View Full Version : Me thinks very hard question

Who is your favorite player on this year's team? (My ten year old daughter Jude, who is a giant X fan) says "Dad, that is so easy....J P....he's cute". Not sure that would be the word most would call him. I guess if I had to pick one it would be Farr. Myles a close second. Your thoughts ?

I have no idea why that thumbs down is in the topic title and I can't figure out how to get rid of it, tried edit but can't seem to edit title. O well I wasn't much better with a typewriter either .

Farr no doubt. Nothing better than seeing the final product of an unbelievable transformation. Really shows what hard work and good coaching can do for a kid.

Me? Sumner followed by Myles. My son's favorite is Bluiett followed by Reynolds.

So many good choices though . . . so much better than when the choice was pretty much Semaj or Travis . . .

Jalen is casting my vote:

Sumner for me...there's always a chance something insanely athletic will happen when he has the ball.

My 9 year old daughter's 2 favs are JP and Jalen...I hope this isn't a sign of her migrating to the 'bad boys' as she gets older!

1. Trevon
2. Myles
3. Farr

I could change that order among the three of them though.

Always tend to like the emotional leaders the most.. So Myles would be mine

Then Tre just because he's a silent assassin and so smooth. Love his game and confidence

This is a hard question. If it's just about basketball, it's Myles. He runs this team and leads them. If it's about upside and potential for a ridiculous play, it's Sumner. If it's consistent defensive and offensive play, it's Farr. If it's just about scoring, it's Blueitt. And if it's about the intangibles and all out hustle, it's JP.

And that, my Xhoops friends, is why this team is so damn good.

My picks are between Myles, Sumner and Farr.

Myles: There's no way he should be as effective as he is. He's using all the grit he has and its working.
Sumner: Don't blink or he'll have dunked and you missed it.
Farr: A man among boys out there.

Bluiett, I love the way he goes about business on the court, he's literally a silent assassin, doesn't chirp up to people, hits his shot, heads down the court and is ready to play D, he's a gamer, he knows he's a gamer, and doesn't have to let the rest of the world know. He sneaks up with his point totals as well, 13-15 in the second half constantly after a bad first half, you look at the box score at the end of the game, and you're like damn, Tre dropped 18 tonight.

Bluiett might wind up with the most unassuming great career in Xavier history.

He might also be the first "pure" Big East player for Xavier, if I'm reading rosters right. I guess it depends if you want to consider Myles and Jalen on the team for their ineligible year.

Hard for me not to say Myles, but I have flashbacks of Farr smiling and laughing with Ellis during breaks in play of the UC game. That diffused a lot of the hate they wanted to feed off of (at least in my mind). That game was better decided on talent that raw emotion (where anything might happen). I guess I lean toward the older guys as the younger ones have time left to be my favorite later.

I am so proud of this team.

But I guess so Farr I am most impressed with James.

He is a coaches dream. Someone who at first seemed solid but just didn't seem to have the athleticism or quite the footwork or rebounding ability to develop into a very special player. But then he goes and proves to everyone (with his hard work over the summer and his paying close attention to what skills he really needed to improve) he can indeed elevate his game and become that very complete, reliable and dominant player. Between his senior leadership, his determination to keep getting better and the tenacity he brings in most every minute of every game, how could I pick anyone else.

Here is a player who most of us (if we are being honest) would say didn't have a much higher ceiling than what we saw from him last year. He literally has blown through that ceiling like I've never seen before. If everyone on the team brought that same tenacity, work ethic and confidence every day, we would be... well... even better than we are now.

He literally has gotten better at just about everything (including footwork, rebounding, use of the glass, mid range shooting) to the point where one has to think he now has a legit shot at being drafted (should he keep going the way he is).

There are so many great options on this team, it is hard to pick a favorite. If I had to list my favorites (out of the guys who play 20+ min/gm, here is how I would stack it:

1. Myles -- great attitude and poise, seems to finish more often than not, constantly hits clutch 3's and is ICE from the FT line
2A. Farr -- most improved player from frosh year to senior year; rebounds EVERYTHING; my only knock against him is his tendency to mishandle great, although sometimes very fast, dishes underneath the hoop. Not a huge issue, just something I continue to notice...
2B. Bluiett -- leader in points per game; solid from the FT line and, like Myles, constantly hits clutch baskets
2C. Sumner -- we knew he would be serviceable, but I never imagined him having this great of a rookie year. If it weren't for Ellenson, he might just be BE Rookie of the Year. He is the difference in us being a Top 5/10 level team, rather than just a Top 25 level team

5. Macura -- great defender; his massive three at the end of Providence game tempted me to list him in the above group
6. Reynolds -- has not quite performed at the level that was expect, but hopefully last night was his turning point for this season
7. Abell -- has had a rough year offensively, but has had some key buckets and continues to defend at an elite level

Easy one for me, Myles Davis. Has been since last season. Great player who has worked really hard to develop from a shooter to an all around player. Team leader. True Muskie!

Here he is at Little Dribblers Camp with my son!

James, by farr!

A few things stand out:

1. First and foremost is the tremendous transformation he has made, which has been much discussed already.

2. Acceptance of role - coming off the bench - not moping and complaining about not being a 'starter' - and excelling in that role with style and grace. Truly exemplifying an all-for-one / one-for-all attitude.

3. Being a team leader: I have had the privilege of being 'back-stage' before the games when the players are preparing to make their entrance (players only - no coaches) and James was the one who was obviously the leader, and they all, literally, rallied around him.

4. The interaction with Ellis in the UC game (as mentioned) also really stands out to me. I do remember being really struck by that at the time how very mature it made James appear.

5. Senior: it's sort of the way it should be. Stick around, get your degree, lead by example, on and off the court, and leave a legacy for others to follow.

Trevon. I love his demeanor. I like how his highs are never too high and his lows are never too low.

Just a great competitor.

The rest in order
1.) Myles
2.) JP
3.) Farr
4.) Jalen
5.) ED
6.) Remy
7.) Omara
8.) Kaiser
9.) Makinde
10.) Larry
11.) Stainbrook
12.) Burgess, Gaston, Coker, Bergen tied

I love them all. Team #94 is like my own family, I can't pick who my favorite kid is...they are all God's children.

This is OUR team, and I love the way they play. I wish we could lock them up with 8 year contracts, and have them play for Xavier for many years to come. So I won't single out anyone in particular, they are all my favorites.

The threads during an 18-2 season are so much better it isn't even funny.

Mine would probably go; Sumner, Reynolds, Davis, Farr, Bluiett. Tought to differentiate though, because i like all of our players this year.

This.
Best comment at Providence from fan next to me after the frustration of another Myles clutch play -- "but he is 38 years old". What we say about Roosevelt Jones. And wait 'til they see him again next year.

Myles Davis is the heart and soul of this team. He's grown into the job over the past two years. He is money at the end of close games handling the ball and making FTs. During games he's finding the open guy, making a steal, tossing in a critical three pointer. He shows emotion trying to get the Cintas crowd into games and encouraging and admonishing players when need be. He brings a champions mentality to each game and competes so hard resulting in commanding the respect of his teammates and coaches.
