquette played great, but we just had more weapons. 3 guys with over twenty? Yes please and may I have another?

Way above average day topped off by dinner at Tellers in Hyde Park. Yep. I'll take more Saturday's like that!

Happy Birthday Brother!

I went back and watched the 2nd half last night and the crowd was very audible through the coverage. I also thought that Simpkins did a respectable job on the broadcast. So many big shots made by guys across the board, JP, Myles, Trevon and a big 3 by Kaiser after he shot an air all earlier. I just hope that kid's confidence continues to grow. He can truly be that reliable "stretch 4" we've been looking for for awhile.

St. Johns I agree with, but not Marquette. Chris Mack makes a great point in the post game interview (check out at the end of the video below) where he states that the coaches keep track of lay-up's, rythm 3's, and Offensive boards and usually most games that number comes out to 20 at halftime. Marquette was 11.
