View Full Version : Great quote from a Providence messageboard

This says it all about our depth this year.... "boy do they have a lot of options. One of the guys sitting with me last night said we had the 1st and second best players, and X had 3-10, and when you throw in the bench, it was even more lopsided". This from the Scout messageboard for the Friars. Here's the link to the thread: http://www.scout.com/college/providence/forums/1323-friar-talk/14499561-xavier.

Saw that on their thread too. I think it's pretty accurate. Sooo irritating with the Villanova thing. One of them said based on their game at Nova, he wouldn't say they're a good shooting team. And yet they shoot lights out against X every damn time we play them. It has to keep Mack up at night wondering what he can do differently to beat them

I'm starting to like their fan base a lot. They have an entire thread dedicated to despising JP Macura...and I agree with just about all of it. Love me some JP. Here are some of my favorites:

I haven't really disliked a player to this extent in quite some time. He seems to be the epitome of player you love to have on your team (maybe some, not me), but really hate if he's against you. He flops, draws BS fouls with with that brutal head snap, always seems to have a sh!t eating grin on his face, and is incessantly chirping throughout the game.

Really seems like the pre one-and-done era at Duke kind of player

Maybe most despised white player in the league....? I am pretty sure he relishes the role.

Macura is just a PITA. Classic white guy who flops around looking for fouls.

The importance of our depth and our moxy cannot be overstated...
-Depth: Sumner has a below to well below average game; Farr fouls out with 10+ to play; Trevon fouls out with 5+ to play
-Moxy: Overcome the rowdiest Providence crowd possibly ever; overcome the early Providence run; overcome 29 points from Providence in the final 10 minutes; oh, and JP. He's moxy.. and he's CJ Anderson's favorite player on this team

NOVA, I certainly don't regard the Pavillion and a Villanova crowd as being pansy. I've watched other Nova games played there. It's a solid atmosphere as it is, and will only get better through improvements to that facility.

In the meantime, JP has some "followers" in Providence: http://www.scout.com/college/providence/forums/1323-friar-talk/14499928-macura-most-despised-be-player

Trevon fouled out with about 2:30 to play. If it had been 5:00 we'd have been in trouble.

Regarding JP, while there are times where I believe he crosses the proverbial "line," I cannot recall a time where his antics created a negative impact. He either draws a double foul, or double tech. And then he's under the skin of opponents for the rest of the game. You could make the case that is a net positive, with it being a wash, worst case scenario.

I'd imagine there was a single tech thrown in there somewhere, but I'm confident he has a method to his madness.

Agree with all of this. For majority of the time, he's simply just playing hard. I don't even know how much he talks anymore, he's just annoying with his play. And it's frustrating because he looks slow but savy enough to score on you. I don't think he's ever dirty or does things like a Delladova does for the Cavs. Biggest improvement I've seen from JP, aside from defense at the top of the zone, is his rebounding. Seems like every missed X shot, he has a hand in there tipping it around. Doesn't always make a difference but that presence on every shot goes a long way

Yup. It's the classic "provoke the opponent when the ref isn't looking. " And then, by the time the guy responds, the refs is looking again and calls a foul...which pisses off the opponent even more.

JP is one of my favorite players. He almost made a ridiculous left-handed reverse layup last night that would've been Pete Maravich-esque had it dropped, but it somehow bounced out.

Someone mentioned it earlier, but that falling out of bounds save under the bucket right to James was beautiful, but Farr missed the layup.

Once JP starts shooting like he's capable, he will be a tough matchup.

And I don't care about his talking on the court, nudging a guy here or there, etc. Doesn't bother me at all.

This. Absolutely. He can get under their skin when nobody is watching, sometimes the ref catches an eye, then when the attention is on JP, he draws it out, forgets about it, focuses on what he needs to do and what is the best for the team......then plays more basketball as hard as he can. I absolutely love him. Jalen, on the other hand, can't let things go and negatively impacts his team. JP should teach him the way.

I'm sure there are some heated moments -- Chris preaches competition in practice and is all about game speed and intensity. Flare ups are bound to happen. But I think internal "fights" are far more common in football, where you essentially have 2 teams that go at it throughout training camp and practice and generally don't play "together" at all.
