I meant to ask this earlier but forgot about it until I was just watching the DePaul game... anyone have any insight as to why the crowd was booing Billy Garrett the other night? It seemed to start from the beginning of the game.

Wondering about that myself. Very noticeable on the broadcast.

Did he flip off the student section before the game or something?

Billy Garrett has some form of sickle cell. Because of that he frequently needs to come out of games to rest. That fact that he's able to play at all speaks well of him and should make anyone embarrassed about booing him.

This is ridiculous! Everyone on opposing teams are fair game.

if i remember correctly, in the past few games against DePaul, Garrett has gotten a couple Ts against us, he also complains a ton if he doesnt get calls. And theres nothing wrong with booing another teams best player.

Here's my insight as a Xavier grad who grew up in Chicago during the Ray/Joey Meyer era. DePaul is still my #2 team after X.

1. Billy Garrett is not their best player - Myke Henry is.
2. DePaul lost out on both Bobby Hurley and Bryce Drew during the coaching search because DePaul's AD required any new coach to keep Garrett's dad on as an assistant. Most fans (the few that are left). Did not feel the short term risk of losing Garrett was worth the long term implications of hiring another bad coach.
3. There has been some recent friction onthe DePaul bench between the Garretts and Leitao.
4. In recent games DePaul has looked better when Garrett is out because the offense run better when the PG is not looking for his shot and getting other s involved.
5. He's a defensive liabilty because he is not quick enough to guard other point guards.

Your name would seem to indicate some credibility in this matter...thanks.

Actually I know an AAU coach who has a lot of insight into the program.

In other words, Billy Garrett Jr. may be headed down the Melvin Cleveland path for the Blue Demons.

AAU and DePaul basketball. That seems depressing.

I must have missed something as I was at the game and don't recall the booing at all. I must have had too many Truths

Seriously? Has the world really gotten to the place where you can't boo opposing teams' players without first checking to see what said players' backstories are for fear of hurting someone's feelings or offending someone? Sickle cell sucks and I'm sorry he suffers from it, but seriously?

I can only imagine the announcements before a game if we had subscribed to this process for awhile now:

Xavier fans please do not boo Mick Cronin as he is very tiny and loud noises harm his delicate gnome ears. Also, please keep in mind that the use of big words or long sentences confuse and upset the UC players for reasons obvious to us all. They're fighting through this and your booing them speaks more of you than them. Enjoy the event about to take place, and remember to keep all cheering and fun to a minimum lest you face a reflection session.

I guess you can't handle the Truth. The Truth and Psychopathy are now my two favorite beers. Seems like XU could sell them for less and make more dough. I know the glass is a little bigger but not that much. Having some RedBreast now. Between that and the Black Bush, I am happy.

While I'm too young for the Meyer era, I have family who graduated from DePaul during that period, and still hold season tickets.

I get to a few DePaul games every season, and attend the pregame reception where Jean Lenti Ponsetto (AD) oftentimes speaks. In my opinion, she is the root of their problems. X is light years ahead in how they treat their program, from game day experience, to competent coach hiring, and overall value the basketball team brings to the University.

Philosophically, DePaul puts a much greater emphasis on the non-revenue driving sports. It's noble in one sense, but incredibly foolish in the other. Exploit the gem you have. It showing with fan support right now.

She sold her soul to keep Billy Garrett - his father is stuck on the bench, and outside of his son's talents, he doesn't bring any discernible coaching talent or recruiting power. Imagine if X didn't have Pegues, or Murray. It's showing right now.

Prior to the Leitao retread, and Garrett move, she brought in Jerry Wainwright. Great human being. Assistant coach, at best.

I could go on and on. But at least my family has been smart enough to put Xavier ahead of DePaul.
